Book excerpt: Sextus Iulius Frontinus is best known as author of the military handbook Strategems but, in addition to writing this and other works (now lost), he also had a varied and surprisingly influential career in military and civil posts around the Roman Empire. Frontinus loyally served at least six emperors, often acting as a trusted counselor, and even deputized for Trajan while he was busy in Germany and elsewhere. He was possibly the longest-serving governor of Britain (five years), where he completed the subjugation of Wales and established the frontier in northern England at the Ribble-Tees line. He founded several legionary fortresses, including those that later became the towns of York, Chester and Caerleon. He also served on the Rhine, in Spain and Asia and in the civil sphere reformed the water supply of Rome. John Grainger has written the first full biography of Frontinus. Reconstructing his life to the fullest extent permitted by the sources, he favorably re-evaluates his importance, particularly in Britain (at the expense of the better-known Agricola. Froninus' career, the author concludes, is one of the most varied and significant of any that can be reconsructed for any Roman who did not become Emperor.

Book Frontinus and the Curae of the Curator Aquarum

Download or read book Frontinus and the Curae of the Curator Aquarum written by Michael Peachin and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The De aquis of Sextus Julius Frontinus is usually interpreted as either an administrative guide for the curator aquarum, or as a work of praise. It can be demonstrated, however, that Frontinus had another goal in writing. The book is more likely what we would call a political pamphlet, explaining a particular administrative reform, and encouraging those affected by that reform to cooperate with it. Frontinus wants to be sure that all concessions of aqueduct water to private individuals be made as proper grants by the emperor. In short, this curator aquarum is interested in regulating the flow of a particular beneficium, namely, aqueduct water, from the emperor to his elite subjects.

Book excerpt: Ancient expertise on water and warfare. Frontinus, Sextus Iulius, ca. AD 35-103, was a capable Roman civil officer and military commander. Praetor of the city in 70 and consul in 73 or 74, 98 and 100, he was, about the year 76, sent to Britain as governor. He quelled the Silures of Wales, and began to build a road through their territory; his place was taken by Agricola in 78. In 97 he was given the highly esteemed office of Manager of Aqueducts at Rome. He is known to have been an augur, being succeeded by his friend Pliny the Younger. The two sides of Frontinus' public career are reflected in his two surviving works. Stratagems, written after 84, gives examples of military stratagems from Greek and Roman history, for the instruction of Roman officers, in three books; the fourth book is concerned largely with military discipline. The Aqueducts of Rome, written in 97-98, gives some historical details and a description of the aqueducts for the water supply of the city, with laws relating to them. Frontinus aimed at being useful and writes in a rather popular style which is both simple and clear.

Book excerpt: Strategemata, also known as Stratagems, is a work by the Roman author Frontinus who lived at the beginning of our era. Strategemata is a collection of examples of military stratagems from Greek and Roman history. This work was created as a manual for the use of generals. It is split in four chapters dealing with the preparation of battle, fighting a pitched battle, siege and general statements of war. He gives tips and tricks which allowed generals of the past win the battles. That includes poisoning water, capturing a flag as a discouragement, or rejecting a group of soldiers back to camp unless they bring a victory. Despite, some of the tactics showcase the cruelty, in general, the principles of the ancient battles possess timeless value and can be of great use for everyone interested in the military tactics.
