Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermon Preached at the Visitation of the Honourable and Right Reverend Richard, Lord Bishop of Durham: Held in the Parish Church of St. Mary Le Bow in Durham, on Thursday, July 27, 1758 The kingdom of God, or the kingdom of Heaven, according to its most usual and almost constant acceptation throughout the several histories of the Evangelists, signifies the state of the gospel, or the church of Christ upon earth, first begun and established by the preaching of our blessed Saviour and his apostles. When our Saviour commands his disciples to pray, that this kingdom may come, his meaning is, that we should make it a constant and perpetual subject of our petitions to Almighty God, that this gospel-state, or church of Christ, so begun and established upon earth, may, through his grace, be still advanced and carried on, till at length it arrive at that maturity and completion, that universality, unity, and spiritual perfection, which he hath decreed and promised that it shall one time attain. Book The Poetics of Prophecy

Download or read book The Poetics of Prophecy written by Yosefa Raz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the mid-1700s, poets and scholars have been deeply entangled in the project of reinventing prophecy. Moving between literary and biblical studies, this book reveals how Romantic poetry is linked to modern biblical scholarship's development. On the one hand, scholars, intellectuals, and artists discovered models of strong prophecy in biblical texts, shoring up aesthetic and nationalist ideals, while on the other, poets drew upon a counter-tradition of destabilizing, indeterminate, weak prophetic power. Yosefa Raz considers British and German Romanticism alongside their margins, incorporating Hebrew literature written at the turn of the twentieth century in the Russia Empire. Ultimately she explains the weakness of modern poet-prophets not only as a crisis of secularism but also, strikingly, as part of the instability of the biblical text itself. Download or read book Anglican Confirmation written by Phillip Tovey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confirmation was an important part of the life of the eighteenth-century church which consumed a significant part of the time of bishops, of clergy in their preparation of candidates, and of the candidates themselves in terms of a transition in their Christian life. Yet it has been almost entirely overlooked by scholars. This book aims to fill this void in our understanding, and offers an important contribution and correction of our understanding of the life of the church during the long eighteenth century in both Britain and North America. Tovey addresses two important historical debates: the 'pessimist/optimist' debate on the character and condition of the Church of England in the eighteenth century; and the debate on the 're-enchantment' of the eighteenth century which challenges the secular nature of society in the age of the Enlightenment. Drawing on new developments of the study of visitation returns and episcopal life and on primary research in historical records, Anglican Confirmation goes behind the traditional Tractarian interpretations to uncover the understanding and confidence of the eighteenth-century church in the rite of confirmation. The book will be of interest to eighteenth-century church historians, theologians and liturgists alike.
