Book excerpt: A classic children’s book for every Canadian family to treasure for all time – a story of mystery and young love in a richly detailed Canadian historical setting. From the winner of the Governor General’s Award for Children’s Literature comes one of Canada’s best-loved, bestselling books for young readers. In the award-winning follow-up to the beloved children’s classic, The Root Cellar, Janet Lunn brings us an enthralling historical tale of Celtic magic, kindred spirits and the struggles of pioneer life in Upper Canada. Shadow in Hawthorn Bay introduces fifteen-year-old Mary Urquhart, a Scottish girl with a special gift – the gift of “second sight”. One morning, in the spring of 1815, Mary hears her beloved cousin Duncan calling desperately for her help. But Duncan is 3,000 miles away in Upper Canada, and to journey to him means leaving the safety and comfort of home for an unknown wilderness. Answering the call, Mary finds herself battling dark forces in a foreign land. But as she struggles for her survival and independence, she unexpectedly finds friendship – with cheerful Yankee Patty, with Owena, the quiet Indian who recognizes the healing powers in her, and with Luke – so different from “Duncan the black.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in Home Words explore the complexity of the idea of home through various theoretical lenses and groupings of texts. One focus of this collection is the relation between the discourses of nation, which often represent the nation as home, and the discourses of home in children’s literature, which variously picture home as a dwelling, family, town or region, psychological comfort, and a place to start from and return to. These essays consider the myriad ways in which discourses of home underwrite both children’s and national literatures. Home Words reconfigures the field of Canadian children’s literature as it is usually represented by setting the study of English- and French-language texts side by side, and by paying sustained attention to the diversity of work by Canadian writers for children, including both Aboriginal peoples and racialized Canadians. It builds on the literary histories, bibliographical essays, and biographical criticism that have dominated the scholarship to date and sets out to determine and establish new directions for the study of Canadian children’s literature.

  • Author : Joseph Conrad
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press, USA

  • ISBN : 9780192801708
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book The Shadow line written by Joseph Conrad and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2003 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in 1915, The Shadow-Line is based upon events and experiences from twenty-seven years earlier to which Conrad returned obsessively in his fiction. A young sea captain's first command brings with it a succession of crises: his sea is becalmed, the crew laid low by fever, and his deranged first mate is convinced that the ship is haunted by the malignant spirit of a previous captain. This is indeed a work full of "sudden passions", in which Conrad is able to show how the full intensity of existence can be experienced by the man who, in the words of the older Captain Giles, is prepared to "stand up to his bad luck, to his mistakes, to his conscience." A subtle and penetrating analysis of the nature of manhood, The Shadow-Line investigates varieties of masculinity and desire in a subtext that counters the tale's seemingly conventional surface.

Book Windows and Words

Download or read book Windows and Words written by Susan-Ann Cooper and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Windows and Words is a collection of seventeen essays that confirms and celebrates the artistry of Canadian Children's Literature. There are essays that survey a wealth of English language fiction, from the internationally acclaimed work of Lucy Maud Montgomery, the aboriginal adolescent novel, to the increasingly multi-cultural character of children's books. Others examine book illustration, visual literacy, and the creative partnership seen in the picture book and its art design. With contributions by two Governor General's Award winning authors, Janet Lunn and Tim Wynne-Jones, and a final commentary by Elizabeth Waterson, the heart of this collection offers a unique perspective on the artistry of writing for children and claims a rightful place for Canadian children's literature as literature.
