Book Protocols in Human Molecular Genetics

Download or read book Protocols in Human Molecular Genetics written by Christopher G. Mathew and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-02-03 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraordinary advances have been made in the field of human molecular genetics during the past five years. The ability to amplify a specific region ofDNA a millionfold in a few hours using the polymerase chain reaction has led to the rapid identification of mutations in human disease and of DNA sequence polymorphisms on every human chro- some. DNA fragments of up to 1 megabase in length can now be resolved by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to create long-range physical maps of important regions of the genome, and can be cloned in the form of yeast artificial chromosomes. The discovery of highly variable "minisatellite" DNA sequences has led to the development of DNA fingerprinting. The application of these techniques to the study of the human genome has culminated in major advances such as the cloning of the cystic fibrosis gene, the construction of genetic linkage maps of each human chro- some, the mapping of many genes responsible for human inherited d- orders, genetic fingerprinting of forensic specimens, and the detection of mutations involved in the development of human tumors. Although many of the new techniques in molecular genetics can be learned relatively easily, it is often difficult for a researcher to obtain all of the relevant information necessary for getting up a technique and applying it successfully. The information available in the research lite- ture often lacks the depth of description that the new user requires.

Book The Evolution of Sex Determination

Download or read book The Evolution of Sex Determination written by Leo W. Beukeboom and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual reproduction is a fundamental aspect of life. It is defined by the occurrence of meiosis and the fusion of two gametes of different sexes or mating types. Sex-determination mechanisms are responsible for the sexual fate and development of sexual characteristics in an organism, be it a unicellular alga, a plant, or an animal. In many cases, sex determination is genetic: males and females have different alleles or different genes that specify their sexual morphology. In animals, this is often accompanied by chromosomal differences. In other cases, sex may be determined by environmental (e.g. temperature) or social variables (e.g. the size of an organism relative to other members of its population). Surprisingly, sex-determination mechanisms are not evolutionarily conserved but are bewilderingly diverse and appear to have had rapid turnover rates during evolution. Evolutionary biologists continue to seek a solution to this conundrum. What drives the surprising dynamics of such a fundamental process that always leads to the same outcome: two sex types, male and female? The answer is complex but the ongoing genomic revolution has already greatly increased our knowledge of sex-determination systems and sex chromosomes in recent years. This novel book presents and synthesizes our current understanding, and clearly shows that sex-determination evolution will remain a dynamic field of future research. The Evolution of Sex Determination is an advanced, research level text suitable for graduate students and researchers in genetics, developmental biology, and evolution.

  • Pages : 607 pages

Download or read book Advances in Genetics written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1999-05-04 with total page 607 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Genetics increases its focus on modern human genetics and its relation to medicine with the merger of this long-standing serial with Molecular Genetic Medicine. This merger affirms the Academic Press commitment to publish important reviews of the broadest interest to geneticists and their colleagues in affiliated disciplines. Volume 39 of Advances in Genetics completes the trilogy of volumes authored by Dr. Igor Zhimulev of the Institute of Cytology and Genetics in Novosibirsk, Russia. This set comprises what is perhaps the most comprehensive collection of volumes dedicated to the study of polytene chromosomes. Volume 39 picks up where the previous two volumes, 34 and 37, left off. It covers the organization of genetic material in the morphological structures of the interphase chromosome, the chromomeres and the interchromomeric regions, and the structural changes occurring during the activation of the chomomeres, the puffs.

Book Drosophila Cells in Culture

Download or read book Drosophila Cells in Culture written by Guy Echalier and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1997-02-24 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Currently Drosophila is a dominant experimental model in developmental biology and in gene regulation in eukaryotes. This volume summarizes some thirty years of experience in the handling of in vitro cultured Drosophila cells. Its main emphasis is on gene transfer methodology, cell responses to heat shock, hormonal regulation of genes, and on the expression and mobility of transposable elements. - Some thirty years of experience in handling in vitro cultured Drosophila cells - Cell cultures which provide material for a multiplicity of biochemical approaches - DNA-mediated gene transfer as an irreplaceable tool for analyzing basic mechanisms of regulation - Drosophila cell lines which qualify them for use in biotechnology

Book Molecular Genetic Medicine

Download or read book Molecular Genetic Medicine written by Theodore Friedmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular Genetic Medicine, Volume II, summarizes progress in several of the most important areas of modern molecular genetics and medicine. The chapters deal with ancient and common genetic diseases, a new infectious disease that threatens to become a world-wide scourge for all of humanity, and two of the most important and still poorly understood causes of mental retardation. The common thread winding through these separate stories is the astounding illumination of all these disorders by modern molecular genetic studies. The book opens with a chapter on the history of the molecular approach to the thalassemias, among the most common and severe of all human genetic diseases. Separate chapters follow covering the history and current state of the fragile X syndrome; the mechanisms of hepatitis B viral gene expression, its relation to liver cancer, and its prevention; and molecular genetics of Down syndrome. Subsequent chapters deal with mammalian X chromosome inactivation; the use of the human hprt locus as a model system for analyzing mutation in human cells in vivo; and the regulatory genes and factors that govern virus replication of HIV-1.
