Many books have been written on the theory, principles and application of generator protective relaying. Therefore, the theory in this book is very concise and to the point.

Book Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems

Download or read book Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems written by Donald Reimert and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Power outages have considerable social and economic impacts, and effective protection schemes are crucial to avoiding them. While most textbooks focus on the transmission and distribution aspects of protective relays, Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems is the first to focus on protection of motors and generators from a power generation perspective. It also includes workbook constructions that allow students to perform protection-related calculations in Mathcad® and Excel®. This text provides both a general overview and in-depth discussion of each topic, making it easy to tailor the material to students' needs. It also covers topics not found in other texts on the subject, including detailed time decrement generator fault calculations and minimum excitation limit. The author clearly explains the potential for damage and damaging mechanisms related to each protection function and includes thorough derivations of complex system interactions. Such derivations underlie the various rule-of-thumb setting criteria, provide insight into why the rules-of-thumb work and when they are not appropriate, and are useful for post-incident analysis. The book's flexible approach combines theoretical discussions with example settings that offer quick how-to information. Protective Relaying for Power Generation Systems integrates fundamental knowledge with practical tools to ensure students have a thorough understanding of protection schemes and issues that arise during or after abnormal operation.

Book Calculations of Protective Relay Settings for a Unit Generator Following Catastrophic Failure

Download or read book Calculations of Protective Relay Settings for a Unit Generator Following Catastrophic Failure written by Jaime Anthony Ybarra and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: After a catastrophic failure of a unit generator system the major components may need to be replaced. Many times exact replacement of the failed or damaged components may not be possible. In such a case components with electrical characteristics as close to the original may be used. Therefore new protective relay settings must be calculated. In this thesis, we will examine a type of generator protection relays, evaluate new settings and develop a one-line diagram for a 25 MVA generator system. A methodology for the development of a safe and reliable protections scheme for a unit generator system is also presented.

Book Digital Protective Relays

Download or read book Digital Protective Relays written by Vladimir Gurevich and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital (microprocessor-based) protection relays (DPR) are dominating the global market today, essentially pushing all other types of relays out of the picture. These devices play a vital role in power operations for fields ranging from manufacturing, transportation, and communication to banking and healthcare. Digital Protective Relays: Problems and Solutions offers a unique focus on the problems and disadvantages associated with their use, a crucial aspect that goes largely unexamined. While there is already a massive amount of literature documenting the benefits of using digital relays, devices as sophisticated as DPR obviously have faults and drawbacks that need to be understood. This book covers these, delving into the less familiar inner workings of DPR to fill a critical literary void and help decision makers and specialists in the field of protection relays find their way out of the informational vacuum. The book provides vital information to assist them in evaluating relay producers' claims and then choose the right product. Tearing away the informational "curtain" that exists today, this book: Describes construction of functional modules of existing relays Analyzes drawbacks and problems of digital relays Details specific technical problems and their solutions Assesses dangers of intentional destructive electromagnetic intrusions Discusses alternative (non-microprocessor-based) protection relays, and problems related to international standards Focusing on practical solutions, this book explains how to correctly choose digital relays and ensure their proper use while avoiding the many problems they can present. The author avoids mathematics and theory in favor of more practical, tangible information not easily found elsewhere. Setting itself apart from other books on the subject, this volume shines a light into the long hidden "black box" of information

Book Design of a New Digital Relaying Algorithm for a Generator Protection Against Loss of Field

Download or read book Design of a New Digital Relaying Algorithm for a Generator Protection Against Loss of Field written by Mahmud Hasen Musa and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this thesis is to develop a new digital-relaying algorithm for theprotection of the generator in case of loss of its field current. In order to establish this goal the following steps are followed:-Firstly a study of the main protection requirements of an electric generator was done in order to form a common understanding about the most essential protection devices used for this purpose. Loss of field protection of asynchronous generator was given more attention, with special concentration onthe disadvantages of the conventional relaying method based on the applicationof a mho distance relay.-Secondly a study of the operational characteristics of the generator during steady and transient states were done. These studies focus on the reactive power output from the generator, and its characteristics during loss of field.-Thirdly attention is directed to the study of the traditional method used to protect.generators in case of loss of field with concentration on its disadvantages inorder to overcome them in the planned new relaying algorithm. The traditionalmethod uses an offset mho distance relay , which measures the impedance of thegenerator seen at its terminals and compares it to the setting values of the relay .-Then the new algorithm based on the direction of the reactive power flowthrough the generator was introduced. This algorithm measures the movingaverage of the total reactive power output of the generator over a complete cycle of the system frequency and compares it to its setting values.-In the last section a computer simulation study was performed on a representative power system to test the response of this new algorithm for actual loss of field, and for other abnormal operating conditions.-, Finally a collection of conclusions and suggested recommendations were given at the end of this thesis.
