Cookery: Food Rhetorics and Social Production explores how food mediates both rhetorical influence and material life through the overlapping concepts of invention and production. The classical canon of rhetorical invention entails the process of discovering one’s persuasive appeals, whereas the contemporary landscape of agricultural production touches virtually everyone on the planet. Together, rhetoric and food shape the boundaries of shared living. The essays in this volume probe the many ways that food informs contemporary social life through its mediation of bodies—human and extra-human alike—in the forms of intoxication, addiction, estrangement, identification, repulsion, and eroticism. Our bodies, in turn, shape the boundaries of food through research, technology, cultural trends, and, of course, by talking about it. Each chapter explores food’s persuasive nature through a unique prism that includes intoxication, dirt, “food porn,” strange foods, and political “invisibility.” Each case offers new insights about the relations between rhetorical influence and embodied practice through food. As a whole Cookery articulates new ways of viewing food’s powers of persuasion, as well as the inherent role of persuasion in agricultural production. The purpose of Cookery, then, is to demonstrate the deep rhetoricity of our modern industrial food system through critical examinations of concepts, practices, and tendencies endemic to this system. Food has become an essential topic for discussions concerned with the larger social dynamics of production, distribution, access, reception, consumption, influence, and the fraught question of choice. Vitanza (author of Sexual Violence in Western Thought and Writing) continues to rethink the problem of sexual violence in cinema and how rape is often represented in "chaste" ways, in the form of a Chaste Cinematics. Vitanza continues to discuss Chaste Cinematics as participating in transdisciplinary-rhetorical traditions that establish the very foundations (groundings, points of stasis) for nation states and cultures. In this offering, however, the initial grounding for the discussions is "base materialism" (George Bataille): divine filth, the sacred and profane. It is this post-philosophical base materialism that destabilizes binaries, fixedness, and brings forth excluded thirds. Vitanza asks: why is it that a repressed third, or a third figure, returns, most strangely as a "product" of rape and torture? He works with Jean-Paul Sartre and Page duBois's suggestion that the "product" is a new "species." Always attempting unorthodox ways of approaching social problems, Vitanza organizes his table of contents as a DVD menu of "Extras" (supplements). This menu includes Alternate Endings and Easter Eggs as well as an Excursus, which invokes readers to take up the political exigency of the DVD-Book. Vitanza's first "Extra" studies a trio of films that need to be reconsidered, given what they offer as insights into Chaste Cinematics: Amadeus (a mad god), Henry Fool (a foolish god), and Multiple Maniacs (a divine god who is raped and eats excrement). The second examines Helke Sander's documentary Liberators Take Liberties, which re-thinks the rapes of German women by the Russians and Allies during the Battle of Berlin. The third rethinks Margie Strosser's video-film Rape Stories that calls for revenge. In the Alternate Endings, Vitanza rethinks the problem of reversibility in G. Noé's Irréversible. In the Easter Eggs, he considers Dominique Laporte's "the Irreparable," as the object of loss and Giorgio Agamben's "the Irreparable," as hope in what is without remedy. The result is not another film-studies book, but a new genre, a new set of rhetorics, for new ways of thinking about cinematics, perhaps postcinematics. Victor J. Vitanza is Professor of English and Rhetorics and is the founding Director of the Ph.D. program in Rhetorics, Communication, and Information Design in the College of Architecture, Art, and Humanities, at Clemson University. He is also Professor of Rhetoric and Philosophy, as well as the holder of the Jean-François Lyotard Chair in the Media and Communication Division at the European Graduate School in Switzerland. He is the Editor of PRE/TEXT: A Journal of Rhetorical Theory. As humans, we tend to deny things that bring us discomfort. Especially talking about rape during conflict and war. People tend to struggle in finding ways to share the indescribable. Because the images and ideas associated with rape are so intense and disturbing, opportunities to create change and awareness through dialogue are a challenge at best. This cloak of silence, however, is what keeps rape and sexual violence alive and ominous. My ongoing work in the field as a therapist has brought me the opportunity to listen to war rape survivors' experiences. I have thus far heard over 200 accounts, which is a number steadily increasing. These brave women and girls allowed themselves to share with me something terrifying and previously unspeakable. Many have held on to their pain in silence, alone. They shared their humble beginnings, their ideals; and their stark realities during and following their rape, as well their aftermaths, and their healing. So many survivors have made the conscious choice of speaking out and being visible, even if they come from cultures that may be less than supportive to women who are the victims of sexual violence. Before I began work within the field of rape and sexual violence awareness, I was like many other people living in my own comfort bubble. Back then, I was insulated by my values. I pursued my ideas without a deeper understanding of the complexity of war rape survivors' physical, emotional and social experiences, as well as the complex trauma that they were struggling with. Working with war-rape survivors quickly popped my comfort bubble. I realized my own tendency to deny sources of discomfort. I started to confront myself with the overwhelming reality that war-rape survivors face every single day. Listening to survivors' experiences and working with them as they address their trauma confronted me with the realities that rape survivors face, that their healing process starts from within, mentally and physically, but must continue outward, repairing their bonds and trust within their families, communities, and cultural institutions as well.

It explores the function and effect of wartime sexual violence and examines the conditions that make women and girls most vulnerable to these acts both before, during and after conflict.
