Book excerpt: One in five people in the United States had a sexually transmitted infection (STI) on any given day in 2018, totaling nearly 68 million estimated infections. STIs are often asymptomatic (especially in women) and are therefore often undiagnosed and unreported. Untreated STIs can have severe health consequences, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility, miscarriage or newborn death, and increased risk of HIV infection, genital and oral cancers, neurological and rheumatological effects. In light of this, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, through the National Association of County and City Health Officials, commissioned the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine to convene a committee to examine the prevention and control of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provide recommendations for action. In 1997, the Institute of Medicine released a report, The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Although significant scientific advances have been made since that time, many of the problems and barriers described in that report persist today; STIs remain an underfunded and comparatively neglected field of public health practice and research. The committee reviewed the current state of STIs in the United States, and the resulting report, Sexually Transmitted Infections: Advancing a Sexual Health Paradigm, provides advice on future public health programs, policy, and research.

Book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students

Download or read book Understanding HIV and STI Prevention for College Students written by Leo Wilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young people aged 18 to 25 are at a significant risk for acquiring and transmitting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections). Primary developmental processes that place college students particularly at risk include the experience of intimacy, sexual desires and the centrality of the peer group. During these routine developmental processes, college students experiment with unprotected sex, multiple sex partners and alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which are contributing risk factors for HIV/STI infections. Early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of HIV and other STIs is germane to promoting the sexual health of college students and reducing high HIV/STI infection rates among young people. This edited volume will provide innovative and cutting-edge approaches to prevention for college students and will have a major impact on advancing the interdisciplinary fields of higher education and public health. It will explore core ideas such as hooking up culture, sexual violence, LGBT and students of color, as well as HIV and STI prevention in community colleges, rural colleges and minority serving institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has the dubious distinction of leading the industrialized world in overall rates of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), with 12 million new cases annually. About 3 million teenagers contract an STD each year, and many will have long-term health problems as a result. Women and adolescents are particularly vulnerable to these diseases and their health consequences. In addition, STDs increase the risk of HIV transmission. The Hidden Epidemic examines the scope of sexually transmitted infections in the United States and provides a critical assessment of the nation's response to this public health crisis. The book identifies the components of an effective national STD prevention and control strategy and provides direction for an appropriate response to the epidemic. Recommendations for improving public awareness and education, reaching women and adolescents, integrating public health programs, training health care professionals, modifying messages from the mass media, and supporting future research are included. The book documents the epidemiological dimensions and the economic and social costs of STDs, describing them as "a secret epidemic" with tremendous consequences. The committee frankly discusses the confusing and often hypocritical nature of how Americans deal with issues regarding sexualityâ€"the conflicting messages conveyed in the mass media, the reluctance to promote condom use, the controversy over sex education for teenagers, and the issue of personal blame. The Hidden Epidemic identifies key elements of effective, culturally appropriate programs to promote healthy behavior by adolescents and adults. It examines the problem of fragmentation in STD services and provides examples of communities that have formed partnerships between stakeholders to develop integrated approaches. The committee's recommendations provide a practical foundation on which to build an integrated national program to help young people and adults develop habits of healthy sexuality. The Hidden Epidemic was written for both health care professionals and people without a medical background and will be indispensable to anyone concerned about preventing and controlling STDs.

However, as people's sexual attitude has changed, a lack in sexual health education may lead to increasing rate of sexually transmitted diseases. In general, college is the last stage of students before they enter society. Hence, college is an ideal place for students to receive health education and acquire the knowledge of STD prevention and transmission. Objective: This systematic review aimed to examine whether health education interventions can increase STDs knowledge of college students in Mainland China, by evaluating the implemented interventions in the studies. Methods: Articles published from 2000 to 2015 were systematically searched through EMBASE, PubMed and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Inclusion and exclusion criteria were predefined for article selection. Intervention studies were included and assessed by TREND and CONSORT. Results: Sixteen articles were included after being examined carefully. Eleven studies of the 16 articles were pre-post studies, three were non-randomized trial studies, and there were two randomized control trials. All study outcomes were measured by self-administrated questionnaires which involved awareness rate of STDs knowledge, prevention and transmission as well as knowledge of reproduction and contraception. Results of pre-post studies showed that knowledge rate of the students increased. In addition, the differences appeared to be significant between intervention groups and control groups. Conclusion: This systematic review showed that the knowledge rate became higher after the intervention. But the intervention methods were restricted to lecturing and health education materials. The strength of the evidence of effectiveness was not strong. Therefore, diversified health education channels should be developed and evaluated to facilitate more effective interventions concerning STD prevention. Book Improving Sexually Transmitted Infection Knowledge in Community College Students

