Book The Annotated Luther Volume 1

Download or read book The Annotated Luther Volume 1 written by Timothy J. Wengert and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of The Annotated Luther series contains writings that defined the roots of reform set in motion by Martin Luther, beginning with the Ninety-Five Theses (1517) through The Freedom of a Christian (1520). Included are treatises, letters, and sermons written from 1517 to 1520, which set the framework for key themes in all of Luthers later works. Also included are documents that reveal Luthers earliest confrontations with Rome and his defense of views and perspectives that led to his excommunication by Leo X in 1520. These documents display a Luther grounded in late medieval theology and its peculiar issues, trained in the latest humanist methods of the Renaissance, and, most especially, showing sensitivity toward the pastoral consequences of theological positions and church practice.

Not illustrated. 1892. Excerpt: ... SERMON XII. " Give us this day our daily bread."--St Matt. vi. II. It is God's bread, then, that we ask for, i.e., bread that comes to us in God's way; and though we find it hard to ask for it, because it comes so much as a matter of course, we have always need to ask that it may come in God's way. And the very attitude of asking, the very expression that we use, " Give," tells us of God as the Giver and not the Exactor, and so colours all our religion. Thus far we have come. We pass on to-day to that little word " us," to which we so often give but little attention, but which implies so much. The moment we emphasize it, we see that it means very much more perhaps than we have ever thought of before. It implies a wish that others should receive all that we ask for ourselves. It implies a disposition to share with them in some sense what we have. So it seems to have struck those who first said it, that little band who were so much "of one heart and of one soul," that no one said, " ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common." They F. D. Maurice on "The Lord's Prayer." understood it as a petition to the same Father Who had given His Son and His Spirit to all, that He would give to all the necessities of life; they understood it to imply, that it was the privilege of those who had much to give to those who had little; they thought of the prayer as a reality, not as though it were, "keep me in comfort and save others from starvation," but " give to us all what we need." And so they translated quite sincerely their prayer into the forming of a common stock, they even sold their houses and lands, though they might have kept them by the rules of the Church; the sense of their common heritage so possessed them, that they c...

Book A History of Preaching Volume 1

Download or read book A History of Preaching Volume 1 written by Rev. O.C. Edwards JR. and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Preaching brings together narrative history and primary sources to provide the most comprehensive guide available to the story of the church's ministry of proclamation. Bringing together an impressive array of familiar and lesser-known figures, Edwards paints a detailed, compelling picture of what it has meant to preach the gospel. Pastors, scholars, and students of homiletics will find here many opportunities to enrich their understanding and practice of preaching. Volume 1 contains Edwards's magisterial retelling of the story of Christian preaching's development from its Hellenistic and Jewish roots in the New Testament, through the late-twentieth century's discontent with outdated forms and emphasis on new modes of preaching such as narrative. Along the way the author introduces us to the complexities and contributions of preachers, both with whom we are already acquainted, and to whom we will be introduced here for the first time. Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine, Bernard, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, Rauschenbusch, Barth; all of their distinctive contributions receive careful attention. Yet lesser-known figures and developments also appear, from the ninth-century reform of preaching championed by Hrabanus Maurus, to the reference books developed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by the mendicant orders to assist their members' preaching, to Howell Harris and Daniel Rowlands, preachers of the eighteenth-century Welsh revival, to Helen Kenyon, speaking as a layperson at the 1950 Yale Beecher lectures about the view of preaching from the pew. Volume 2, available separately as 9781501833786, contains primary source material on preaching drawn from the entire scope of the church's twenty centuries. The author has written an introduction to each selection, placing it in its historical context and pointing to its particular contribution. Each chapter in Volume 2 is geared to its companion chapter in Volume 1's narrative history. Ecumenical in scope, fair-minded in presentation, appreciative of the contributions that all the branches of the church have made to the story of what it means to develop, deliver, and listen to a sermon, A History of Preaching will be the definitive resource for anyone who wishes to preach or to understand preaching's role in living out the gospel. "...'This work is expected to be the standard text on preaching for the next 30 years,' says Ann K. Riggs, who staffs the NCC's Faith and Order Commission. Author Edwards, former professor of preaching at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, is co-moderator of the commission, which studies church-uniting and church-dividing issues. 'A History of Preaching is ecumenical in scope and will be relevant in all our churches; we all participate in this field,' says Riggs...." from EcuLink, Number 65, Winter 2004-2005 published by the National Council of Churches

Book A Documentary History of Lutheranism Volumes 1 and 2

Download or read book A Documentary History of Lutheranism Volumes 1 and 2 written by Mark A. Granquist and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 815 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique collection of excerpts from Lutheran historical documents--many translated here for the first time--presents readers with a full picture of how the Lutheran movement developed in its thought and practice. Covering not only theology but also church life, popular piety, and influential historical events, the primary documents include theological treatises, confessional statements, liturgical texts, devotional writings, hymns, letters and diaries, satirical polemics, political documents, woodcuts, and pamphlet literature. This first volume covers the chronological period from Luther‘s first calls for reform to the development of Lutheran Orthodoxy and Pietism during the seventeenth century. The judiciously selected and carefully translated texts as well as the contextualizing information provided in each chapter‘s introductory essay acquaint readers with the turbulence and fervor of this revolutionary Christian movement, its struggles for survival and consolidation, and its further evolution up to the dawn of the Enlightenment.
