Book From Scarcity to Visibility

Download or read book From Scarcity to Visibility written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-11-16 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although women have made important inroads in science and engineering since the early 1970s, their progress in these fields has stalled over the past several years. This study looks at women in science and engineering careers in the 1970s and 1980s, documenting differences in career outcomes between men and women and between women of different races and ethnic backgrounds. The panel presents what is known about the following questions and explores their policy implications: In what sectors are female Ph.D.s employed? What salary disparities exist between men and women in these fields? How is marital status associated with career attainment? Does it help a career to have a postdoctoral appointment? How well are female scientists and engineers represented in management? Within the broader context of education and the labor market, the book provides detailed comparisons between men and women Ph.D.s in a number of measures: financial support for education, academic rank achieved, salary, and others. The study covers engineering; the mathematical, physical, life, and social and behavioral sciences; medical school faculty; and recipients of National Institutes of Health grants. Findings and recommendations in this volume will be of interest to practitioners, faculty, and students in science and engineering as well as education administrators, employers, and researchers in these fields.

Book Lean In

Book excerpt: #1 INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER • “A landmark manifesto" (The New York Times) that's a revelatory, inspiring call to action and a blueprint for individual growth that will empower women around the world to achieve their full potential. In her famed TED talk, Sheryl Sandberg described how women unintentionally hold themselves back in their careers. Her talk, which has been viewed more than eleven million times, encouraged women to “sit at the table,” seek challenges, take risks, and pursue their goals with gusto. Lean In continues that conversation, combining personal anecdotes, hard data, and compelling research to change the conversation from what women can’t do to what they can. Sandberg, COO of Meta (previously called Facebook) from 2008-2022, provides practical advice on negotiation techniques, mentorship, and building a satisfying career. She describes specific steps women can take to combine professional achievement with personal fulfillment, and demonstrates how men can benefit by supporting women both in the workplace and at home.

Book Sex Discrimination in the Labor Market

Download or read book Sex Discrimination in the Labor Market written by Joni Hersch and published by Now Publishers Inc. This book was released on 2006 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women have made huge advances relative to men in the labor force, occupational status, and educational attainment, but women continue to earn less than men. While the gender pay gap has narrowed, a substantial gap remains. Sex Discrimination in the Labor Market examines sources of this pay disparity and the factors that contribute to this gap. Whether sex discrimination plays a role in the gender pay gap is a topic of considerable debate. Many researchers question the role of discrimination and attribute the residual pay gap to gender differences in preferences, especially with respect to balancing work with family responsibilities. Sex Discrimination in the Labor Market shows that sex discrimination contributes to the unexplained gender pay gap, which is consistent with high profile sex discrimination litigation suggesting continuing bias in the labor market on the basis of sex.

Book Individual Characteristics Significant to Salary Levels of Engineers and Scientists

Download or read book Individual Characteristics Significant to Salary Levels of Engineers and Scientists written by Richard P. Howell and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective comparisons between salaries of one engineer-scientist population and those of another may be made in two ways, using equations developed in this study. The first compares the aggregate salary of a given population with the aggregate salary of the population used in developing the equations of this study. The steps necessary to make such a comparison consist in: (1) obtaining point-of-hire characteristics of the population to be compared, (2) entering the values of the variables called for in the equation developed in this study, (3) computing the sum of the salaries, and (4) comparing results with the sum of the actual salaries being paid. The second type of comparison consists in developing a regression equation concerning the population to be compared, using point-of-hire variables identical with those used in this study. The coefficients or parameters of the resulting equations may then be compared to those of the equations developed here to provide insights concerning the relative emphasis placed by management (knowingly or unknowingly) on selected characteristics of new hires. The coefficients or other parameters amount to a kind of profile, and by knowingly controlling them, a management may choose the characteristics that it wishes to stress in salary determinations. Thus the salary structure may become a more effective means to implement policy.

Book A Comparative Study of Sex Salary Differentials for Full time Workers with a Degree in Science Or Engineering

Download or read book A Comparative Study of Sex Salary Differentials for Full time Workers with a Degree in Science Or Engineering written by Rayna Lynn McKinley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis compares two datasets, the Science and Engineering Indicators 2006 (SEI) and the 1993 National Survey of College Graduates (NSCG), and looks at the impact of sex on full-time annual salary while controlling for different variables. The SEI provides a study based on data from 1999 about the sex effects on salary, adds controls, and records the changes in the effect of sex on salary. The SEI study finds after adding controls for worker heterogeneity and compensating wage differentials, women with bachelor's degrees earn 11.0% less, women with master's degrees earn 8.0% less, and women with doctoral degrees earn 8.4% less than their male counterparts. My analysis of the NSCG finds after adding controls, women with bachelor's degrees earn 18.5% less, women with master?s degrees earn 18.7% less, and women with doctoral degrees earn 15.3% less than their male counterparts. Additionally, in the NSCG and the SEI the field of degree impacted the sex effects the most for bachelor's and master's degree holders. This research is useful to study the difference between these datasets from different time periods. Specifically, the difference in the sex wage gap and in the changing importance of certain variables affecting the sex wage gap.