Download or read book Improving Sexually Transmitted Infection Knowledge in Community College Students written by Rebecca F. Halford and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This DNP project was conducted to identify gaps in knowledge focusing on sexually transmitted infections within Texas and Region one. The research study gathered data from first-year nursing students who have chosen to participate in a sexually transmitted infection-focused educational module. Participants were first-year nursing students and understood the research study was strictly voluntary with no forms of compensation. Currently, the curriculum in the nursing program at which the study took place does not focus on sexually transmitted infections and is directed to speak minimally on the subject. This is a contributing factor to why the rise in sexually transmitted infections and lack of knowledge in the region is so prevalent. This crosssectional descriptive correlational study sought to build upon and enhance the student nurse's current knowledge, skills, and self-efficacy in sexually transmitted infections in hopes of decreasing the rise and educating others on sexual health. A total of 45 students in their first semester of an Associate Degree Nursing Program in rural Texas consented to participate in this study. Each participant was educated on the study being conducted in an online format using a proxy and the researcher. An electronic survey was completed by the participants before and after viewing the interactive evidence-based educational module that focused on sexually transmitted infections. The pre-intervention scores were statistically significantly different from postintervention scores (p

This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) present a significant health challenge for communities, states, and the nation. In addition, STIs are a potential threat to an individual's immediate and long-term health and well-being. Studies suggest implementing STI prevention programs to improve knowledge and reduce risky behaviors in college students' results in increased knowledge and preventative behavior. Effective interventions are indicated to address the concern of increasing STIs in young people. One University campus located in southwest Georgia participated in an evidence-base practice (EBP) change project to increase knowledge of STI prevention in college students. Participants for inclusion in this EBP change were adult college students, male and female, 18 years of age or older attending the University. There were 153 individuals who elected to participate in the EBP change project. All participants completed Demographic Sheets, viewed the Safe in the City STI prevention video, and completed pre and post Sexually Transmitted Knowledge Questionnaires (STD-KQ). The measurable outcome for this EBP change project was to increase participants' knowledge of STI prevention. Implementation of the video educational intervention was effective in achieving the desired outcome. A simple paired t-test revealed a significant increase in knowledge from the pre STD-KQ to the post STD-KQ (p

Book University Students Perceived Benefits Barriers and Cues Toward Testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Download or read book University Students Perceived Benefits Barriers and Cues Toward Testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major health problem among collegeaged individuals in the United States. Each year, greater than nine million new cases of STDs occur among 15 to 24 year olds. While testing for STDs can decrease the spread of STD transmission, rates of STD testing remain consistently low. The purpose of this study was to examine universitystudents' rates of STD testing and perceived barriers, benefits, and cues toward STD testing. Potential differences in STD testing, perceived benefits, barriers and cues based on gender, education level, and involvement in sexual intercourse were also examined. A four page survey was completed by 319 students at a Midwestern university in the fall of 2006. Results indicated that most sexually active students had never been tested for STDs. STD testing rates differed significantly based on grade level and number of sexual intercourse partners. Juniors and seniors were significantly more likely than freshmen and sophomores to have ever been tested for STDs. Those who had ever been tested had significantly more sexual intercourse partners than those who had never been tested. Gender and frequency of condom use had no significant effect on rates of testing. Number of perceived benefits of testing and perceived barriers to testing did not differ significantly based on gender, grade level, number of sexual intercourse partners, frequency of condom use or testing rates. Females reported a significantly higher number of cues to testing than did males. Such findings should be shared with college-aged individuals and used by health educators to develop more effective interventions aimed at STD prevention.
