Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few infantry regiments in the Civil War compiled a more distinguished record than the Fifth Missouri. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.

Book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War

Download or read book The 11th Missouri Volunteer Infantry in the Civil War written by Dennis W. Belcher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-09-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th Missouri Infantry distinguished itself as just the type of regiment the Union needed in the Civil War. Hard as nails and loyal to a fault, the men of the "Eagle Brigade" would follow their commanders "into hell if they ordered." They battled two Confederate regiments at Iuka, turned the tide at Battery Robinett at Corinth, assaulted the impossible Stockade Redan at Vicksburg as whole ranks of soldiers were cut down, and broke Hood's line at Nashville. Although the 11th Missouri ranks among the 300 top regiments of the Civil War, little of its history has been formally recorded. This study provides a detailed account of the regiment's four-and-a-half years of outstanding service and a roster.

Book Executing Daniel Bright

Download or read book Executing Daniel Bright written by Barton A. Myers and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Bright was executed in 1863 for his involvement in an irregular resistance to Union army incursions along the coast of North Carolina. Executing Daniel Bright uses life and death to exemplify a larger pattern of retaliatory executions and public murders meant to enforce a message of political loyalty and military conduct on the Confederate home front; and to examine the wider experience of guerrilla conflict on the North Carolina coast. The study concludes that guerrilla violence like Bright's hanging was not isolated to the highlands or piedmont region of the North Carolina home front but occurred throughout the state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 150 years after its end, we still struggle to understand the full extent of the human toll of the Civil War and the psychological crisis it created. In Aberration of Mind, Diane Miller Sommerville offers the first book-length treatment of suicide in the South during the Civil War era, giving us insight into both white and black communities, Confederate soldiers and their families, as well as the enslaved and newly freed. With a thorough examination of the dynamics of both racial and gendered dimensions of psychological distress, Sommerville reveals how the suffering experienced by Southerners living in a war zone generated trauma that, in extreme cases, led some Southerners to contemplate or act on suicidal thoughts. Sommerville recovers previously hidden stories of individuals exhibiting suicidal activity or aberrant psychological behavior she links to the war and its aftermath. This work adds crucial nuance to our understanding of how personal suffering shaped the way southerners viewed themselves in the Civil War era and underscores the full human costs of war.
