Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 110 million members worldwide, Baptists are surpassed only by Roman Catholic and Orthodox groups as the largest segment of Christians. Book Conscientious Objectors in the Civil War

Download or read book Conscientious Objectors in the Civil War written by Edward Needles Wright and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-05 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “conscientious objector” was not in use during the Civil War, but the concept certainly existed. This engrossing volume is an authoritative, thoroughly researched study of the whole problem of objection to warfare on religious or moral grounds, as it existed during the Civil War. The author covers five major areas: the types of individuals and which religious denominations were actually opposed to the war on conscientious grounds; what efforts were made on behalf of objectors and what changes took place in their political status; the attitude of the civil and military authorities toward objectors; the number of objectors; and, finally, a comparison of the problem of conscientious objection in the Civil War with the same problem as it existed for the United States during the First World War. The facts presented in this volume are of historical interest; the conclusions the author draws, however, are, if anything, more relevant and important today than they were during any other period in American history.

Book Sabbath and Sectarianism in Seventeenth Century England

Download or read book Sabbath and Sectarianism in Seventeenth Century England written by David S. Katz and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1988-12-01 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the practical application of a religious idea: the belief in the continuing validity of the Old Testament, especially the Ten Commandments, which ordained the observance of the Sabbath on the seventh day, Saturday. The author traces the growth and development of the most radical of English Sabbath observers, those who revered the Jewish Sabbath in a Christian context. But this is not only a pre-history of the Seventh-Day Adventists. It is also the story of the remarkable persistence of a revolutionary religious belief powerful and convincing enough to survive the Restoration and continue into modern times. The Saturday-Sabbath gradually became institutionalized in a nonconformist sect in which the ideological foundation was sufficient to unite men who on political grounds should have been the most bitter of enemies, including Fifth Monarchists, millenarians, neutrals, and Royalists alike. That those men and their followers could amicably join forces after the Restoration is testimony to the power of religious ideas which might overshadow the political affiliations of the civil war.
