Download or read book The Nose written by Gabrielle Glaser and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-09-18 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year Americans spend billions of dollars on their noses. From over-the-counter sinus remedies to cosmetic surgery, aromatherapy to Chanel no. 5, we are a nation immersed in all things nasal. But how did this one vital organ become an object of beauty, a status symbol, the basis for judging character? What led to the invention of cotton tissues? Why do we follow our noses when seeking a mate -- or choosing a president? The Nose is a fascinating tour of its subject through history and biology, art and culture, sex and sensibility, sickness and health. Gabrielle Glaser breathes life into her research by offering engaging anecdotes and personal interviews with physicians and their patients; members of the FDA and the Fragrance Foundation; a rabbi who contemplates the nose in sacred Jewish texts; and a plastic surgeon who finally puts his own proboscis under the knife. Sure to awaken the senses of anyone who has pondered, probed, concealed, or cosmetically altered their noses, this book proves that there¹s more to the nose than meets the eye.

Download or read book Orwell s Nose written by John Sutherland and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2012 writer John Sutherland permanently lost his sense of smell. At about the same time, he embarked on a rereading of George Orwell and—still coping with his recent disability—noticed something peculiar: Orwell was positively obsessed with smell. In this original, irreverent biography, Sutherland offers a fresh account of Orwell’s life and works, one that sniffs out a unique, scented trail that wends from Burmese Days through Nineteen Eighty-Four and on to The Road to Wigan Pier. Sutherland airs out the odors, fetors, stenches, and reeks trapped in the pages of Orwell’s books. From Winston Smith’s apartment in Nineteen Eighty-Four, which “smelt of boiled cabbage and old rag mats,” to the tantalizing aromas of concubine Ma Hla May’s hair in Burmese Days, with its “mingled scent of sandalwood, garlic, coconut oil, and jasmine,” Sutherland explores the scent narratives that abound in Orwell’s literary world. Along the way, he elucidates questions that have remained unanswered in previous biographies, addressing gaps that have kept the writer elusively from us. In doing so, Sutherland offers an entertaining but enriching look at one of the most important writers of the twentieth century and, moreover, an entirely new and sensuous way to approach literature: nose first.

Download or read book Sex in the Sea written by Marah J. Hardt and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A marine biologist’s “funny and entertaining” look at the mating rituals of undersea creatures (Miami Herald). Forget the Kama Sutra. When it comes to inventive sex acts, just look to the sea. There we find the elaborate mating rituals of armored lobsters; giant right whales engaging in a lively threesome while holding their breath; full moon sex parties of groupers and daily mating blitzes by blue-headed wrasse. Deep-sea squid perform inverted 69s, while hermaphrodite sea slugs link up in giant sex loops. From doubly endowed sharks to the maze-like vaginas of some whales, Sex in the Sea is a journey unlike any other to explore the staggering ways life begets life beneath the waves. Beyond a deliciously voyeuristic excursion, the book also connects the timeless topic of sex with the timely issue of sustainable oceans—revealing how overfishing, climate change, and pollution are disrupting the creative procreation that drives the wild abundance of life in the sea, and how we can promote successful sex in the sea. “Hardt’s writing is often spectacular at describing the rituals and courtships of underwater reproduction.” —The New Republic “Weird [and] excellent.” —GQ “An oceanographic Kinsey Report.” —O, The Oprah Magazine “[Readers] will find much to learn in this well-written and delightful study.” —Library Journal (starred review)

Download or read book What the Nose Knows written by Avery Gilbert and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-03-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything about the sense of smell fascinates us, from its power to evoke memories to its ability to change our moods and influence our behavior. Yet because it is the least understood of the senses, myths abound. For example, contrary to popular belief, the human nose is almost as sensitive as the noses of many animals, including dogs; blind people do not have enhanced powers of smell; and perfumers excel at their jobs not because they have superior noses, but because they have perfected the art of thinking about scents. In this entertaining and enlightening journey through the world of aroma, olfaction expert Avery Gilbert illuminates the latest scientific discoveries and offers keen observations on modern culture: how a museum is preserving the smells of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row; why John Waters revived the "smellie" in Polyester; and what innovations are coming from artists like the Dutch "aroma jockey" known as Odo7. From brain-imaging laboratories to the high-stakes world of scent marketing, What the Nose Knows takes us on a tour of the strange and surprising realm of smell.

