Book Sex and Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Renal Diseases and Hypertension

Download or read book Sex and Gender Differences in Cardiovascular Renal Diseases and Hypertension written by Jane Reckelhoff and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the mechanisms responsible for cardiovascular disease and hypertension are well known, and gender is an independent risk factor in many cohorts. How gender contributes to cardiovascular disease has not been completely elucidated. Even in normotensive populations, blood pressure is higher in men than women, although why this occurs is unclear. While both men and women suffer from high incidences of cardiovascular disease, women are typically protected against cardiovascular disease until after menopause, so that on average they are about 10 years older than men when these diseases develop, making aging a confounding problem contributing to increased morbidity. Because hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease in both men and women, this review will focus on hypertension, and the mechanisms that have been found to play a role in mediating blood pressure control and how they differ in men and women.

Book Gender Differences in the Pathogenesis and Management of Heart Disease

Download or read book Gender Differences in the Pathogenesis and Management of Heart Disease written by Jawahar Mehta and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews all aspects of the diagnosis and management of heart disease in women, covering areas such as gender differences in metabolic syndrome, hypertension and atherogenesis. Gender differences in cardiovascular diseases are widespread, but while gender medicine takes into account the effects of sex and gender on the health of women and men, traditionally, women have been underrepresented in cardiovascular clinical trials, in management of different cardiac diseases and drug use. Gender Differences in the Pathogenesis and Management of Heart Disease deals with the gender-specific differences in cardiac physiology and diseases and brings into perspective the critical significance of gender in management of cardiovascular disease presentations and management. As such it is of enormous use to all clinical staff who manage women with cardiovascular disease.

Book Sex and Gender Differences in Health and Disease

Download or read book Sex and Gender Differences in Health and Disease written by Ricky L. Langley and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing recognition that males and females may respond differently to disease processes and treatments. Past medical research was often limited to male subjects with the assumption that females reacted similarly to males. However, recent research often shows this not to be the case. It is important that health care workers be aware of these differences so that optimal health care can be provided. Sex and Gender Differences in Health and Disease is intended to inform physicians and other health care providers, medical anthropologists, epidemiologist, and sex and gender researchers and educators about the vast number of diseases that may manifest differently in males and females. This book takes an organ system approach. Normal anatomical and physiological differences are initially discussed, followed by a section on diseases of that specific organ system. In the disease section, differences in the frequency of occurrence between the sexes are presented. In addition, sex and gender differences in pathological processes for various diseases are discussed. The diseases are arranged in alphabetical order by organ system, making it easy to locate a specific disease. This is the most comprehensive reference book on sex and gender differences as they relate to health and disease. It is hoped that this book will stimulate students and professionals to better understand why differences occur and to include both sexes in future research.

Book Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health

Download or read book Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-07-02 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's obvious why only men develop prostate cancer and why only women get ovarian cancer. But it is not obvious why women are more likely to recover language ability after a stroke than men or why women are more apt to develop autoimmune diseases such as lupus. Sex differences in health throughout the lifespan have been documented. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health begins to snap the pieces of the puzzle into place so that this knowledge can be used to improve health for both sexes. From behavior and cognition to metabolism and response to chemicals and infectious organisms, this book explores the health impact of sex (being male or female, according to reproductive organs and chromosomes) and gender (one's sense of self as male or female in society). Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health discusses basic biochemical differences in the cells of males and females and health variability between the sexes from conception throughout life. The book identifies key research needs and opportunities and addresses barriers to research. Exploring the Biological Contributions to Human Health will be important to health policy makers, basic, applied, and clinical researchers, educators, providers, and journalists-while being very accessible to interested lay readers.

Book Management of Cardiovascular Disease in Women

Download or read book Management of Cardiovascular Disease in Women written by Hanna Z. Mieszczanska and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-03-24 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US, with more women dying from heart disease than men. Women may have different presentation from men and often need a different approach to diagnosis and treatment. There are also unique topics of management of heart disease in women, including issues during pregnancy, lactation, and menopause. Many different health care providers, as well as cardiologists are involved in treating these patients. A manual reviewing diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease in women would help providers without specific cardiology training to deliver care with greater efficiency. A practical and comprehensive guide geared towards these providers would be a highly practical and valuable resource that would be utilized in everyday practice in offices that include urban clinics, general medicine offices, obstetrics and gynecology offices, as well as in the surgical subspecialties. This book will be a highly practical resource that can be directly applied to the issues that arise in everyday practice. There is no available book on the market that focuses on a broader approach to cardiac disease in women or focuses on non-cardiology providers (and their trainees) who have the need to know more about treatment of cardiovascular disease in women.

Book Sex and Gender in Acute Care Medicine

Download or read book Sex and Gender in Acute Care Medicine written by Alyson J. McGregor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-20 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the past decade, clinicians and researchers assumed that the medical evaluation and treatment of both women and men were the same. This archaic and dangerous notion persisted in spite of the clear anatomic and physiologic differences between the genders. Today, we fully understand that this paradigm is false. In all specialties of medicine, practitioners and researchers are beginning to consider the influence of sex and gender and how it should inform the care of their patients. This book focuses on the issue of sex and gender in the evaluation and treatment of patients specifically in the delivery of acute medical care. It serves as a guide both to clinicians interested in the impact of sex and gender on their practice and to researchers interested in the current state of the art in the field and critical future research directions.
