Book The History of Fort St Joseph

Download or read book The History of Fort St Joseph written by Graeme Mount and published by Dundurn. This book was released on 2000-01-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In early 1812, as the British and the Americans were on the brink of war in North America, Fort St. Joseph was not thought to be of much importance to the British cause. It was disregarded as a useless, poorly located post. But when war was delcared, the garrison at Fort St. Joseph pulled off a miracle: it captured the American Fort Mackinac, and for the remainder of the War of 1812 the British never relinquished control of the Upper Great Lakes. Built in the aftermath of the American Revolution, Fort St. joseph played an important role in the defence of Canada. And yet, when the war ended, the fort was abandoned, and almost forgotten. However, there were those who could not forget the heroics of 1812. They sought to restore the memory of the fort that was part of one of the defining moments in Canadian history. Determined individuals campaigned for government assistance and public support. Their efforts have paid off: since the 1960s, St. Joseph Island and the site of the fort have been revived as tourist destinations, and there are high hopes for an even greater tribute to the legacy of the fort and its soldiers.

Book A Bloodless Victory

  • Author : Joseph F. Stoltz
  • Publisher : JHU Press

Download or read book A Bloodless Victory written by Joseph F. Stoltz and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of military historiography examines the changing narrative of the Battle of New Orleans through two centuries of commemoration. Once celebrated on par with the Fourth of July, the anniversary of the Battle of New Orleans is no longer a day of reverence for most Americans. The United States’ stunning defeat of the British army on January 8th, 1815, gave rise to the presidency of Andrew Jackson, the Democratic Party, and the legend of Jean Laffite. Yet the battle has not been a national holiday since 1861. Joseph F. Stoltz III explores how generations of Americans have consciously revised, reinterpreted, and reexamined the memory of the conflict to fit the cultural and social needs of their time. Combining archival research with deep analyses of music, literature, theater, and film across two centuries of American popular culture, Stoltz highlights the myriad ways in which politicians, artists, academics, and ordinary people have rewritten the battle’s history. From Andrew Jackson’s presidential campaign to the occupation of New Orleans by the Union Army to the Jim Crow era, the continuing reinterpretations of the battle alienated whole segments of the American population from its memorialization. Thus, a close look at the Battle of New Orleans offers an opportunity to explore not just how events are collectively remembered across generations but also how a society discards memorialization that is no longer necessary or palatable.

Book Mount Saint Joseph Academy

Download or read book Mount Saint Joseph Academy written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 4, 1858, the Sisters of Saint Joseph founded Mount Saint Joseph Academy for Young Ladies on the grounds of what is now Chestnut Hill College. The Mount, as it is fondly known by generations of graduates, is the oldest continuously operating Catholic girls' school in the Philadelphia area. Rooted in the sisters' maxim "on the education of women largely depends the future of society," the school continues to grow while maintaining its core Catholic mission. Mount Saint Joseph Academy follows the school from its boarding-school days at the Monticello mansion in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, to its modern 78-acre campus in Flourtown, Montgomery County, where girls in grades 9 through 12 receive a private, college-preparatory education in the tradition of excellence. On the momentous occasion of the school's 150th anniversary, Mount Saint Joseph Academy is a tribute to the Mount's rich history of service, academics, athletics, and the arts.

Book Indian Spectacle

  • Author : Jennifer Guiliano
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2015-04-02
  • ISBN : 0813565561
  • Pages : 195 pages

Download or read book Indian Spectacle written by Jennifer Guiliano and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid controversies surrounding the team mascot and brand of the Washington Redskins in the National Football League and the use of mascots by K–12 schools, Americans demonstrate an expanding sensitivity to the pejorative use of references to Native Americans by sports organizations at all levels. In Indian Spectacle, Jennifer Guiliano exposes the anxiety of American middle-class masculinity in relation to the growing commercialization of collegiate sports and the indiscriminate use of Indian identity as mascots. Indian Spectacle explores the ways in which white, middle-class Americans have consumed narratives of masculinity, race, and collegiate athletics through the lens of Indian-themed athletic identities, mascots, and music. Drawing on a cross-section of American institutions of higher education, Guiliano investigates the role of sports mascots in the big business of twentieth-century American college football in order to connect mascotry to expressions of community identity, individual belonging, stereotyped imagery, and cultural hegemony. Against a backdrop of the current level of the commercialization of collegiate sports—where the collective revenue of the fifteen highest grossing teams in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has well surpassed one billion dollars—Guiliano recounts the history of the creation and spread of mascots and university identities as something bound up in the spectacle of halftime performance, the growth of collegiate competition, the influence of mass media, and how athletes, coaches, band members, spectators, university alumni, faculty, and administrators, artists, writers, and members of local communities all have contributed to the dissemination of ideas of Indianness that is rarely rooted in native people’s actual lives.
