Download or read book Gender Sex and Children s Play written by Jacky Kilvington and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-08-11 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does gender, sex and sexuality influence children's play, and their learning? Can/should professionals try to influence children's gender and sexual concepts? Can/should professionals try to prevent gender stereotyping? These and other questions are explored in a lively and thought-provoking text that looks at why and how children inhabit or develop their gender and sexuality. Written in an approachable way and illustrated with case studies and linked to current research and theory, the book helps students, teachers and playworkers understand the debates about biology versus culture and social learning and how these impact on children's expression of gender and sexuality. Engaging the reader in a thorough reflection of their own views and approaches to the genderized and sexualized behaviour of children at play, this text is an invaluable guide for all those interested in the importance of play, gender and sexuality and how they relate to children's lives. Topics include: play and the behaviour of boys and girls within particular social contexts; play and girls' and boys' sexual behaviour and their associated feelings; play and children's self-concepts and expectations; the professional adult workers' role and the manifestation of genderized and/or sexualized play behaviour both in and outside a setting.

Book Sex Roles of Children in Contemporary Indian Society

Download or read book Sex Roles of Children in Contemporary Indian Society written by Sushila Srivastava and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1990 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India has witnessed profound changes in almost every aspect of life. The process of industrialization, urbanisation and secularization have brought about socio-psychological changes in the attitudes and values of people of this country, especially among the urban population. One of the changes is breaking down of traditional sex-role differentiations resulting in an increased flexibility in the roles and activities considered permissible for each sex, especially for girls and women. Yet being still typically a traditional society, the effect of these secular changes is unknown or remains a guess. In this book, the author attempts to answer the question as to how far these changes have affected the sex-role behaviour of the Indian children. The exhaustive review of empirical studies on sex-roles is useful for those who wish to have a consolidated account of researches on sex-roles carried out till now. This book will be useful for parents, teachers, educators and students of Home Science, Psychology, Sociology and Anthropology.

Book excerpt: Gender Development is the first book to examine gender from a truly developmental perspective and fills a real need for a textbook and source book for college and graduate students, parents, teachers, researchers, and counsellors. It examines the processes involved in the development of gender, addressing such sensitive and complex questions as what causes males and females to be different and why they behave in different ways. The authors provide an up-to-date, integrative review of theory and research, tracing gender development from the moment of conception through adulthood and emphasising the complex interaction of biology, socialisation, and cognition. The topics covered include hormonal influences, moral development, play and friendships, experiences at school and work, and psychopathology.

Book An Open Book What and How Young Children Learn From Picture and Story Books

Download or read book An Open Book What and How Young Children Learn From Picture and Story Books written by Jessica S. Horst and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at and listening to picture and story books is a ubiquitous activity, frequently enjoyed by many young children and their parents. Well before children can read for themselves they are able to learn from books. Looking at and listening to books increases children’s general knowledge, understanding about the world and promotes language acquisition. This collection of papers demonstrates the breadth of information pre-reading children learn from books and increases our understanding of the social and cognitive mechanisms that support this learning. Our hope is that this Research Topic/eBook will be useful for researchers as well as educational practitioners and parents who are interested in optimizing children’s learning.

Book Sex Role and Self concept in Young Children

Download or read book Sex Role and Self concept in Young Children written by Judith Lee Briscoe-Kleven and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past, a major emphasis of child development research and theory building has been the study of acquisition of sex role learning. Today, an additional dimension is seen in the study of the effect of sex role stereotypy on self-concept. As a result of the research in this area, the thesis was developed that adherence to one's selection of sex roles--whether correct by society's standards or not--produces self-consistency, which in turn produces a higher self-concept. The purpose of this research was to ascertain whether there is a difference in sex role preference (i.e. adherence to sex role stereotypy) of children at selected ages, between sexes, and among socioeconomic strata. Another purpose is to examine the influence of self-consistency (i.e. sex role confirmation defined as adherence to self-identified sex roles) in determining the effect of sex role stereotypy on self-concept as a learner. Individual examinations using The Sex Role Learning Index to estimate sex role preference and sex role confirmation, and using The Self-Concept and Motivation Inventory to estimate self-concept were given to a sample of 36, four and five year old children. This sample of 36 children were selected at random from a stratified and classified population of seven group care facilities. To be included in the sample, the children fell into the average or bright range of intelligence as identified by The Slosson Intelligence Test. After administering both inventories in carefully controlled settings, the scores were subjected to two, three-way analyses of variance, two one-way analyses of variance, and two Pearson Product Moment Correlations with significance being set at the .05 level. Hypotheses. Ten null hypotheses were tested in the study: (1) there is no significant age effect; (2) there is no significant sex effect; (3) there is no significant socioeconomic effect; (4) there is no significant interaction between age and sex; (5) there is no significant interaction between age and socioeconomic status; (6) there is no significant interaction between sex and socioeconomic status; (7) there is no significant interaction between age, sex, and socioeconomic status; (8) there is no significant self-concept effect; (9) there is no significant relationship between self-concept and sex role preference; and (10) there is no significant relationship between self-concept and sex role confirmation. Results and Conclusions. All hypotheses were retained except Hypothesis Two, in which a significant difference did occur between male and female children, with the males adhering more to sex role stereotypy than the girls. In addition, further exploration, based on multiple linear regression analysis, produced a pattern which showed children that scored higher on sex role preference than sex role confirmation also scored higher in self-concept. One conclusion of the study was similar to those in the review of literature (i.e. boys adhere more to sex role stereotypy in everyday activities than girls). An additional conclusion was that self-consistency did not play a part in determining sex role learning's effect on self-concept at four and five years of age. Although the hypothesis regarding socioeconomic status was retained, the children in the study from the middle socioeconomic class tended to have more stereotypic responses than the low socioeconomic status children. Age and sex also tended to have a combined effect on sex role preference. The classic developmental stages of Erickson, Piaget, and Kohlberg appeared to provide a rational framework for understanding the effect of sex role learning on selfconcept in four and five year old children.
