Book Serapion and Other Stories

Download or read book Serapion and Other Stories written by Francis Stevens and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-05-28 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serapion and Other Stories (1920) is a collection of stories by Francis Stevens. Using her well-known pseudonym, Gertrude Barrows Bennett published some of the twentieth century’s greatest science fiction stories and novels. “Serapion” been recognized as a powerful tale of dark fantasy for investigation of demonic possession and the occult, and remains central to Stevens’ reputation as a pioneering author of fantasy and science fiction. “‘Get! Get out!’ adjured that brutally vulgar voice. Then it changed to a whining, female treble: ‘You are young, Clayton Barbour; young and soft to the soft, cruel hand that would mold you. You are easy to mold as clay-clay-Clayton-clay! Evil hangs over you--black evil! Flee from the damned Clayton Barbour. Go home--you!’” Against his better judgment, Clay Barbour ignores the advice of his friend Nils Berquist and attends a séance at the home of well-known spiritualists James and Alicia Moore. In the dim, candlelit room, a “fifth presence” named Serapion reveals himself to Barbour, claiming to offer happiness and success to the young man. Terrified at first, Barbour soon welcomes Serapion into his life, unwittingly opening the door to disaster for himself and his loved ones. Presented alongside some of Stevens’ lesser known tales of science fiction and occult inquiry, “Serapion” is a masterpiece of dark fantasy and a cautionary tale that continues to haunt a century after it appeared in print. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Francis Stevens’ Serapion and Other Stories is a classic work of American science fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Book Dinner with Stalin and Other Stories

Download or read book Dinner with Stalin and Other Stories written by David Shrayer-Petrov and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These fourteen stories by the acclaimed master of Jewish-Russian fiction are set in the former USSR, Western Europe, and America. Dinner with Stalin features Soviet Jews grappling with issues of identity, acculturation, and assimilation. Shrayer-Petrov explores aspects of antisemitism and persecution, problems of mixed marriages, dilemmas of conversion, and the survival of Jewish memory. Both an author and a physician, Shrayer-Petrov examines his subjects through the double lenses of medicine and literature. He writes about Russian Jews who, having suffered in the former Soviet Union, continue to cultivate their sense of cultural Russianness, even as they—and especially their children—assimilate and increasingly resemble American Jews. Shrayer-Petrov’s stories also bear witness to the ways Jewish immigrants from the former USSR interact with Americans of other identities and creeds, notably with Catholics and Moslems. Not only lovers of Jewish and Russian writing but all discriminating readers will delight in Dinner with Stalin and Other Stories.

This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Serapion Brethren, Vol. 1 Norwithsrmm the popularity which several of Hotf mann's tales have obtained in many different countries, we are not aware of any complete or accurate translation of his works. In England they have become known in a very partial form, chiefly by the appearance of a few isolated tales in association with those of other writers, as in the 'specimens of German Romance, ' or in Gillies' 'german Stories, ' which were published about 1830. Others are familiar only through' the medium of a trans lation from a previous French version, as is the case with the well-known 'nutcracker, ' - and in this process of double dilution the Author's name has sometimes disap peered altogether. Book Red Cavalry and Other Stories

Download or read book Red Cavalry and Other Stories written by Isaac Babel and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his life Isaac Babel was torn by opposing forces, by the desire both to remain faithful to his Jewish roots and yet to be free of them. This duality of vision infuses his work with a powerful energy from the earliest tales including 'Old Shloyme' and 'Childhood', which affirm his Russian-Jewish childhood, to the relatively non-Jewish world of his collection of stories entitled 'Red Cavalry'. Babel's masterpiece, 'Red Cavalry' is the most dramatic expression of his dualism and in his simultaneous acceptance and rejection of his heritage heralds the great American-Jewish writers from Henry Roth to Saul Bellow and Philip Roth.

Book The Golden Pot and Other Tales

Download or read book The Golden Pot and Other Tales written by E. T. A. Hoffmann and published by Oxford Paperbacks. This book was released on 2008-09-11 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hoffmann is among the greatest and most popular of the German Romantics. This selection, while stressing the variety of his work, puts in the foreground those tales in which the real and the supernatural are brought into contact and conflict. The humour of these tales is a result of the incongruity of supernatural beings at large in an ostentatiously everyday world. They include The Golden Pot, recognized as Hoffmann's masterpiece by himself and posterity; its spine-chilling companion tale, The Sandman, which Offenbach drew on for his opera Tales of Hoffmann, and which Freud examines in his essay `The Uncanny'; two longer and more elaborate fantasies, set respectively in Germany and Italy; and the late story, My Cousin's Corner Window, which shows the powers of the imagination being applied to everyday urban life, and marks a transition in European literature generally from Romanticism to Realism. Ritchie Robertson's detailed introduction places the stories in their intellectual and historical context and explores their compelling narrative complexities.

Book The Life of Serapion and Other Christian Sogdian Texts from the Manuscripts E25 and E26

Download or read book The Life of Serapion and Other Christian Sogdian Texts from the Manuscripts E25 and E26 written by Nicholas Sims-Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sogdian texts published in this volume are of interest and importance in various ways. The Life of Serapion is particularly significant from a linguistic point of view, being a close translation of a known Syriac text, so that its rare words and unusual grammatical forms can be interpreted with confidence. The Life of John of Dailam, on the other hand, differs substantially from the surviving Syriac versions and preserves details unrecorded elsewhere concerning the history of western Iran in the early Islamic period. A text on omens represents an extremely ancient, pre-Christian survival, with clear parallels not only in Syriac but even in Babylonian omen texts, while a refutation of Manichaeism sheds light on the attitude of the Christian community in the Turfan oasis towards their Manichaean neighbours. All these texts are provided with translation and detailed commentary, and the volume concludes with grammatical notes, complete glossary, bibliography, index of words discussed, and eleven plates. This work will be of interest to specialists in Iranian languages, mediaeval Iran and Central Asia, Syriac literature and the history of the Church of the East.