Download or read book The Psychology of Sex Vol 1 6 written by Havelock Ellis and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 2545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition contains three studies which seem to me to be necessary prolegomena to that analysis of the sexual instinct which must form the chief part of an investigation into the psychology of sex. The first sketches the main outlines of a complex emotional state which is of fundamental importance in sexual psychology; the second, by bringing together evidence from widely different regions, suggests a tentative explanation of facts that are still imperfectly known; the third attempts to show that even in fields where we assume our knowledge to be adequate a broader view of the phenomena teaches us to suspend judgment and to adopt a more cautious attitude. So far as they go, these studies are complete in themselves; their special use, as an introduction to a more comprehensive analysis of sexual phenomena, is that they bring before us, under varying aspects, a characteristic which, though often ignored, is of the first importance in obtaining a clear understanding of the facts: the tendency of the sexual impulse to appear in a spontaneous and to some extent periodic manner, affecting women differently from men. This is a tendency which, later, I hope to make still more apparent, for it has practical and social, as well as psychological, implications. Here—and more especially in the study of those spontaneous solitary manifestations which I call auto-erotic—I have attempted to clear the ground, and to indicate the main lines along which the progress of our knowledge in these fields may best be attained.
Download or read book Crinkle Nose written by M. D. Ph. D. Andrew Freese and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crinkle Nose is a fictional novel that introduces Alex, an idealistic young college graduate about to enter his first year at Harvard Medical School, filled with optimism and naivety about his chosen profession. Medical School, however, teaches Alex many lessons about reality and life, and in the process, he discovers his inner self and his own complex motivations. He becomes torn by his affection for two women, who happen to be close friends, but who are polar opposites. One of them, Eileen, is a sexual, fiery coal-haired seductress and fellow medical student, and the other, Mary, a sexually repressed, seemingly innocent, but cold-hearted management trainee. As Alex progresses through his years as a medical student, this novel juxtaposes his emotional, physical and spiritual growth with his divided loyalties to these two women. In the end, Alex is left wondering whether love can prevail and overcome betrayal and pain. Andrew Freese is a neurosurgeon in the Philadelphia area. After graduating with a combined M.D. and Ph.D. from Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he completed a Neurosurgery residency and fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania. Following this, he served on the faculties of several universities and medical schools, culminating in his position as Chairman of Neurosurgery at the University of South Carolina. He is now in private practice with additional academic appointments, and recently founded a spine and consumer products technology company, FreeseTEC. He has authored hundreds of papers and abstracts, several books on clinical neurosciences, and multiple patents. He has lectured throughout the world on his pioneering work in the field of gene therapy for neurological diseases, including the world's first successful human gene therapy trial for a neurological disease, Canavan Disease. He has been featured in numerous popular press articles and television shows, including Dateline. Dr. Freese has four children, the oldest of whom is a student at Harvard, and the other three at a private school in the Philadelphia area. He has participated in the care of approximately 20,000 patients and has performed about 5,000 surgical procedures.

Download or read book Sex written by Joann Ellison Rodgers and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2003-02-11 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How much do you really know about sex? In Sex: A Natural History, Joann Ellison Rodgers unearths both the roots of our sexual nature and the expression of our primal urges, explaining what it is that makes us male and female, and providing fascinating insights into the biology and physiology of flirtation, love, courtship, intercourse, fidelity, parenting, and nurturing. She describes scientists' discoveries about how the hormone that triggers labor contractions keeps prairie voles faithful to one mate, how the brain waves of female mice change when a male comes within smell range, and how Harlequin paperback romances and fantasies can be arousing-and what these findings tell us about our own sexuality. Sex: A Natural History illuminates one of the most powerful, and often misunderstood, aspects of human and animal existence.
