Download or read book Serbia and the Church of England written by Mark D. Chapman and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-17 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first comprehensive account of the changing ecumenical relationships between Britain and Serbia. While the impetus for the collection is the commemoration of the Serbian seminarians who settled in and around Oxford towards the end of the First World War, the scope is much broader, including detailed accounts of the relationships between the Church of England and Serbia and its Orthodox Church from the middle of the nineteenth century until World War II. It includes studies of leading thinkers from the period, especially the charismatic Nikolaj Velimirović. The contributors use many unpublished resources that reveal the centrality of the churches in promoting the Serbian cause through the course of the First World War and in its aftermath.

Download or read book Theology at War and Peace written by Mark D. Chapman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first detailed discussion of the impact of the First World War on English theology. Assessing the close relationships between English and German theologians before the First World War, Chapman then explores developments throughout the war. A series of case studies make use of a large amount of unpublished material, showing how some theologians sought to maintain relationships with their German colleagues, while others, especially from a more Anglo-Catholic perspective, used the war as an opportunity to distance themselves from the liberal theology which was beginning to dominate the universities before the war. The increasing animosity between Britain and Germany meant that relations were never healed. English theology became increasingly insular, dividing between a more home-grown variety of liberalism and an ascendant Anglo-Catholicism. Consequently, this book offers useful insights into the development of theology in the twentieth century and will be of keen interest to scholars and students of the history of theology.

Download or read book Balkan Contextual Theology written by Stipe Odak and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-15 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opens a new research field in Balkan contextual theology. By embracing culturally rich traditions of the Western Balkans as its starting point, it explores their existential and theological bearings. Placed at the crossroads of civilisations and religions, this region has witnessed some of the worst atrocities of the 20th century. At the same time, it has produced unique textures of inter-cultural life. The volume addresses some of the most poignant phenomena endemic to the region, such as sevdalinka music, intimate forms of neighborhood, archetypes of ‘sacred warriors,’ the experience of democratic jet lag, collective melancholy, and intergenerational trauma. As the first book of this nature, it aims to encourage further development of contextual theological thinking in the region and promote its international reception.

Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive exposition of the interaction of a national (the Serbian people) and a religiou (the Orthodox Christian faith) content, in the formation of a distinctive national identity and a mode of being. Its interdisciplinary approach, drawing on sociology, social anthropology, theology, political theory, Balkan historiography, and Serbian folklore, is deployed to provide a powerful and original analysis of how Serbian Orthodoxy has resulted in the sacralisation of the Serbian nation by framing the parameters of its existence. Addresses the following questions: what 'makes' a Serb? Are meaningful assumptions possible by introducing Serbian Orthodoxy as the primal point of reference? Why does religion appear to have an especially strong appeal?

Download or read book Anglicanism and Orthodoxy written by Peter M. Doll and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Springing out of the Anglican Patristic revival in the seventeenth century, this College for Greek Orthodox students in Oxford enjoyed only a brief existence (1699-1705), but its history reflects a vigorous strain of ecumenical activity and theological conviction continuing to the present day. This volume collects the papers from the conference held in 2001 at Worcester College, Oxford, celebrating the three hundredth anniversary of the Greek College. The engagement between Anglicanism and Orthodoxy reveals not only the common foundations in Scripture and the Fathers on which they stand but also the divergent expressions of that shared tradition, shaped as each church has been by the contingencies of history. Relations between Anglicans and Orthodox did not stop at discussion on Biblical and Patristic theology. The papers in this collection encompass high and low politics, educational theory and practice, architecture, liturgy, ecumenism, as well as cultural imperialism and protectionism. Also included in this collection are documents related to the history of the College, among them translations of original publications previously available only in Greek. Here is to be found hope that in a better understanding of their own as well as one another's traditions, Anglicans and Orthodox may with greater confidence continue to work together towards rediscovering the unity of the Church.
