Book Boys Or Girls

Download or read book Boys Or Girls written by Nancy E. Williamson and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Bulletin examines recent evidence from the U.S. and selected countries on what types of preferences parents have about the sexes of their children and how strongly they are held; the significance of these preferences; what social and economic conditions seem to foster different types of preferences; and how individuals and societies deal with them. It is clear that the age-old preference for boys remains nearly universal. This runs against the ideal of "every child, a wanted child."

Book Sex Selection of Children

Download or read book Sex Selection of Children written by Neil G. Bennett and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sex Selection of Children explores the strategies used to control the sex of children, the conditions under which a couple would employ a given technique, and the technology to achieve their desired family composition. It also considers the social consequences of sex-selection techniques, the legal factors that might impinge on the use of such a technology, and the ethical considerations associated with its use. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with an overview of some of the more humorous past approaches to sex selection. It then discusses the effects of sex selection on fertility, sex selection by means of amniocentesis and selective abortion, and the theorized link between the timing of fertilization and the sex ratio of offspring. A chapter considers a decision-making model that describes the use of sex-selection techniques by couples who wish to have a specific number of children over their entire childbearing period, while another chapter analyzes the economics of sex preference and selection. The remaining chapters address the parental preferences about the sexes of their offspring in different societies, the legal aspects of prenatal sex selection, a moral policy for sex choice, and the ethics and public policy on sex choice. This book is a valuable resource for specialists involved in fields ranging from sociology and economics to biology, public health, law, and ethics.

Book Immigrant Parents Preferences for Children s Sex

Download or read book Immigrant Parents Preferences for Children s Sex written by Mats Lillehagen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parental sex preferences for children have been documented in many native populations, but much less evidence is available on immigrants' preferences for the sex of their children. Using high quality longitudinal register data from Norway, a country with a recent immigration history, we estimate hazard regression models of third birth rates by the sex composition of previous children born. Results show that there is an overall preference for at least one child of each sex also among immigrants, and that certain regions have strong preferences for boys. Sensitivity tests indicate that the age at arrival does not affect the conclusions. In sum, the findings support theories emphasizing cultural persistence, rather than theories of rapid integration and adaption of immigrants.

Book Comparison of Preschool aged Children s Sex role Preferences Related to Cultural and Parental Stereotypes

Download or read book Comparison of Preschool aged Children s Sex role Preferences Related to Cultural and Parental Stereotypes written by Marilyn Kidder and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to explore preschool aged children's sex-role preferences as they relate to both cultural and parental stereotypes of sex roles. Forty-seven children of preschool age and their parents acted as subjects for this study. All children were enrolled in preschool programs established by the Family Life Department at Oregon State University. These children ranged in age from 3 years-3 months to 5 years-3 months. The IT Scale for Children (ITSC) was used to measure children's sex-role preferences, and parental stereotypes of sex roles were obtained by asking parents to judge each item found in the ITSC according to their own personal standards of masculinity and femininity. Cultural stereotypes of sex roles were determined by using Brown's exclusively masculine and exclusively feminine descriptions of items in the ITSC. The binomial method, paired difference t-test and descriptive statistics were used when appropriate, to test the hypotheses generated in this study. Findings revealed significant disagreements between parents' and Brown's cultural stereotypes of sex roles on a majority (86.1 %) of the items found in the ITSC (p

Book excerpt: The preference for male children transcends many societies and cultures, making it an issue of local and global dimensions. While son preference is not a new phenomenon and has existed historically in many parts of Asia, its contemporary expressions illustrate the gendered outcomes of social power relations as they interact and intersect with culture, economy and technologies. Son Preference brings together key debates on the subject of son preference by assessing existing work in the field and providing new insights through primary research. The book covers a broad range of social science discussions and draws upon textual and ethnographic material from India. Son Preference will be useful to students, scholars, activists and anyone interested in the issues surrounding gender inequity, sex selection and skewed sex ratios.
