Book excerpt: ‘’ The brain has a unique function’’. It was December the journey of icy morning peering slowly moving dusky lights from clouds. As I said “the brain has a unique function’’ my brain pressures me for mounting on the theme of Love this winter. Love; is one thing that inspired the greatest of poets and playwrights like Rumi, Pablo Neruda, John Keats, Emily Bronte, Shakespeare, Oscar Wilde, Robert Burns, etc. Their writing is the reflection of their composition of words and the content they offer to readers. Therefore I choose this theme as a capsule for my co-author; as we know love is a basic human need though it complicates emotion at the same time, but love is a hard to define emotion like the painting of Picasso a brilliant and wonderful art tell us one thing about love, as he quotes’’Love is the greatest refreshment in life” it is a feeling which all humankind experienced in life. I define love as a universal language that will never lose its significance or beauty. Love suits each and every person differently whether love is between lovers, friends, family, or nature it is an overwhelming emotion that can be experienced in many ways. The concept of love has a variety of feelings, emotions, and behaviours. It is a desire to love and care other in a hard wired and deep- hearted. Love is an unimaginable and also it can never be summarized by an action neither it can ever be expressed by words.

Book Transformations of Love

Book excerpt: The most controversial episode in the life of the seventeenth-century virtuoso and diarist John Evelyn has always been his passionate, complex friendship with the Restoration maid of honour Margaret Blagge, afterwards Mrs Godolphin. His 'Life of Mrs Godolphin', written after her early death in childbirth, exalted the friendship and represented her as effectively a saint. They saw their intense friendship as platonic spiritual mentoring. Yet it is sometimes argued that what took place between them was actually a kind of seduction on Evelyn's part; that far from trying to overcome her religious scruples about marriage to a young man she deeply loved, as he afterwards claimed, he secretly encouraged them in order to keep her in his power, and even falsified some documents to conceal this from her husband, whose patronage he sought. Was Evelyn in his way as much a sexual predator as the Restoration rakes he professed to despise, or does the episode provide a window on an unexplored aspect of early modern spirituality? Undoubtedly there was more to the friendship than Evelyn publicly admitted, but it remains a puzzle still to be interpreted. This new study is based on Evelyn's papers, now fully accessible for the first time, and on important and hitherto unknown correspondence between Margaret Blagge and her future husband. It situates the episode fully within the pre- and post-Reformation debates concerning marriage and friendship (the latter seen by some as 'more a sacrament' than marriage) and the long traditions of platonic love and intense friendships between men and women in religious contexts. Its diverse and vividly realized settings include the glamorous, disreputable public household of the Restoration court and the great gardens of the day, at once 'little worlds' in microcosm and recreations of paradise on earth.

Book Songbook

Download or read book Songbook written by Marisa Galvez and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How medieval songbooks were composed in collaboration with the community—and across languages and societies: “Eloquent…clearly argued.”—Times Literary Supplement Today we usually think of a book of poems as composed by a poet, rather than assembled or adapted by a network of poets and readers. But the earliest European vernacular poetries challenge these assumptions. Medieval songbooks remind us how lyric poetry was once communally produced and received—a collaboration of artists, performers, live audiences, and readers stretching across languages and societies. The only comparative study of its kind, Songbook treats what poetry was before the emergence of the modern category poetry: that is, how vernacular songbooks of the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries shaped our modern understanding of poetry by establishing expectations of what is a poem, what is a poet, and what is lyric poetry itself. Marisa Galvez analyzes the seminal songbooks representing the vernacular traditions of Occitan, Middle High German, and Castilian, and tracks the process by which the songbook emerged from the original performance contexts of oral publication, into a medium for preservation, and, finally, into an established literary object. Galvez reveals that songbooks—in ways that resonate with our modern practice of curated archives and playlists—contain lyric, music, images, and other nonlyric texts selected and ordered to reflect the local values and preferences of their readers. At a time when medievalists are reassessing the historical foundations of their field and especially the national literary canons established in the nineteenth century, a new examination of the songbook’s role in several vernacular traditions is more relevant than ever.
