Book God at Work

Download or read book God at Work written by R. Kevin Mohr and published by CSS Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectionary Gospel readings for the first third of the season after Pentecost (Pentecost Sunday through Proper 12-Cycle A) launch us immediately into a series of teachings by Jesus, many in the form of a parable, about what it means to follow him in the Kingdom of God. Only three of the eight readings, for example, narrate distinct events in the ministry of Jesus. Given the heavy pedagogic emphasis in the other eight lections, it would be easy to treat discipleship as a thing or an object to be studied at a safe, intellectual distance. Nothing could be further from what author Kevin Mohr believes the Holy Spirit wants us to experience as we grapple with these readings. The parables and teachings of Jesus in Matthew, chapters seven through thirteen, illustrate what began at Pentecost: God is at work in the world through those who believe in Jesus Christ. Through these musings the reader might be able to catch enough of a glimpse of God at work to be caught up again into what God is doing in Christ Jesus through his church. The sermons presented in God At Work are generally more topical or thematic than expository. All of them have been edited from their original context of sermons shared with the people of English Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bluffton, Ohio. But the liveliness and spirit of these messages have not been lost in the editing. "It has been my great privilege and joy to wrestle with God's Word with that great community of believers in Bluffton; I have been blessed to see God at work among them and through them. I am thankful to God for their role in these sermons..." -Author, R. Kevin Mohr Some sermon titles included: The Kiss of Life (John 20:19-23) Worship, Doubt, & the Trinity (Matthew 28:16-20) A Storm-Proof Faith (Matthew 7:21-29) Long-Shots & Lost-Causes (Matthew 9:9-13, 18-26) Good For What Ails Us (Matthew 9:35--10:8) R. Kevin Mohr is pastor of English Lutheran Church in Bluffton, Ohio. Immediately after graduating from seminary, Mohr and his wife were missionaries for seventeen years in Madagascar. For the next eight years he taught at and was president of the regional seminary of the Malagasy Lutheran Church and was then chairperson of the ELCA missionaries in Madagascar. Pastor Mohr attended Heidelberg University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary for his formal education. Mohr is married to Deborah and together they have two grown children.

Download or read book Lift Up Your Hearts written by James A. Wallace and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of homilies represents the efforts of three preachers to interpret the lives of a community of faith and lead them deeper into the liturgy and life. It grows out of a vision of the homily as "a scriptural interpretation of human existence which enables a community to recognize God's active presence, to respond to that presence in faith through liturgical word and gesture, and, beyond the liturgical assembly, through a life lived in conformity with the Gospel." The first intent of Lift Up Your Hearts is to focus on homilies as acts of interpretation, in which: "the preacher does not so much attempt to explain the Scriptures as to interpret the human situation through the Scriptures." This book casts the homilist not so much as a teacher but as a "mediator of meaning"--speaking words that help the community to know itself and to act as the People of God, the Body of Christ, and the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. In addition, these homilies are intended to move the parishioners toward the act of Eucharist, to giving praise and thanks here and now, and then beyond the Church doors, out into the world to take part in the mission of the Church. Pastors, priests, deacons, and anyone who preaches will find this collection of source material to be particularly useful in crafting homilies that are grounded in Holy Scripture and yet relevant and meaningful in today's world. Also, it is written for the churchgoer in search of a helpful reflection on the Sunday readings with the intent of connecting the biblical texts with life. +

Book excerpt: "The Second Vatican Council called the Bible 'the food of the soul.' Yet, for many Catholics, their engagement with Scripture is often limited to what they hear at Mass--and the dull, safe, predictable homilies that obscure rather than break open up the Word of God. In Food for the Soul, a riveting three-part series, celebrated philosopher Peter Kreeft invites the faithful—clergy and laity alike—to a heart-to-heart relationship with Christ the Word through the Word of the Scriptures." --

Book The Lectionary Commentary Theological Exegesis for Sunday s Texts The First Readings

Download or read book The Lectionary Commentary Theological Exegesis for Sunday s Texts The First Readings written by Roger E. Van Harn and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005-09-09 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preaching pastors, ministers, and priests know how quickly Sundays come and go. The Lectionary Commentary will not slow the pace of the weekly calendar, but it will help assure that sermon preparation begins with a solid engagement with Scripture. Designed to "jump start" the difficult task of sermon preparation, this indispensable three-volume work gathers exegetical essays on biblical texts from the Revised Common Lectionary. Covering every Sunday of the three-year liturgical cycle, as well as Christmas Day, Epiphany, and Ascension Day, the readings are arranged in canonical order so as to be of use to all preachers. Seventy-eight pastors, priests, and teachers from a variety of Christian traditions have contributed their insights to The Lectionary Commentary. Designed to answer the question What does the preacher need to know about this text in order to preach a faithful sermon from it?, each of their essays closely considers its specific biblical text, all the while remaining alert to the contemporary context in which the sermon will be spoken and heard. The result is an invaluable resource that will aid in the difficult task of facilitating a meaningful encounter between Holy Scripture and our modern world. This volume, The First Readings: Old Testament and Acts, provides exegetical commentary on the lectionary readings from Genesis to Malachi, and from the first seventeen chapters of Acts. Also unique to this volume is an excellent essay by Hughes Oliphant Old on preaching as worship. Consulting Editors: Richard A. Burridge Thomas W. Gillespie Colin E. Gunton Robert W. Jenson James F. Kay Hughes Oliphant Old Fleming Rutledge Marguerite Shuster
