Book excerpt: Five Sermons on the Blessed Virgin Mary by Matthew of Aquasparta, OFM Volume X of a 12 Volume set. Fr. Campion Murray, OFM, Lector Emeritus of the Yarra Theological Union and Fellow of the Melbourne College of Divinity, lives at St. Paschal's College, a Franciscan Friary in Box Hill, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. Part of the college forms the campus of YTU where Campion was a faculty member from its inception and twice elected President of the Theological Union. His two terms of office helped consolidate YTU and its ecumenical openness. Fr. Campion made his final profession in the Province of the Holy Spirit, Australia in 1948 and was ordained priest in July 1951. After studies at the Athenaeum Antonianum, Rome in the field of systematic theology, he has for the many years following, been an inspiring teacher and shepherd to many students, lecturing especially in the field of Wisdom Literature. Translations of early Franciscan works have been for many years a vital interest in his life. This present series, Early Franciscan Ascetical Writings, represents only a small part of the body of works that this great scholar has translated, among them St. Bonaventure's Commentary on Ecclesiastes, Franciscan Institute, Saint Bonaventure, NY, 2005.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Would you like to learn to pray like a medieval Christian? In Mary and the Art of Prayer, Rachel Fulton Brown traces the history of the medieval practice of praising Mary through the complex of prayers known as the Hours of the Virgin. More than just a work of comprehensive historical scholarship, the book asks readers to immerse themselves in the experience of believing in and praying to Mary. Mary and the Art of Prayer crosses the boundaries that modern scholars typically place between observation and experience, between the world of provable facts and the world of imagination, suggesting what it would have been like for medieval Christians to encounter Mary in prayer. Mary and the Art of Prayer opens with a history of the devotion of the Hours or “Little Office” of the Virgin. It then guides readers in the practice of saying this Office, including its invitatory (Ave Maria), antiphons, psalms, lessons, and prayers. The book works on several levels at once. It provides a new methodology for thinking about devotion and prayer; a new appreciation of the scope of and audience for the Hours of the Virgin; a new understanding of how Mary functions theologically and devotionally; and a new reading of sources not previously taken into account. A courageous and moving work, it will transform our ideas of what scholarship is and what it can accomplish.

Book The Talents of Jacopo da Varagine

Download or read book The Talents of Jacopo da Varagine written by Steven A. Epstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-14 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacopo da Varagine (c. 1228–1298) is remembered today primarily for his immensely popular work The Golden Legend, a massive collection of stories about the saints. Compiled over the years 1260–67, The Golden Legend quickly eclipsed earlier collections of saints’ lives. One indication of its popularity is the fact that so many manuscript copies of the work have survived—more than one thousand according to some estimates. Despite the enduring influence of The Golden Legend, Jacopo remains an elusive figure because he left behind so little information about himself. In The Talents of Jacopo da Varagine, Steven A. Epstein sets out to remedy this situation through a careful study of all Jacopo’s works, including many hundreds of sermons and his innovative chronicle of Genoese history. In Epstein’s sure hands, Jacopo emerges as one of the most active and talented minds of his day. Indeed, Epstein argues that one needs to read all of Jacopo’s books, in a Genoese context, in order to understand the original scope of his thinking, which greatly influenced the ways generations of people across Europe experienced their Christianity. The rich sources for Jacopo’s sermons, saints’ lives, and history illuminate the traditions that inspired him and shaped his imaginative and artistic powers. Jacopo was also one of the inventors of social history, and his writings reveal complex and new perspectives on family life as well as the histories of gay people, slaves, Jews, and the medieval economy. Filled with impressive insights into the intellectual life of the thirteenth century, The Talents of Jacopo da Varagine will be of interest to a wide range of medieval scholars and students of religious history, church history, and hagiography as well as intellectual history and Italian history.

Book Preaching and New Worlds

Download or read book Preaching and New Worlds written by Timothy Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays examines the polyvalent concept of "New Worlds" in the context of medieval and early modern sermon studies. While the terms "Old World" and "New World" are commonplace in studies of Europe and the Americas, this volume explores how preaching in the Atlantic world and beyond creatively engaged audiences in addressing new cultural and religious perspectives regardless of their geographical location and time period. The identification of the "other" in sermons is already an implicit recognition of a novel world, which could be equally enticing and intimidating. The scholars represented in this volume examine a wide panorama of medieval and early modern efforts as they identify how sermons, which often served as a highly effective media of mass communication, reflect shifting identities, sometimes contested and sometimes embraced, within long-standing traditional constructs. Particular themes include apocalypticism, art and mission, cultural interaction, multilingualism, forms of religious life, and theological innovation.
