Book excerpt: The 25th Infantry Division has maintained an active program for training and combined operations with RVNAF and Territorial force units throughout the Division AO since 1967. Throughout 1969 and early 1970 combined operations were emphasized by all Divisional units. However, while combined operations were successful in improving the operational ability of Vietnamese forces in many areas, they fell short of the ultimate objective. Most frequently, combined operations were planned and supervised by US leaders and US forces provided the preponderance of combat power in the operations. Even when this was not the case, the US element and Vietnamese unit usually worked as separate though coordinated maneuver elements, with the net result that the Vietnamese leadership and staff rarely benefited. The Cambodian cross-border operations provided regular ARVN forces the first real test of independent operations from planning through execution; resulting in high esprit and unit confidence that can only be obtained through success on actual operations.

This book was released on 1970 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1970 has been a momentous one for the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) forces of III Corps and Military Region 3 (MR 3). This year witnessed major turning points in the effectiveness of ARVN combat forces, in the relationship between ARVN forces and US forces, and in the nature of the external threat to MR 3 from enemy main force units. These factors have had a significant impact on the progress of Vietnamization wherein the Armed Forces of the Republic of Vietnam (RVNAF) assume full responsibility for the conduct of military operations and thus permit the redeployment of US forces from Vietnam with minimum risk.

Book excerpt: Although these observations relate, in large measure, to the operational aspects of artillery employment, they also correlate the importance of logistic readiness, continuous training, and an efficient unit administration to the conduct of operations in a combat environment. Increased tactical mobility of heavy artillery; the design, construction and employment of airmobile fire direction centers; improved survey operations; and aspects of the artillery Vietnamization program are dealt with in detail. Overviews of major tactical operations are presented from an artillery point of view, with emphasis upon artillery lessons learned.

Book Senior Officer Debriefing Report II Field Force Vietnam Artillery Period 21 May 1969 to 20 November 1969

Download or read book Senior Officer Debriefing Report II Field Force Vietnam Artillery Period 21 May 1969 to 20 November 1969 written by L. D. Kinnard and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following observations were made in late November 1969 and pertain to a six month period as Commanding General, II Field Force Vietnam Artillery from May 21, 1969 to November 20, 1969. It might be useful at the outset to comment briefly on the enemy and friendly situation in the II Field Force area during that period. As a result of FWMAF successes, the main force enemy units have moved into outlying areas. It appears that the enemy's major objectives were to reopen LOC's and to disrupt the FWMAF pacification effort. His tactics were characterized by stand off attacks using mortars and rockets, sapper reconnaissance and selected attacks, and main force attacks in strength along the border. The enemy's ability to avoid contact whenever possible continued to be his greatest asset. On the other hand, his ability to choose the time and place for battle was being attrited. Our successes have enabled us to accelerate Vietnamization of the war. Territorial security forces were being committed to the security of the populated areas and ARVN units were pushing out to interdict enemy movement and to engage him in the outlying areas. FWMAF continued combat and combat support activities with a view towards accelerating pacification, improving the combat effectiveness of RVNAF, and eroding enemy capability in all areas.
