Book excerpt: Cell Separation: Methods and Selected Applications is a compendium of articles on the design and/or application of methods for the separation of cells. This volume presents contributions on relatively finite subjects on cell separation. It covers topics on cell separation such as methods for obtaining cells in suspension from animal tissues; some of the kinds of data that are helpful in the description of cell purifications; and separation of host cells infiltrating tumors and allografts by velocity sedimentation at unit gravity. The separation of different kinds of nucleated cells from blood by centrifugal elutriation; a new approach to the separation of cells at unit gravity; and the isolation and culture of homogeneous populations of glomerular cell types are elucidated as well. Experimental oncologists, hematologists, immunologists, cell biologists, endocrinologists, and others who are not already expert in the use of methods for cell separation will find the book highly useful.

Book Methods of Cell Separation

Download or read book Methods of Cell Separation written by P.T. Sharpe and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-05-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methods of Cell Separation brings to the attention of researchers at all levels the variety of methods available for separating viable populations of cells. Methods are grouped into 3 categories based on the criteria of separation, namely; size or density; non-specific surface properties; and specific surface properties. The principle of each method is described together with general and, where possible, specific protocols for conducting cell separation experiments.A central theme of the book is the separation of populations of blood lymphocytes which is used as an example for each method. Methods of Cell Separation is distinguished by three powerful assets: descriptions of the majority of cell separation methods currently being used; details of the experimental procedures involved in each method; and comparisons of the different methods for separating cell populations with particular reference to blood lymphocytes. An excellent addition to a distinguished series, and extremely useful as a laboratory manual.

Book Methods of Cell Separation

Download or read book Methods of Cell Separation written by Nicholas Catsimpoolas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presently, the need for methods involving separation, identification, and characterization of different kinds of cells is amply realized among immu nologists, hematologists, cell biologists, clinical pathologists, and cancer researchers. Unless cells exhibiting different functions and stages of differ entiation are separated from one another, it will be exceedingly difficult to study some of the molecular mechanisms involved in cell recognition, specialization, interactions, cytotoxicity, and transformation. Clinical diag nosis of diseased states and use of isolated cells for therapeutic (e. g. , immunotherapy) or survival (e. g. , transfusion) purposes are some of the pressing areas where immediate practical benefits can be obtained by applying cell separation techniques. However, the development of such useful methods is still in its infancy. A number of good techniques exist based either on the physical or biological properties of the cells, and these have produced some valuable results. Still others are to be discovered. Therefore, the purpose of this open-end treatise is to acquaint the reader with some of the basic principles, instrumentation, and procedures pres ently in practice at various laboratories around the world and to present some typical applications of each technique to particular biological prob lems. To this end, I was fortunate to obtain the contribution of certain leading scientists in the field of cell separation, people who in their pioneer ing work have struggled with the particular problems involved in separating living cells and in some way have won.

Each chapter offers direct practical guidance for the various techniques and describes the advantages and limitations of each. Reproducible protocols, hints and tips for success and troubleshooting suggestions are provided.

Book Separation of Cells and Subcellular Elements

Download or read book Separation of Cells and Subcellular Elements written by H. Peeters and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Separation of Cells and Subcellular Elements presents the chemical engineering approaches in bio-separation methods. The book can provide useful information to biochemists, cytologists, students, and researchers.

Book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health

Download or read book The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health written by Kitty Verhoeckx and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Infogest” (Improving Health Properties of Food by Sharing our Knowledge on the Digestive Process) is an EU COST action/network in the domain of Food and Agriculture that will last for 4 years from April 4, 2011. Infogest aims at building an open international network of institutes undertaking multidisciplinary basic research on food digestion gathering scientists from different origins (food scientists, gut physiologists, nutritionists...). The network gathers 70 partners from academia, corresponding to a total of 29 countries. The three main scientific goals are: Identify the beneficial food components released in the gut during digestion; Support the effect of beneficial food components on human health; Promote harmonization of currently used digestion models Infogest meetings highlighted the need for a publication that would provide researchers with an insight into the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of respective in vitro and ex vivo assays to evaluate the effects of foods and food bioactives on health. Such assays are particularly important in situations where a large number of foods/bioactives need to be screened rapidly and in a cost effective manner in order to ultimately identify lead foods/bioactives that can be the subject of in vivo assays. The book is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest and highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated and, as noted above, highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for undergraduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.
