Book Intermediate Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Intermediate Organic Chemistry written by Michael Leonard and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mission of Intermediate Organic Chemistry is to bridge the gap between introductory Organic Chemistry coursework and advanced/graduate-level coursework but to do so in a way that extends the student-centered approach of most modern introductory Organic Chemistry textbooks. This text makes extensive use of detailed explanations and color coding to facilitate the learning process. This text's style is one that is shared by many instructors of Organic Chemistry: mechanistically driven and detailed. Extensive use of color coding helps students to learn mechanism and cogently predict reaction products. The electrons that are mechanistically involved in each transformation are color coded. The mechanistic arrows originating from those electrons are colored identically, as are the bonds and/or lone pairs that result from the electron flow. This approach, along with detailed verbal explanations, conveys the narrative of the mechanism.

Book Eilhard Mitscherlich Prince of Prussian Chemistry

Download or read book Eilhard Mitscherlich Prince of Prussian Chemistry written by Hans-Werner Schütt and published by Chemical Heritage Foundation. This book was released on 1997 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eilhard Mitscherlich (1794-1863) holds an important position among the chemists who created the basis of postLavoisier chemistry. His discoveries of iso- and polymorphism; his pioneering work on catalysis; and his research on benzene and benzene derivatives, the formation of ethers, and alchoholic fermentation belong to the truly fundamental achievements of classical chemistry. In 1822, at the instigation of his mentor Berzelius, Mitscherlich became the successor of Klaproth both as member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences and as full professor at the Friedrich-Wilhelm University. Despite his long quarrels with Liebig, the most influential chemist in Germany, Mitscherlich remained the most eminent representative of chemistry in Prussia. When he died, an epoch of chemistry in Berlin drew to an end.

Book Enough for One Lifetime

Download or read book Enough for One Lifetime written by Matthew E. Hermes and published by Chemical Heritage Foundation. This book was released on 1996 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a story of invention and chemistry and the ineluctable fate of the inventor of nylon. Wallace Carothers was hired by DuPont in 1928 to lead a program called basic research. Carothers brought a passion to his work, and wanted to synthesize large molecules that would challenge Emil Fischer's largest molecule of 4200 molecular weight. In a burst of creativity in the spring of 1930, Carothers gave us our first truly synthetic rubber and fiber. The rubber quickly became neoprene; the fiber, in time, led to nylon. Carothers took an infant science called polymer chemistry, defined it, and guided it toward its present maturity. He gave us condensation polymerization. Hermes tells Carothers' story - his sudden, dramatic research successes and his relentless slide into depression, alcohol, and suicide - through Carothers' revealing letters to his professional colleagues (Roger Adams, C. S. Marvel, John R. Johnson) and his family and college classmates. At the end, Carothers' habit was to hide himself from his co-workers and friends. Hermes' narrative searches for the shrouded heart of the inventor's story by using stories of F. Scott Fitzgerald and other contemporaries as parables from which Carothers' truth may be drawn.
