This much-anticipated second edition brings the discussion up to date, applying the same thorough analysis to illuminate the rapid changes now shaping our regional landscapes. This new edition draws upon contemporary analyses, projects, and literature to address issues of spatial complexity now facing regional planners in Canada. Special attention is paid to he regional planning dimensions of climate change adaptation and environmental sustainability across Canada, the development inequities faced in peripheral resource regions, the role that Aboriginal peoples must play in the planning of their regions, and the distinctive planning needs of metropolitan regions across the country. This book challenges planners, educators, and policy makers to engage with the latest thinking and strive for best practices in twenty-first century regional planning.

Book Shaping the Metropolis

Download or read book Shaping the Metropolis written by Zack Taylor and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising income inequality and concentrated poverty threaten the social sustainability of North American cities. Suburban growth endangers sensitive ecosystems, water supplies, and food security. Existing urban infrastructure is crumbling while governments struggle to pay for new and expanded services. Can our inherited urban governance institutions and policies effectively respond to these problems? In Shaping the Metropolis Zack Taylor compares the historical development of American and Canadian urban governance, both at the national level and through specific metropolitan case studies. Examining Minneapolis–St Paul and Portland, Oregon, in the United States, and Toronto and Vancouver in Canada, Taylor shows how differences in the structure of governing institutions in American states and Canadian provinces cumulatively produced different forms of urban governance. Arguing that since the nineteenth century American state governments have responded less effectively to rapid urban growth than Canadian provinces, he shows that the concentration of authority in Canadian provincial governments enabled the rapid adoption of coherent urban policies after the Second World War, while dispersed authority in American state governments fostered indecision and catered to parochial interests. Most contemporary policy problems and their solutions are to be found in cities. Shaping the Metropolis shows that urban governance encompasses far more than local government, and that states and provinces have always played a central role in responding to urban policy challenges and will continue to do so in the future.

Book Revitalizing the City

Download or read book Revitalizing the City written by Fritz W. Wagner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical work demonstrates that controlling urban growth and reviving central city economies are not mutually exclusive endeavors. Rather than re-hash theories of urban development, the contributors describe and evaluate successful community-tested approaches to sustaining our cities. Revitalizing the City provides actual case examples of urban success stories - ranging from San Diego's "smart growth" initiative to brownfield redevelopment in Pittsburgh. The book is divided into four major sections - Urban Growth; Metropolitan Development and Administration; Central City Redevelopment Strategies; and Central City-Suburban Cooperation. Each chapter includes an analysis of key issues, descriptions of specific local initiatives, highlights of effective policies or programs, and potential pitfalls to avoid. Revitalizing the City has broad appeal for the urban policy community as well as for undergraduate and graduate courses in urban sociology, geography, political science, and urban studies and planning.

Book Sustainable Policies and Practices in Energy Environment and Health Research

Download or read book Sustainable Policies and Practices in Energy Environment and Health Research written by Walter Leal Filho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to give a contribution to a more comprehensive and interdisciplinary understanding of the cross-cutting issues on energy, environment and health research topics in the current world scenario, where nations all over the world are struggling to accomplish the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and to ensure sustainable patterns for all. This interdisciplinary implies a commitment between all fields of science, working together to provide knowledge that could result in the promotion of quality of life. At the present, it is evident that not all people benefit from sustainable policies and practices and the communication between health, energy, environmental and social problems is undeniable. A call for different views could be a pathway attracting universities, stakeholders, organizations and civil society to deeply discuss how one solution does not fit all societies. Few publications are coherently handling this matter. This book is expected to fill this gap and to develop an interest in a larger audience working in general sustainable development and cross-cutting issues. This book is produced by the European School of Sustainability Science and Research (ESSSR). It gives special emphasis to state-of-the-art descriptions of approaches, methods, initiatives and projects from universities, stakeholders, organizations and civil society across the world, regarding cross-cutting issues in energy, environment and health research.
