Book Sermons from the Latino a Pulpit

Download or read book Sermons from the Latino a Pulpit written by Elieser Valentin and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-06-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Latino/a community continues to grow at a faster pace than any other racial or ethnic group in the country. In part because of this growth, Latino/as have begun to be recognized as bona fide contributors to American society, whether through sports, music, literary work, theology, or ministry. Largely missing from this, however, has been attention to the creative and indeed prophetic expression coming from the Latino/a pulpit--that is, the sermons being developed and preached from the Latino/a churches. This books fills that void. Eli Valentin has gathered some of the top US Latino/a theologians and religious practitioners to contribute actual sermons that have been constructed out of the rough and tumble of the Latino/a reality. The sermons in this book approach nitty-gritty issues that directly impact Latinos/as in the United States. What we find as a result is a message of hope that continues to emanate from the Latino/a pulpit, a hope placed in a God who promises a restored cosmos.

Book Engaging Latino a x Theologies

Download or read book Engaging Latino a x Theologies written by Sharon E. Heaney and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sharon E. Heaney describes how the life-giving interruption of Latin American poets, novelists, artists, and theologians changed her life in a conflict-ridden Northern Ireland. An outsider, in this study she provides an engagement with a stream of theology in the United States she takes to be exemplary. Latino/a/x theology is teología en conjunto (collaborative theology). It models ways to examine complicated and contested histories and identities, and it resists dominant assumptions about theological points of departure in favor of also valuing the everyday as locus theologicus. Identifying major themes and foundational thinkers, alongside more recent developments, Heaney offers an overview and invites readers to further reading, study, and formation. Modelling what it esteems, each chapter closes in conversation with a Latino/a/x leader in the church. The conclusion is written by practical theologian, Altagracia Pérez-Bullard. She affirms, this “is not just an intellectual exercise, . . . this engagement . . . is the practice of our lives as we journey with God and as we journey with one another. . . . It is an exciting journey. It changes us.”

Download or read book The Liberating Pulpit written by Justo L. Gonzalez and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-01-27 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catherine and Justo Gonzalez provide a valuable resource for preaching and biblical interpretation. An account of liberation theology's impact on the task of preaching is offered by two historians of doctrine who are intimately aware of the need to be open to marginalized perspectives in the church. Early Christian preachers had much to say on issues such as the origins and proper use of wealth, the rights and duties of the poor and rich, and the nature of ownership. The Gonzalezes recapture this early Christian spirit offering concrete ways that the interpretation of specific biblical texts may be enriched or corrected in order to speak directly to the whole life of the whole church. Often used as a text in preaching courses, The Liberating Pulpit helps to clarify and to bridge the gap between those whose preaching and hermeneutics tend to be more traditional and the various minorities who tend to read Scripture in a different way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year of the COVID pandemic was a time like no other in modern history. A historical pandemic, a racial reckoning, a tense and bitterly divided political election, an insurrection at the capital, and the Texas record freeze created a year that will be long remembered. Preachers were charged with making some sense of what was happening and at the same time giving hope that the community would make it through this time together. Through a year of homilies based on the Catholic readings of Sundays and Feast days, Father David Garcia connects the stories of this historic year to the light of Scripture. The homilies weave human experiences with Hispanic culture and traditions as well as moral lessons and Catholic spirituality. Pandemic Preaching helps inspire all who have been through this difficult time with powerful stories and sound theological reflection. At the same time these writings challenge us to learn the lessons of this unique and difficult year for ourselves.

Download or read book Preaching the Word written by Karoline M. Lewis and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of what to do with the biblical text in the sermon is perennial. Biblical scholarship constantly evolves and grows, making it hard even for biblical scholars themselves to apply the latest insights in their preaching. The average pastor doesn’t have time to keep up with the changes in biblical studies and, as a result, often defaults to interpretive methods learned in (increasingly distant) seminary years. Preaching the Word addresses those needs by surveying recent developments in biblical studies with an eye to applying them in preaching the Gospel of John. Noted New Testament Scholar and homiletician Karoline Lewis lays out these recent interpretive tools and methods, demonstrating their application to preaching using specific passages in the Fourth Gospel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pulpit and Rostrum: Sermons, Orations, Popular Lectures, &C Law, some of them as novel as they were important, which had reference to the entrance or the attempted entrance of so many new states into the family of nations; in Europe - Greece, Bel gium, Hungary; on this continent, twelve or fourteen new repub lics, great and small, bursting from the ruins of the Spanish colonial em pire - like a group of asteroids from the wreck of an exploded planet; the invitation of the infant American Re ublica to meet them in Congress at Panama; our commercial r ationa with the British Colonies in the West Indies and on this con tinent; demands of several European states for spoliations on our commerce durin the wars of the French Revolution; our secular controversy wi England relative to the boundary of the United States on the N orth-eastern and Pacific frontiers; our relations with Mexico, previous to the war; the immunity of the American flag upon the common jurisdiction of the ocean; and more im portant than all other questions, foreign or domestic, in its influence upon the general politics of the country, the great sectional controversy - not then first commenced, but greatly in creased in warmth and urgency, which connected itself with the organization of the newly acquired Mexican territories. Such were the chief questions on which it was Mr. Webster's duty to form Opinions; as an influenti lmember of Congress and a political leader to speak and to vote; a member of the Execu tive Government to exercise a powerful, over some of them, a de oisive control. Besides these there was another class of questions of great public importance, which came up for adjudication in the Courts of the United States, which he was called professionally to discuss. Many of the questions of each class now referred to di vided and still divide opinion; excited and still excite the feelings of individuals, of parties, of sections of the country. There are some of them, which, in the course of a long life, under changing circumstances, are likely to be differently viewed at different peri ods by the same individual. I am not here today to rake off the warm ashes from the embers of controversies which have 8 nt their fury and are dying away, or to fan the fires of those w ich still burn. But no one, I think, whether he agreed with Mr. Web ster or differed from him as to any of these questions, will deny that he treated them each and all, as they came up in the Senate, in the Courts, or in negotiations with Foreign powers, in a broad, statesmanlike, and masterly way. There were few who would not confess, when they agreed with him, that he had expressed their Opinions better than they could do it themselves; few, when they differed from him, who would not admit that he had maintained his own views manfully, powerfully, and liberally.
