Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiburcio Vasquez is, next to Joaquin Murrieta, America's most infamous Hispanic bandit. After he was hanged as a murderer in 1875, the Chicago Tribune called him "the most noted desperado of modern times." Yet questions about him still linger. Why did he become a bandido? Why did so many Hispanics protect him and his band? Was he a common thief and heartless killer who got what he deserved, or was he a Mexican American Robin Hood who suffered at the hands of a racist government? In this engrossing biography, John Boessenecker provides definitive answers. Bandido pulls back the curtain on a life story shrouded in myth — a myth created by Vasquez himself and abetted by writers who saw a tale ripe for embellishment. Boessenecker traces his subject's life from his childhood in the seaside adobe village of Monterey, to his years as a young outlaw engaged in horse rustling and robbery. Two terms in San Quentin failed to tame Vasquez, and he instigated four bloody prison breaks that left twenty convicts dead. After his final release from prison, he led bandit raids throughout Central and Southern California. His dalliances with women were legion, and the last one led to his capture in the Hollywood Hills and his death on the gallows at the age of thirty-nine. From dusty court records, forgotten memoirs, and moldering newspaper archives, Boessenecker draws a story of violence, banditry, and retribution on the early California frontier that is as accurate as it is colorful. Enhanced by numerous photographs — many published here for the first time — Bandido also addresses important issues of racism and social justice that remain relevant to this day.

Book excerpt: Before the Gold Rush of 1848-1858, Alta (Upper) California was an isolated cattle frontier--and home to a colorful group of Spanish-speaking, non-indigenous people known as Californios. Profiting from the forced labor of large numbers of local Indians, they carved out an almost feudal way of life, raising cattle along the California coast and valleys. Visitors described them as a good-looking, vibrant, improvident people. Many traces of their culture remain in California. Yet their prosperity rested entirely on undisputed ownership of large ranches. As they lost control of these in the wake of the Mexican War, they lost their high status and many were reduced to subsistence-level jobs or fell into abject poverty. Drawing on firsthand contemporary accounts, the authors chronicle the rise and fall of Californio men and women.

Book Individual s Mechanics Movement and Kinematics Post Stroke

Download or read book Individual s Mechanics Movement and Kinematics Post Stroke written by Yih-Kuen Jan and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-12 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disability after stroke is a major burden on society, due to its high incidence and prevalence. Among the priorities of rehabilitation programs, stroke rehabilitation aims to regain independence and improve patients’ quality of life. Dynamic balance, falls prevention and upper limb recovery are essential features for the clinical management of hemiparetic patients. To optimize movement recovery after stroke, it is essential to select multilevel outcome measures for interpretation of motor recovery and clinical decision-making. In this context, the assessment of movement by means of quantitative movement analysis in hemiparetic post-stroke patients is key to planning rehabilitative intervention. Kinematic analysis facilitates interpreting the extent and mechanisms of motor restoration, and it has been increasingly applied in neurological research.
