Book Set Valued Dynamical Systems and Economic Flow

Download or read book Set Valued Dynamical Systems and Economic Flow written by L. J. Jr. Cherene and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to illuminate the central issues of dynamic analysis applied to economic models, using a generally accepted language of the study of dynamical systems at a level of sophistication likely to be understood by an economist versed in elementary topology. Whether an economic system is governed by a first order difference equation or several simultaneous multivalued partial differential equations, its solution is a flow that determines the state of the system given an initial condition and elapsed time. Thus the flow of a system is the central concept from which the theory here expounded develops. The explicit examples and applications herein are discrete time models, but the theoretical re sults hold for continuous time models as well. The supplementary bibliography in cludes several papers at the frontier of set-valued dynamics which may be viewed using the basic concepts defined in this text; all of these works involve demon strating that (almost) all possible trajectories that a system may follow converge to some set of equilibria. The application of set valued dynamical analysis to economic models is pro~ vided to engender in the reader an appreciation for the relevance of these con cepts to economic theory.

Book Set Valued Convex and Nonsmooth Analysis in Dynamics and Control

Download or read book Set Valued Convex and Nonsmooth Analysis in Dynamics and Control written by Rafal K. Goebel and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set-valued analysis, convex analysis, and nonsmooth analysis are relatively modern branches of mathematical analysis that have become increasingly relevant in current control theory and control engineering literature. This book serves as a broad introduction to analytical tools in these fields and to their applications in dynamical and control systems and is the first to cover these topics with this scope and at this level. Both continuous-time and discrete-time mutlivalued dynamics, modeled by differential and difference inclusions, are considered. Set-Valued, Convex, and Nonsmooth Analysis in Dynamics and Control: An Introduction is aimed at graduate students in control engineering and applied mathematics and researchers in control engineering who have no prior exposure to set-valued, convex, and nonsmooth analysis. The book will also be of interest to advanced undergraduate mathematics students and mathematicians with no prior exposure to the topic. The expected mathematical background is a course on nonlinear differential equations / dynamical systems and a course on real analysis. Knowledge of some control theory is helpful, but not essential.

Book Extremal Methods and Systems Analysis

Download or read book Extremal Methods and Systems Analysis written by A. V. Fiacco and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers appearing in this Volume were selected from a collec tion of papers presented at the Internationa~ Symposium on Extrema~ Methods and Systems Ana~ysis on the Occasion of Professor A. Charnes' 60th Birthday, at the University of Texas in Austin, 13-15 September 1977. As coeditors, we have followed the normal editorial procedures of scholarly journals. We have obtained invaluable assistance from a number of colleagues who essentially performed the duties of associate editors, coordinating most of the reviews. All papers except those appearing in the Historica~ Perspectives section were refereed by at least two individuals with competency in the respective area. Because of the wide range and diversity of the topics, it would have been im possible for us to make a consistently rational selection of papers without the help of the associate editors and referees. We are indeed grateful to them. The breadth of extremal methods and systems analysis, suggested by the range of topics covered in these papers, is characteristic of the field and also of the scholarly work of Professor Charnes. Extre mal methods and systems analysis has been a pioneering and systematic approach to the development and application of new scientific theories and methods for problems of management and operations in both the pri vate and public sectors, spanning all major disciplines from economics to engineering.

Book Estimation of Simultaneous Equation Models with Error Components Structure

Download or read book Estimation of Simultaneous Equation Models with Error Components Structure written by Jayalakshmi Krishnakumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economists can rarely perform controlled experiments to generate data. Existing information in the form of real-life observations simply has to be utilized in the best possible way. Given this, it is advantageous to make use of the increasing availability and accessibility of combinations of time-series and cross-sectional data in the estimation of economic models. But such data call for a new methodology of estimation and hence for the development of new econometric models. This book proposes one such new model which introduces error components in a system of simultaneous equations to take into account the temporal and cross-sectional heterogeneity of panel data. After a substantial survey of panel data models, the newly proposed model is presented in detail and indirect estimations, full information and limited information estimations, and estimations with and without the assumption of normal distribution errors. These estimation methods are then applied using a computer to estimate a model of residential electricity demand using data on American households. The results are analysed both from an economic and from a statistical point of view.

Book Input Output Modeling

Download or read book Input Output Modeling written by Anatoli Smyshlyaev and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Input-output modeling has, through the years, provided a consistent and unifying focus for IIASA's economic research. Scientists working in the Institute, first in the economic modeling task of the System and Decision Sciences area and later within the Economic Structural Change project, have cooperated extensively with colleagues throughout the world in advancing and contributing to input-output work. Perhaps the most notable aspect of these efforts has been the joint work with the INFORUM Project to develop linked systems of national models. Experience gained from the INFORUM-IIASA studies has been of great benefit to other members of the I/O community, but this is by no means the end of the story. Contributors not connected with INFORUM have also brought their own very valuable insights and knowledge to bear on the subject, and input-output modeling has moved progressively away from being a purely academic specialization. A number of the methods developed have direct application to economic analysis and policy formulation, and I/O techniques have achieved widespread use in both governmental and commercial environments. This volume presents the results of the fifth in a series of meetings organized by IIASA to promote methodological advances in the subject and to draw on a pool of I/O expertise so as to further the aims of the Institute's in-house economic research.

