Download or read book Grammar By Diagram Second Edition written by Cindy L. Vitto and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2006-07-10 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grammar by Diagram, second edition is a book designed for anyone who wishes to improve grammatical understanding and skill. Using traditional sentence diagraming as a visual tool, the book explains how to expand simple sentences into compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, and how to employ verbals (infinitives, gerunds, and participles) and other structures for additional variety. The text addresses the most frequent usage errors by explaining how to distinguish between adjectives and adverbs; how to avoid problems of pronoun case, agreement, and consistency; how to ensure that verbs will agree with their subjects and will be appropriate in terms of tense, aspect, voice, and mood; and how to phrase sentences to avoid errors in parallelism or placement of modifiers. Six appendices incorporate further exercises, a summary of key basics from the text, and supplemental material not included in the body of the text but useful for quick reference. This new edition includes additional exercises and has been revised and updated throughout.
Download or read book E English Grammar Preposition only written by Durga Prasad and published by Durga Prasad. This book was released on 2016-03-06 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description (Preposition) Preposition is one of the most important parts of speech. It is too tough to have mastery over it. That is why most of the people ignore it. So far as I know, I do realise that preposition is the lifeline of English Grammar and so of English language and literature to a great extent. In view of this dexterity everyone must read it thoroughly with sheer sincerity. It will, I am sure, enrich their language and literature. I have tried my level best to explain the chapter, though tough, with suitable examples in a very simple language so that even a beginner can understand and grasp this tough chapter with ease. Whatever I have written about, I have written it after thorough study. It is not merely a description but a thesis with a new idea, with a unique thought and over and above with a superb presentation. You can access to my website and read the full chapter on online payment of Rs.99 only. My website: www.e-bluebooks.com Thanks! ********************************************

Download or read book Sentence Comprehension written by David J. Townsend and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using sentence comprehension as a case study for all of cognitive science, David Townsend and Thomas Bever offer an integration of two major approaches, the symbolic-computational and the associative-connectionist. The symbolic-computational approach emphasizes the formal manipulation of symbols that underlies creative aspects of language behavior. The associative-connectionist approach captures the intuition that most behaviors consist of accumulated habits. The authors argue that the sentence is the natural level at which associative and symbolic information merge during comprehension. The authors develop and support an analysis-by-synthesis model that integrates associative and symbolic information in sentence comprehension. This integration resolves problems each approach faces when considered independently. The authors review classic and contemporary symbolic and associative theories of sentence comprehension, and show how recent developments in syntactic theory fit well with the integrated analysis-by-synthesis model. They offer analytic, experimental, and neurological evidence for their model and discuss its implications for broader issues in cognitive science, including the logical necessity of an integration of symbolic and connectionist approaches in the field.

Furthermore, she examines challenges and offers strategies for dealing with cultural disconnects, The influence of new technologies, and language preferences of students.
Download or read book From Complex Sentences to a Formal Semantic Representation using Syntactic Text Simplification and Open Information Extraction written by Christina Niklaus and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents a discourse-aware Text Simplification approach that splits and rephrases complex English sentences within the semantic context in which they occur. Based on a linguistically grounded transformation stage, complex sentences are transformed into shorter utterances with a simple canonical structure that can be easily analyzed by downstream applications. To avoid breaking down the input into a disjointed sequence of statements that is difficult to interpret, the author incorporates the semantic context between the split propositions in the form of hierarchical structures and semantic relationships, thus generating a novel representation of complex assertions that puts a semantic layer on top of the simplified sentences. In a second step, she leverages the semantic hierarchy of minimal propositions to improve the performance of Open IE frameworks. She shows that such systems benefit in two dimensions. First, the canonical structure of the simplified sentences facilitates the extraction of relational tuples, leading to an improved precision and recall of the extracted relations. Second, the semantic hierarchy can be leveraged to enrich the output of existing Open IE approaches with additional meta-information, resulting in a novel lightweight semantic representation for complex text data in the form of normalized and context-preserving relational tuples.
Download or read book Essentials of Grammatical Theory written by D. J. Allerton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-10 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book, first published in 1979, is to provide a sound basic introduction to the study of grammar within linguistics. The work concentrates primarily on the core of grammatical theory rather than a single narrow theoretical viewpoint. After introductory chapters on the study of language and language as a semiotic system, the precise tasks of grammatical theory are clearly outlined. The aims and problems of generative grammar are then described, and the importance of grammatical analysis is highlighted. The central part of the book is devoted to the fundamental questions of syntactic theory and a detailed study of morphology. Finally, the author surveys the problems of grammar beyond the sentence. This title will be of interest to students of linguistics.
