Requests came from various persons within the audience and pastors, respectively, of various congregations. "Please, please may I have a copy posthaste of your message to share with my church?" ... to share with my neighbors?" From subsequent praise reports and unsolicited comments, seemingly, numerous people have been tremendously blessed by these messages. After considerable editing and word processing, plus making and mailing innumerable copies, a voice was heard loud and clear, "Compile into a book seven of your speeches delivered within the last seven years to be a blessing to millions around the world." Herewith is the result of obeying that voice. To all who read these God-given messages, it is sincerely hoped that you will be marvelously blessed.

Book Emotions and Material Culture

Download or read book Emotions and Material Culture written by Gerhard Jaritz and published by Austrian Academy of Sciences Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Material objects must always be seen in context with the humans who created and used them. It is only possible to recognize and evaluate material culture in connection with human thought and behavior. The material world depends on the immaterial one, and vice versa. Neither sphere can exist without the other. In historical research, however, such contexts have not been considered regularly. In particular, the inter-connections between emotions and material culture have not been taken sufficiently into account in research. This was the reason for the "Institut fur Realienkunde des Mittelalters und der fruhen Neuzeit" to organize a round-table-discussion on "Emotions and Material Culture" and to publish its proceedings. The volume contains eleven contributions by specialists from eight countries. They show various possibilities to contextualize the material world and emotional behavior. They may be seen as a first step towards a "material emotionology" of the past. The complex results are intended to serve as a further impetus towards the systematic and comparative research into "emotional communities" and their material life in the Middle Ages and the early modern period.

Book Land and Lordship

    Book Details:
  • Author : Otto Brunner
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2015-07-28
  • ISBN : 1512801062
  • Pages : 490 pages

Download or read book Land and Lordship written by Otto Brunner and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Otto Brunner contends that prevailing notions of medieval social and constitutional history had been shaped by the nineteenth-century nation state and its "liberal" order. Whereas a sharp distinction between the public and the private might be appropriate to descriptions of contemporary society, such a dichotomy could not be projected back onto the Middle Ages. Focusing particularly on forms of lordship in late medieval Austria, Brunner found neither a "state" in the modern sense nor any distinction between the public and private spheres. Behind the apparent disorder of late medieval political life, however, Brunner discovered a coherent legal and constitutional order rooted in the the rights and obligations of noble lordship. In carefully reconstructing this order, Brunner's study weaves together social, legal, constitutional, and intellectual history.

Book Naked Before the Father

Download or read book Naked Before the Father written by Richard C. Trexler and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1989 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the dramatic confrontation in 1206 between Francis of Assisi and his father, Pietro di Bernardone: renouncing property, Francis left civil life and ultimately founded a new religious order. Carefully examining the documentary and artistic evidence to understand this event, Trexler determines that the conflict between the men was actually over women's property - that of Francis's mother, Pica. In a meticulous study of the early biographers, he also discovers that they created two different tales of the renunciation to match different notions about Franciscan poverty. The study is a significant contribution to women's, religious, and art history.

Book The Elect Nation

    Book Details:
  • Author : Lorenzo Polizzotto
  • Publisher : Oxford-Warburg Studies
  • Release : 1994
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 512 pages

Download or read book The Elect Nation written by Lorenzo Polizzotto and published by Oxford-Warburg Studies. This book was released on 1994 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elect Nation is the first comprehensive study of the religious, political and cultural movement inspired by Savonarola. Based on a thorough examination of the archival material and manuscript sources, the book argues that the followers of Savonarola exercised a profound influence on every facet of Florentine life during the important period of the city's transition from republic to principate. It is the author's contention that their ideology and activities provide the key to understanding not only the Florentine Republic, but also the nature of contemporary political debate and the characteristics of the emerging Medicean Principate. A major preoccupation of the book is to show how the Savonarolans as a group managed to survive the execution of their leaders and to regain their strength and influence. The author traces their networks of support and analyses the way in which they infiltrated and restructured existing Florentine institutions to their advantage. He also reveals how they exploited spiritual counselling and lay and religious patronage to expand their influence and, in particular, how they ensured the survival of their movement by forming an anti-Medicean alliance of republican forces in Florence.

Book The Uses of Supernatural Power

Download or read book The Uses of Supernatural Power written by Gábor Klaniczay and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of essays is concerned with aspects of religion, magic, and witchcraft in medieval and early-modern Europe, with particular reference to Central Europe. Drawing on a range of theoretical and methodological work including that of Elias, Geertz, Bakhtin, and Turner, the author gives special attention to the history of the body and of gesture, of symbolism and representation, and shows how these dimensions can be related to religious and mystical beliefs and practices. Among the topics discussed are conflicts in twelfth-century Christianity and the tensions between popular religion and learned urban Christianity; heretical and nonconformist behavior in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries; the celestial courts of holy princesses in thirteenth-century Central Europe; shamanistic elements in Central European witchcraft; witch-beliefs and witch- hunting in Hungary in the early-modern period; and the decline of beliefs in witches and the rise of beliefs about vampires in the eighteenth-century Habsburg monarchy.