Book Nondifferentiable Optimization Motivations and Applications

Download or read book Nondifferentiable Optimization Motivations and Applications written by Vladimir F. Demyanov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg, Austria, has been involved in research on nondifferentiable optimization since 1976. IIASA-based East-West cooperation in this field has been very productive, leading to many important theoretical, algorithmic and applied results. Nondifferentiable optimi zation has now become a recognized and rapidly developing branch of mathematical programming. To continue this tradition, and to review recent developments in this field, IIASA held a Workshop on Nondifferentiable Optimization in Sopron (Hungary) in September 1964. The aims of the Workshop were: 1. To discuss the state-of-the-art of nondifferentiable optimization (NDO), its origins and motivation; 2. To compare-various algorithms; 3. To evaluate existing mathematical approaches, their applications and potential; 4. To extend and deepen industrial and other applications of NDO. The following topics were considered in separate sessions: General motivation for research in NDO: nondifferentiability in applied problems, nondifferentiable mathematical models. Numerical methods for solving nondifferentiable optimization problems, numerical experiments, comparisons and software. Nondifferentiable analysis: various generalizations of the concept of subdifferen tials. Industrial and other applications. This volume contains selected papers presented at the Workshop. It is divided into four sections, based on the above topics: I. Concepts in Nonsmooth Analysis II. Multicriteria Optimization and Control Theory III. Algorithms and Optimization Methods IV. Stochastic Programming and Applications We would like to thank the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, particularly Prof. V. Kaftanov and Prof. A.B. Kurzhanski, for their support in organiz ing this meeting.

Book Plural Rationality and Interactive Decision Processes

Download or read book Plural Rationality and Interactive Decision Processes written by Manfred Grauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These Proceedings report the scientific results of the Summer Study on Plural Rationality and Interactive Decision Processes orga nized jointly by the System and Decision Sciences Program of the Inter national Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (located in Laxenburg, Austria) and the Hungarian Committee for Applied Systems Analysis. The Study, which was held in Sopron over the period 16-26 Augus·t 1984, had a very special character. Sixty-eight researchers from sixteen coun tr~es participated, most of them contributing papers or experiments. In addition many members of IIASA's Young Scientists Summer Program were present. All of these participants were heavily involved in dis cussions; discussions that were not limited to the allotted time but extended well into the evenings and nights. By design, the Study gathered specialists from many disciplines, from philosophy and cultur al anthropology, through decision theory, game theory and economics, to engineering and applied mathematics. A further element of diversity was the representation of several varieties of culture, from typically Western countries, through Middle and Eastern Europe, to the Far East.

Book Refinements of the Nash Equilibrium Concept

Download or read book Refinements of the Nash Equilibrium Concept written by E. van Damme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this monograph, noncooperative games are studied. Since in a noncooperative game binding agreements are not possible, the solution of such a game has to be self enforcing, i. e. a Nash equilibrium (NASH [1950,1951J). In general, however, a game may possess many equilibria and so the problem arises which one of these should be chosen as the solution. It was first pointed out explicitly in SELTEN [1965J that I not all Nash equilibria of an extensive form game are qualified to be selected as the solution, since an equilibrium may prescribe irrational behavior at unreached parts of the game tree. Moreover, also for normal form games not all Nash equilibria are eligible, since an equilibrium need not be robust with respect to slight perturba tions in the data of the game. These observations lead to the conclusion that the Nash equilibrium concept has to be refined in order to obtain sensible solutions for every game. In the monograph, various refinements of the Nash equilibrium concept are studied. Some of these have been proposed in the literature, but others are presented here for the first time. The objective is to study the relations between these refine ments;to derive characterizations and to discuss the underlying assumptions. The greater part of the monograph (the chapters 2-5) is devoted to the study of normal form games. Extensive form games are considered in chapter 6.

Book Convexity and Duality in Optimization

Download or read book Convexity and Duality in Optimization written by Jacob Ponstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis and optimization of convex functions have re ceived a great deal of attention during the last two decades. If we had to choose two key-words from these developments, we would retain the concept of ~ubdi66~e~ and the duality theo~y. As it usual in the development of mathematical theories, people had since tried to extend the known defi nitions and properties to new classes of functions, including the convex ones. For what concerns the generalization of the notion of subdifferential, tremendous achievements have been carried out in the past decade and any rna·· thematician who is faced with a nondifferentiable nonconvex function has now a panoply of generalized subdifferentials or derivatives at his disposal. A lot remains to be done in this area, especially concerning vecto~-valued functions ; however we think the golden age for these researches is behind us. Duality theory has also fascinated many mathematicians since the underlying mathematical framework has been laid down in the context of Convex Analysis. The various duality schemes which have emerged in the re cent years, despite of their mathematical elegance, have not always proved as powerful as expected.
