Book Backwards and in Heels

Download or read book Backwards and in Heels written by Tammy N. Holloway and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study is to examine whether or not the gender of school leaders, namely principals, affects the perception of effective leadership among the leaders, their followers, and evaluators in secondary schools in New York City. Further, the study examined possible causes for the disparity in secondary schools female leadership as it compares to the representation of female principals in elementary schools. Participants in this grounded theory research design included 13 tenured standalone (grade 6-8) middle school principals in New York City, six were males and seven were females. They took part in open-ended interviews that underscored their experiences with gender and their experiences in becoming and functioning in the role of principal. Additional data was collected via a review of publicly available documents on each participant as they relate to teacher and evaluator perspectives of their leadership. The findings revealed that female secondary leaders lack confidence in their personal leadership abilities resulting in them coming into leadership later in their careers than male counterparts. Additional findings found transformational leadership to be the popular leadership style for secondary school leaders, but female secondary education principals lead differently than males in other ways. Finally, the findings disclosed that while employees thought women were considered the less popular choice for supervisor, when assessed against an objective rubric women performed at exceedingly high levels.

Book EBOOK Leadership Gender and Culture in Education

Download or read book EBOOK Leadership Gender and Culture in Education written by John Collard and published by McGraw-Hill Education (UK). This book was released on 2004-10-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This rich explorative book examines the intricacies of gender, sexuality, ethnicity and class and how these complex influences weave their patterns in the daily lives of leaders. It achieves the difficult balance between acknowledging differences as well as unifying elements. The book also raises many questions about the context for leadership and examines the central issues of: leadership for what? What are leaders there to do - and for whom? To ensure that students achieve higher examination scores, or to promote equity and social justice? This book offers many fresh insights into these and other important questions." Professor Kathryn Riley, Institute of Education, University of London This book features chapters by leading international scholars on gender and educational leadership. Drawing on research in schools in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, the United States and Canada, it introduces new discussions about the impact of gender, race, class, institutional setting and recent ideologies on leadership discourses. The book shows how early research has over-emphasized gender stereotypes and tended to simplify and polarize the ways men and women lead.Looking at differences and similarities in how men and women take on and exercise leadership roles, the authors counter essentialist claims based on biological, psychological and sociological theories that stress gender difference. The discussions employ sophisticated understandings of gender relations and leadership discourses in today’s globalized context. The book is for students and scholars studying leadership and for leaders in different educational contexts around the world.

Book Women on the Rise A Single Sex Leadership Development Program and Its Potential Impact on the Gender Gap in Independent School Leadership

Download or read book Women on the Rise A Single Sex Leadership Development Program and Its Potential Impact on the Gender Gap in Independent School Leadership written by Rachel Danjczek Clouser and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This multiple methods study investigated Women Rising, a yearlong women-only leadership development program, exploring the program's impact on past participants' career trajectories and their interest in the headship, as well as investigating the current head of school hiring process to see if gender bias exists. With those goals in mind, the study sought to answer two research questions: In what ways, if any, does a yearlong women's leadership program have an impact on leadership career trajectories of participants? What impact, if any, does participation in a yearlong women's leadership program have on increasing the number of women hired as heads of school? Data were gathered from a survey sent to Women Rising past participants as well as interviews with past participants, search firm representatives, and head of school search committee chairs. Both in the surveys and interviews, Women Rising participants showed an increase in self-efficacy, to the point that they were not only applying for leadership positions, but also comfortable negotiating for changes so that the position best fit them. Women Rising provided a much-needed opportunity for women to come together and share their experiences in what they consider to be a safe space; the relationships they built in the program, specifically stated as relationships with other women in independent schools, was cited as the greatest benefit of Women Rising. The study also showed a slight increase in interest in the head of school position after women participated in Women Rising. Another finding was the vast disparity of identified qualities needed to be a head of school from search firms, search committee chairs, and Women Rising past participants. It is important that all three of these groups understand the position and what it entails. Also, the head of school position and hiring process is still seen as biased, limiting women's abilities to make it into the finalist round. Without structural changes that address these biases, women will continue to face difficulty in achieving a headship position. Recommendations include the creation of a women-only head of school program and a national mentor network that women in NAIS schools can access.

Book Still Failing at Fairness

Download or read book Still Failing at Fairness written by David Sadker and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-04-28 with total page 769 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite decades of effort to create fair classrooms and schools, gender bias is alive and well, and in some ways growing. School practices continue to send boys and girls down different life paths, too often treating them not as different genders but as different species. Teachers and parents often miss the subtle signs of sexism in classrooms. Through firsthand observations and up-to-the-minute research, Still Failing at Fairness brings the gender issue into focus. The authors provide an in-depth account of how girls' and boys' educations are compromised from elementary school through college, and offer practical advice for teachers and parents who want to make a positive difference. The authors examine today's pressing issues -- the lack of enforcement for Title IX, the impact of the backlash against gender equity, the much-hyped "boys' crisis," hardwired brain differences, and the recent growth of singlesex public schools. This book documents how teaching, current testing practices, and subtle cultural attitudes continue to short-circuit both girls and boys of every race, social class, and ethnicity. Hard-hitting and remarkably informative, Still Failing at Fairness is "a fascinating look into America's classrooms" (National Association of School Psychologists).

Book Women and Educational Leadership

Download or read book Women and Educational Leadership written by Margaret Grogan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book presents a new way of looking at leadership that is anchored in research on women leaders in education. The authors examine how successful women in education lead and offer suggestions and ideas for developing and honing these exemplary leadership practices. Women and Educational Leadership shows how the qualities that characterize women's approaches to leadership differ from traditional approaches?whether the traditional leader is a woman or a man. The authors reveal that women leaders are more collaborative by nature and demonstrate a commitment to social justice. They tend to bring an instructional focus to leadership, include spiritual dimensions in their work, and strive for balance between the personal and professional. This important book offers a new model of leadership that shifts away from the traditional heroic notion of leadership to the collective account of leadership that focuses on leadership for a specific purpose—like social justice. The authors include illustrative examples of leaders who have brought diverse groups to work toward common ground. They also show how leadership is a way to facilitate and support the work of organizational members. The ideas and suggestions presented throughout the book can help the next generation fulfill the promise of a new tradition of leadership. Women and Educational Leadership is part of the Jossey-Bass Leadership Library in Education series.

Book Gender Balance and Gender Bias in Education

Download or read book Gender Balance and Gender Bias in Education written by Deirdre Raftery and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a compelling range of international research on the issues of gender balance and gender bias in education. The chapters draw on cutting edge work from the US, Latin America, the UK, Ireland and Africa, presenting readers with new insights into how educators and students often negotiate deeply ingrained prejudices that are expressed in gendered terms. The book reflects research that draws on a range of methodologies, and both historical and contemporary education contexts are examined. Drawing on historical research, the book widens our understanding of gender issues in education, and provides chapters on physical activity for girls in nineteenth century America, and on the ‘patriarchal imperative’ in mission education in Africa in the nineteenth century. Turning to research on contemporary education settings, the book explores the global phenomenon of the feminisation of teaching. It also illustrates how teachers work in classrooms in which boys’ expressions of masculinities explicitly challenge school order, and looks at the performance of both masculinities and femininities in several education contexts. The book also includes absorbing work on the practices and processes that contribute to the gendering of digital technologies, and it demonstrates ways in which parents unwittingly accept the gendered management of internet ‘risk’ for their daughters. This book was published as a special issue of Gender and Education.
