Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foliar diseases of cereals caused by Septoria and Stagonospora are now among the most significant causes worldwide of losses in cereal production, particularly in wheat. Written by leading experts from Europe and the U.S., this volume is a comprehensive survey of Septoria pathogens, the diseases they cause, and strategies for their control. The book includes new research on control through fungicides and host resistance, utilizing novel chemistry, biotechnology, and methods for integrated disease management.

Book Instant Insights Septoria Tritici Blotch in Cereals

Download or read book Instant Insights Septoria Tritici Blotch in Cereals written by Stephen B. Goodwin and published by Burleigh Dodds Science: Instan. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection features four peer-reviewed reviews of septoria tritici blotch in cereals. The first chapter reviews the various methods for managing septoria tritici blotch (STB), from the the use of fungicides to marker-assisted breeding for increased resistance to STB. It also surveys research on the molecular basis of host-pathogen interactions in STB. The second chapter reviews current research on the main fungal diseases affecting barley, focussing on biotrophic foliar diseases, such as stem rust and powdery mildew, as well as necrotrophic diseases, such as septoria tritici blotch and fusarium head blight. The chapter also discusses the implications for achieving sustainable resistance to the pathogens responsible for these diseases. The third chapter addresses advances in understanding the epidemiology of septoria tritici blotch in the major cereal crops. The chapter also reviews the taxonomy and life cycle of Zymoseptoria tritici - the cause of septoria tritici blotch, as well as the economic impact of the pathogen. The final chapter reviews recent research on genetic resistance loci and breeding strategies based on both conventional and biotechnology-based breeding approaches to achieve durable resistance to septoria tritici blotch infection, whilst simultaneously minimising the risk of grain yield losses. What is an Instant Insight? An Instant Insight gives you immediate access to key research on a topic, allowing you to get right to the heart of a subject in an instant and empowering you to contribute to sustainable agriculture.

This is a description of one extreme, the other extreme is that the color of the infected areas remained green while the areas between the places of infection became yellow, light colored and finally died leaving the infected areas as "green islands" on the apparently dead leaf blade. These two extremes and all variations between were involved in the reproduction of the disease in the greenhouse. CAUSAL ORGANISM Taxonomy Septoria tritici Desm. was described on wheat in 1842 by Desmazieres (10) in France. He gave a complete description of the organism and the disease. The next year he (11) described S. graminum on dry leaves of grasses (infoliis siccis graminum). This he described as very similar to S. tritici. In fact he regards these two species so similar as to include them later (12) under the same specific name, reducing S. tritici to varietal rank under the specific name graminum. This usage was subsequently followed by others and still others (5, 14, 20), have applied the species name alone (S. graminum) to the fungus on wheat. The distinguishing features between these fungi are, according to Desmazieres, that in S. graminum the pycnidia (called perithecia by him) are smaller (invisible) and closer together than in S. tritici and the pycnospores are narrower and slightly enlarged at one end. He gave the length of the pycnospores of the two species as practically the same and did not give the exact width in either case. Passerini (24) gave the first complete measurements of S. graminum, stating that the pycnospores are from 1 to 1.25(a in diameter. Cavara (5) gave 1.5 to 2.0l as the width of the pycnospores of S. tritici. Heretofore the size of the pycnospore has been the only means of distinguishing between the...
