Download or read book Baroque Seville written by Amanda Wunder and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baroque art flourished in seventeenth-century Seville during a tumultuous period of economic decline, social conflict, and natural disasters. This volume explores the patronage that fueled this frenzy of religious artistic and architectural activity and the lasting effects it had on the city and its citizens. Amanda Wunder investigates the great public projects of sacred artwork that were originally conceived as medios divinos—divine solutions to the problems that plagued Seville. These commissions included new polychromed wooden sculptures and richly embroidered clothing for venerable old images, gilded altarpieces and monumental paintings for church interiors, elaborate ephemeral decorations and festival books by which to remember them, and the gut renovation or rebuilding of major churches that had stood for hundreds of years. Meant to revive the city spiritually, these works also had a profound real-world impact. Participation in the production of sacred artworks elevated the social standing of the artists who made them and the devout benefactors who commissioned them, and encouraged laypeople to rally around pious causes. Using a diverse range of textual and visual sources, Wunder provides a compelling look at the complex visual world of seventeenth-century Seville and the artistic collaborations that involved all levels of society in the attempt at its revitalization. Vibrantly detailed and thoroughly researched, Baroque Seville is a fascinating account of Seville’s hard-won transformation into one of the foremost centers of Baroque art in Spain during a period of crisis.

Download or read book Flemish Paintings of the Seventeenth Century written by Arthur K. Wheelock and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The National Gallery of Art's collection of seventeenth-century Flemish paintings is relatively small, numbering less than sixty, but exceptional in quality. At the core of the collection are twelve paintings by Sir Peter Paul Rubens and his school and seventeen paintings by Sir Anthony van Dyck, including some of their finest masterpieces. Also represented are excellent works by other important Flemish masters, among them Osias Beert the Elder, Adriaen Brouwer, Jan Brueghel the Elder, and David Teniers the Younger." "This catalogue of the Gallery's remarkable collection of Flemish paintings offers new information about each of the individual works. Stylistic characteristics of the paintings have been analyzed; historical circumstances related to their creation have been assessed; and their provenances have been reexamined. A number of the paintings have undergone conservation treatment, while the technical characteristics of other works have been thoroughly studied. This exhaustive research has indicated that the titles, dates, and even attributions of a number of works needed to be changed, and the catalogue includes a concordance of these revisions."--BOOK JACKET.

Download or read book Europe in the Age of Monarchy written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1987 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume reproduces over 125 works of art in every genre and medium from the collections of the Metropolitan Museum. They give a breathtaking picture of a turbulent and exciting epoch, which was at once the Age of Monarchy and a Golden Age of art. Just as its kings and queens are still exemplars of glorious majesty and shrewd statesmanship, so the artists of that century remain for us the Old Masters of European art: Caravaggio, Bernini, Tiepolo, Guardi; El Greco, Velazquez; Rubens, van Dyck; Hals, Rembrandt, Vermeer, van Ruisdael; de La Tour, Poussin, Claude, Watteau, Bourcher, Chardin. In every medium, the clash and complicity of the traditional Classical style and the newer Baroque vision bequeathed us a rich treasure."--Page 4 of cover.
