Book Tropical Rainforest Research Current Issues

Download or read book Tropical Rainforest Research Current Issues written by D.S. Edwards and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1996-06-30 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains 53 of the papers presented at the Conference on Tropical Rainforest Research - Current Issues, which was held in Brunei Darussalam in April 1993. The book provides an overview of current knowledge, particularly with respect to south-east Asia, and is divided into three sections - Biodiversity, Forest Dynamics and Socioeconomics. The Biodiversity section emphasises the vast range of life forms in tropical forests and considers the theory and practice of estimating species richness and spatial distribution, while contributions on Forest Dynamics provide a better understanding of the maintenance of this species richness. With an improved background of ideas on rainforest dynamics and biodiversity, better management and conservation strategies are possible, and some of these are explored in the papers on Socioeconomics. The need to demonstrate the total worth of tropical forests to ensure their conservation is taken up by a number of contributors.

Book excerpt: Proceedings of a conference on Tropical Forests: Botanical Dynamics, Speciation and Diversity held at the University of Aarhus, Denmark, August 8*ba10, 1988. The increasing rate of destruction of the world's tropical forests gives grave cause for concern on several counts. In conservative terms, species are being lost at an incredible rate, many before they have even been described. In scientific terms, habitats, communities, and unique systems are lost before they can be studied and used to broaden our understanding of ecological processes in general. The meeting on which this book is based aimed to address two basic needs: to describe some of the marvellous biological treasures of tropical forests and to learn what they can tellus about processes in ecology, and to alert us all once again to the disaster which is overtaking this rich and varied environment.

Book Changes and Disturbance in Tropical Rainforest in South East Asia

Download or read book Changes and Disturbance in Tropical Rainforest in South East Asia written by D. M. Newbery and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Views on the dynamics of tropical forests are changing rapidly with the recognition that their environment is variable on the decadal to century scale. Fluctuating climatic conditions partly determine tropical forest structure, species composition and dynamics. Tropical communities are also highly contingent in space and time with respect to site and historical factors. Tropical forests have experienced to some degree this disturbance regime in the past, but climatologists are now predicting increasingly frequent extreme events in the new century. The combination of increasing deforestation and land-use conversion by man plus an increasingly variable environment means a situation that could be very difficult to manage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term Forest Dynamics Plots (FDPs) allow ecologists to explain patterns in diversity and dynamics in tropical forests around the world. In this collection, Elizabeth Losos and Egbert Giles Leigh Jr. assemble extensive standardized data—collected here in one location for the first time—from sixteen tropical FDPs and synthesize the findings, putting these unique and valuable plots in a global context by highlighting the utility of the collected data for conservation and forest management. Written by experts in the field of tropical ecology, Tropical Forest Diversity and Dynamism will appeal to students and professionals with an interest in community ecology and patterns of diversity.

Book Managing the Future of Southeast Asia s Valuable Tropical Rainforests

Download or read book Managing the Future of Southeast Asia s Valuable Tropical Rainforests written by Ratnam Wickneswari and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides current knowledge about tropical rain forest genetics and its implications for the profitable and sustainable management of forest resources in Southeast Asia. Each chapter covers a major topic in the evolutionary biology of tropical rain forest trees and how management systems interact with these natural dynamics. Authors provide an up-to-date and insightful review of important scientific findings and conclude with practical recommendations for the modern forester in Southeast Asia. Several chapters provide compelling discussions about commonly neglected aspects of tropical forestry, including the impact of historical dynamics of climate change, anthropogenic threats to genetic viability, and the important role of wildlife in maintaining genetic diversity. These discussions will promote a deeper appreciation of not only the economic value of forests, but also their mystery and intangible values. The silvicultural industry in Southeast Asia is a major contributor to the regional economy but the connection between scientific research and the application and development of policy could be improved upon. This book will help bridge that gap. This book will prove beneficial reading for forestry students, professional forest managers, and policy makers, who do not have technical training in genetics. It is also intended for non-specialists who are involved in the tropical timber industry, from the local forest manager to the international timber purchasing agent.

Book Forest Dynamics and Conservation

Download or read book Forest Dynamics and Conservation written by Manoj Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-16 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book unveils forestry science and its policy and management that connect past and present understanding of forests. The aggregated knowledge is presented to cover the approaches adopted in studying forest structure, its growth, functioning, and degradation, especially in the context of the surrounding environment. The application of advance computation, instrumentation, and modelling has been elaborated in various chapters. Forest ecosystems are rapidly changing due to forest fires, deforestation, urbanization, climate change, and other natural and anthropogenic drivers. Understanding the dynamics of forest ecosystems requires contemporary methods and measures, utilizing modern tools and big data for developing effective conservation plans. The book also covers discussion on policies for sustainable forestry, agroforestry, environmental governance, socio-ecology, nature-based solutions, and management implication. It is suitable for a wide range of readers working in the field of scientific forestry, policy making, and forest management. In addition, it is a useful material for postgraduate and research students of forestry sciences.

Book Life Forms and Dynamics in Tropical Forests

Download or read book Life Forms and Dynamics in Tropical Forests written by Gerhard Gottsberger and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical forests are certainly the fastest shrinking ecosystems on earth. At the same time, they are the least studied habitats on continental earth. For most areas, we even don't have complete inventories for the best-known groups of organisms, such as the angiosperms, not even mentioning less well-known groups. These examples show how many facets of forest biology must be investigated - and how few of them have been studied to date. Even fewer have been explored in a comparative manner in different regions, so that we normally still don't know whether an effect has general or more or less local character. However, these studies also provide a roadmap for future investigations in forest ecosystems.

Book Tropical Forest Community Ecology

Download or read book Tropical Forest Community Ecology written by Walter Carson and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-08-31 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, tropical ecology has been a science often content with descriptive and demographic approaches, which is understandable given the difficulty of studying these ecosystems and the need for basic demographic information. Nonetheless, over the last several years, tropical ecologists have begun to test more sophisticated ecological theory and are now beginning to address a broad array of questions that are of particular importance to tropical systems, and ecology in general. Why are there are so many species in tropical forests and what mechanisms are responsible for the maintenance of that vast species diversity? What factors control species coexistence? Are there common patterns of species abundance and distribution across broad geographic scales? What is the role of trophic interactions in these complex ecosystems? How can these fragile ecosystems be conserved? Containing contributions from some of the world’s leading tropical ecologists, Tropical Forest Community Ecology provides a summary of the key issues in the discipline of tropical ecology: Includes contributions from some of the world’s leading tropical ecologists Covers patterns of species distribution, the maintenance of species diversity, the community ecology of tropical animals, forest regeneration and conservation of tropical ecosystems
