Book Sensation of Movement

Download or read book Sensation of Movement written by Thor Grünbaum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sensation of Movement explores the role of sensation in motor control, bodily self-recognition and sense of agency. The sensation of movement is dependent on a range of information received by the brain, from signalling in the peripheral sensory organs to the establishment of higher order goals. Through the integration of neuroscientific knowledge with psychological and philosophical perspectives, this book questions whether one type of information is more relevant for the ability to sense and control movement. Addressing conscious sensations of movement, experimental designs and measures, and the possible functions of proprioceptive and kinaesthetic information in motor control and bodily cognition, the book advocates the integration of neuroscientific knowledge and philosophical perspectives. With an awareness of the diverse ideas and theories from these distinct fields, the book brings together leading researchers to bridge these divides and lay the groundwork for future research. Of interest to both students and researchers of consciousness, Sensation of Movement will be essential reading for those researching motor control, multimodal perception, bodily self-recognition, and sense of agency. It aims to encourage the integration of multiple perspectives in order to arrive at new insights into how sensation of movement can be studied scientifically.

Book Parables for the Virtual

Download or read book Parables for the Virtual written by Brian Massumi and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-09 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the body has been the focus of much contemporary cultural theory, the models that are typically applied neglect the most salient characteristics of embodied existence—movement, affect, and sensation—in favor of concepts derived from linguistic theory. In Parables for the Virtual Brian Massumi views the body and media such as television, film, and the Internet, as cultural formations that operate on multiple registers of sensation beyond the reach of the reading techniques founded on the standard rhetorical and semiotic models. Renewing and assessing William James's radical empiricism and Henri Bergson's philosophy of perception through the filter of the post-war French philosophy of Deleuze, Guattari, and Foucault, Massumi links a cultural logic of variation to questions of movement, affect, and sensation. If such concepts are as fundamental as signs and significations, he argues, then a new set of theoretical issues appear, and with them potential new paths for the wedding of scientific and cultural theory. Replacing the traditional opposition of literal and figural with new distinctions between stasis and motion and between actual and virtual, Parables for the Virtual tackles related theoretical issues by applying them to cultural mediums as diverse as architecture, body art, the digital art of Stelarc, and Ronald Reagan's acting career. The result is an intriguing combination of cultural theory, science, and philosophy that asserts itself in a crystalline and multi-faceted argument.

Book Non Motor Symptoms of Parkinson s Disease

Download or read book Non Motor Symptoms of Parkinson s Disease written by K. Ray Chaudhuri and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2014 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are known to suffer from motor symptoms of the disease, but they also experience non-motor symptoms (NMS) that are often present before diagnosis or that inevitably emerge with disease progression. The motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease have been extensively researched, and effective clinical tools for their assessment and treatment have been developed and are readily available. In contrast, researchers have only recently begun to focus on the NMS of Parkinson's Disease, which are poorly recognized and inadequately treated by clinicians. The NMS of PD have a significant impact on patient quality of life and mortality and include neuropsychiatric, sleep-related, autonomic, gastrointestinal, and sensory symptoms. While some NMS can be improved with currently available treatments, others may be more refractory and will require research into novel (non-dopaminergic) drug therapies for the future. Edited by members of the UK Parkinson's Disease Non-Motor Group (PD-NMG) and with contributions from international experts, this new edition summarizes the current understanding of NMS symptoms in Parkinson's disease and points the way towards future research.

Book Fundamentals of the Theory of Movement Perception by Dr E Mach

Download or read book Fundamentals of the Theory of Movement Perception by Dr E Mach written by Laurence R. Young and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-12-31 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a bilingual edition of Ernst Mach's classic 1875 text on the vestibular system. Mach was an eminent physicist who worked on the speed of sound (Mach as the unit of sound speed), on visual perception (Mach bands which describe contrast phenomena), mechanics (Einstein specifically refers to him as a decisive influence), and created the philosophical foundation of positivism. Mach's work is central to the consideration of processing and human movement perception - a topic of considerable current interest. The early insights and examples Mach provides are instructive, and largely unknown nowadays. Bound along with the text is a CD-ROM, which includes, among other things, the English version of the text, extensive biographies, references, articles, and links to the footnotes.

Book Body Memory Metaphor and Movement

Download or read book Body Memory Metaphor and Movement written by Sabine C. Koch and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-25 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Body Memory, Metaphor and Movement is an interdisciplinary volume with contributions from philosophers, cognitive scientists, and movement therapists. Part one provides the phenomenologically grounded definition of body memory with its different typologies. Part two follows the aim to integrate phenomenology, conceptual metaphor theory, and embodiment approaches from the cognitive sciences for the development of appropriate empirical methods to address body memory. Part three inquires into the forms and effects of therapeutic work with body memory, based on the integration of theory, empirical findings, and clinical applications. It focuses on trauma treatment and the healing power of movement. The book also contributes to metaphor theory, application and research, and therefore addresses metaphor researchers and linguists interested in the embodied grounds of metaphor. Thus, it is of particular interest for researchers from the cognitive sciences, social sciences, and humanities as well as clinical practitioners.

Book Seeing Motion

Download or read book Seeing Motion written by Romana Karla Schuler and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central focus of this publication is the synthesis of science and art in the field of visual perception, in particular how early 19th century perceptual research into illusions, kinetic illusory figures, and illusory movement influenced the apparative / machine, kinetic art of the 20th century and the computer-generated visual art of the 21st century. Professional artists have traditionally used innovative, scientific inventions involving light and perspective for their work as well as making use of “visual aids”. Since the beginning of the 1920s, artists like Marcel Duchamp have been experimenting with illusory movement. Based on these early ideas and artistic experiments, and due to its relationship with illusory space, there was a renewed interest in illusory contour, especially among representatives of kinetic art and op art. Seeing Motion provides an historical overview extending from the theories of experimental visual perception research (Hermann Helmholtz, Ernst Mach, Sigmund Exner, Wilhelm Stern, Vittorio Benussi, Max Wertheim, George Stratton, Ivo Kohler) to apparative art (Alfons Schilling) and electronic-digital art (Jeffrey Shaw, Peter Weibel).

Each volume is intended to present a particular topic comprehensively, and each chapter will serve as a synthetic overview and guide to the lit- ature. As such, the chapters present neither exhaustive data reviews nor original research that has not yet appeared in peer-reviewed journals. The volumes focus on topics that have developed a solid data and conceptual foundation rather than on those for which a literature is only beginning to develop. New research areas will be covered on a timely basis in the series as they begin to mature.
