Download or read book Studies in the Psychology of Sex Volume 2 written by Havelock Ellis and published by Phoemixx Classics Ebooks. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Psychology of Sex, Volume 2 Havelock Ellis - It has been remarked by Professor Wilhelm Ostwald that the problem of homosexuality is a problem left over to us by the Middle Ages, which for five hundred years dealt with inverts as it dealt with heretics and witches. To regard the matter thus is to emphasize its social and humanitarian interest rather than its biological and psychological significance. It is no doubt this human interest of the question of inversion, rather than its scientific importance, great as the latter is, which is mainly responsible for the remarkable activity with which the study of homosexuality has been carried on during recent years. The result has been that, during the fourteen years that have passed since the last edition of this Study was issued, so vast an amount of work has been carried on in this field that the preparation of a new edition of the book has been a long and serious task. Nearly every page has been rewritten or enlarged and the Index of Authors consulted has more than doubled in length. The original portions of the book have been still more changed; sixteen new Histories have been added, selected from others in my possession as being varied, typical, and full. These extensive additions to the volume have rendered necessary various omissions. Many of the shorter and less instructive Histories contained in earlier editions have been omitted, as well as three Appendices which no longer seem of sufficient interest to retain. In order to avoid undue increase in the size of this volume, already much larger than in the previous editions, a new Study of Eonism, or sexo-esthetic inversion, will be inserted in vol. v, where it will perhaps be at least as much in place as here.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiology of the Amphibia, Volume II focuses on the various aspects of amphibian reproduction, both physiological and behavioral, and the interrelationship between these mechanisms and the environment. Organized into five chapters, the book begins with the integrative functions of the amphibian brain. It then describes the cytophysiology of the amphibian adenohypophysis, as well as their reproductive organs and associated sexual structures. It also discusses the physiology of the process of yolk formation, vitellogenesis. The reproductive and courtship patterns and intersexuality among amphibians are also described. This book will be useful to general biologists as a reference source and to students with interests in animal physiology.

Download or read book Psychiatry in Transition written by Judd Marmor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the first edition of Psychiatry in Transition came out, Dr. Gene Usdin wrote that "to read Marmor's papers is to read not only psychiatric history, but also where that history will be in the next decade." That next decade has happened, and Marmor's papers remain a beacon of professional endeavor. This second edition includes a final chapter on "Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy," in which the historical background of brief psychotherapy, focusing on the contributions of Freud, Ferenczi, Rand, and Alexander, is examined and synthesized. Throughout, certain basic themes stand out. First is the necessity for building upon a solid foundation of scientific thought, coupled with a readiness to change theories that do not fit with established facts. Second, Marmor offers a systems theory to replace simplistic, unitary, or linear theories. Third, he presents some common denominators for illuminating the divergent views that characterize contemporary psychiatric theory and practice. The whole is linked by a deep concern with betterment of the human predicament. Marmor demonstrates that causation in psychiatry can be optimally understood in terms of multiple interacting variables rather than as a response to unitary factors. He foreshadows and predicts developments that are now current in contemporary psychiatric practice, such as the relationship between neurochemistry and behavior, and group therapy with dynamic psychotherapy. He also deals with the importance of cultural and socioeconomic factors in individual personality development. The work concludes with a series of chapters on interethnic hostility, nationalism, and urban violence. Marmor's work clarifies the nature of the psychoanalytic process by liberating it from obscurantism and jargon. This book points the way toward unraveling some of the cognitive dissonance in this area. As Leon Eisenberg observed, this is "an admirable vade mecum of dynamic psychiatry both for residents in training and clinicians in practice."

Download or read book Critical Intersex written by Morgan Holmes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date, intersex studies has not received the scholarly attention it deserves as research in this area has been centred around certain key questions, scholars and geographical regions. Exploring previously neglected territories, this book broadens the scope of intersex studies, whilst adopting perspectives that turn the gaze of the liberal, humanist, scientific outlook upon itself, in order to reconfigure debates about rights, autonomy and subjectivity, and challenges the accepted paradigms of intersex identity politics. Presenting the latest theoretical and empirical research from an international group of experts, this is a truly interdisciplinary volume containing critical approaches from both the humanities and social sciences. With its contributions to sociology, anthropology, medicine, law, history, cultural studies, psychology and psychoanalysis, Critical Intersex will appeal to scholars and clinical practitioners alike.

Download or read book Neuroendocrinology written by Luciano Martini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 798 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroendocrinology, Volume II, is the second in a two-volume treatise designed to provide a survey of all aspects of the rapidly expanding science of neuroendocrinology. Only in recent years have the relations between the nervous system and the endocrine system come under intensive scrutiny, but their interactions have already been shown to be multiple and diverse. This diversity is reflected in the range of subjects covered. There are chapters on neural control of endocrine function; the effects of hormones on the brain; brain-endocrine interrelations during various phases of development; and the comparative aspects of neuroendocrine integration. The relation of brain chemistry to endocrine function, the effect of drugs on neuroendocrine mechanisms, and the new discipline of clinical neuroendocrinology have also been considered. Not only neurophysiologists and endocrinologists, but pharmacologists, zoologists, biochemists, psychologists, and those in clinical medicine will find the treatise of interest. Parts of neuroendocrinology have been discussed in other works, but this is the first treatise in which an attempt has been made to cover all ramifications of neuroendocrinology. This book can be used both as a text for advanced students and as a reference source.

Download or read book The Control of Fertility written by Gregory Pincus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Control of Fertility is concerned with the experimental control of fertility as a specific biological problem. It is, first of all, an attempt to summarize a collection of data hitherto either partially or not at all presented. Secondly, it attempts to indicate those avenues which hold promise for future investigation. Finally, it attempts an assessment of the implications of understandings and ignorances. The book opens with an account of the sequence of processes essential to successful sexual reproduction in mammals. This is followed by separate chapters on approaches to the inhibition of spermatogenesis, ovulation, fertilization, and free ovum development. Subsequent chapters deal with blastocyst development and implantation, biological activities of compounds affecting fertility, fertility control in men and women, the inhibition of ovulation, biological properties of ovulation inhibitors in human subjects, and effectiveness and acceptability of contraception.
