Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is the field of physics that studies the constituents and interactions of atomic nuclei. The most commonly known applications of nuclear physics are nuclear power generation, but the research has provided application in many fields, including those in nuclear medicine and magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear weapons, ion implantation in materials engineering, and radiocarbon in geology and archaeology. The field of particle physics evolved out of nuclear physics and is typically taught in close association with nuclear physics. A heavy nucleus can contain hundreds of nucleons which means that with some approximation it can be treated as a classical system, rather than a quantum-mechanical one. In the resulting liquid-drop model, the nucleus has an energy which arises partly from surface tension and partly from electrical repulsion of the protons. The liquid-drop model is able to reproduce many features of nuclei, including the general trend of binding energy with respect to mass number, as well as the phenomenon of nuclear fission. Superimposed on this classical picture, however, are quantummechanical effects, which can be described using the nuclear shell model, developed in large part by Maria Goeppert-Mayer and J. Hans D. Jensen. Nuclei with certain numbers of neutrons and protons (the magic numbers 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, 126, ...) are particularly stable, because their shells are filled. Other more complicated models for the nucleus have also been proposed, such as the interacting boson model, in which pairs of neutrons and protons interact as bosons, analogously to Cooper pairs of electrons.

Book excerpt: The Conference OC Bologna 2000: Structure of the Nucleus at the Dawn of the CenturyOCO was devoted to a discipline which has seen a strong revival of research activities in the last decade. New experimental results and theoretical developments in nuclear physics will certainly make important contributions to our knowledge and understanding of Nature's fundamental building blocks. The interest aroused by the Conference among the scientific community was clearly reflected in the large number of participants. These represented the most important nuclear physics laboratories in the world. The Conference covered five major topics of modern nuclear physics: nuclear structure, nucleusOConucleus collisions, hadron dynamics, nuclear astrophysics, and transdisciplinary and peaceful applications of nuclear science. It reviewed recent progress in the field and provided a forum for the discussion of current and future research projects. Contents: Structure of Nuclei Far from the Valley of Beta-Stability; Nuclear Structure; Physics of High Spin States; Symmetries in Nuclear Structure; Collective Excitations; Nuclear Structure at Finite Temperature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has three volume. The first volume is mainly devoted to the macroscopic-microscopic theory in its traditional form and extended to very high mass and charge asymmetry. Applications of this theory to the emission of different kinds of charged particles from nuclei are presented in the second volume, where recent experimental achievements in alpha decay, proton, and heavy ion (14C, 24Ne, 28Mg, etc.) radioactivities are also discussed. Experiments on spontaneous fission, fission isomers, and more complex phenomena like particle-accompanied fission, delayed processes: p, a, 2p, t, n, 2n, 3n, and the new mechanism of cold fission (or fission with compact shapes) are described in detail in the third volume.

Download or read book Quantum Mechanics In Potential Representation And Applications written by Arvydas Juozapas Janavicius and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-07-21 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written with a focus on new mathematical methods and physical modeling that lay the groundwork for an interpretation to various experimental results and phenomena in nuclear physics, quantum mechanics, and particle physics. Summarized in three parts, the main topics of the book are as follows. The first part importantly addresses scattering theory and nuclear reactions, with the usage of new potential representation method. This perturbation method offers the wave function as a product of the free particle solution and a function which depends on the interaction potential, allowing handy analytical expressions and integral equations for finding scattering matrices. It is highly applicable to the study of scattering and absorption of neutrons in atomic reactors, as well as the interactions between protons and nuclei by scattering processes in, for example, cyclotrons. The second part of the book concerns the perturbation method by variation of free constants and the semi-relativistic shell model of heavy nuclei in order to understand their stability. The last part is then furnished with the semi-relativistic model of mesons and relates to the binding energies of quarks in charm and bottom mesons. This book would be a valuable resource for students and researchers on new mathematical methods in the theoretical unravelling of experiments concerning nuclei and mesons, nuclear reactors, radioactive isotopes, particle accelerators, new materials in electronics and healthcare products, as well as other practical applications of nuclear physics and quantum mechanics.

Download or read book Atomic and Nuclear Physics written by Thomas Albert Littlefield and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the death of Dr. Littlefield it was decided that I should undertake the revision ofthe whole of Atomic and Nuclear Physics: an Introduction for the third edition, and it was soon apparent that major changes were necessary. I am confident that these changes would have had Dr. Littlefield's approval. The prime consideration for the present edition has been to modernize at a minimum cost. As much as possible of the second edition has therefore been retained, but where changes have been made they have been fairly drastic. Thus the chapters on fine structure, wave mechanics, the vector model of the atom, Pauli's principle and the Zeeman effect have been completely restructured. The chapters on nuclear models, cosmic rays, fusion systems and fundamental particles have been brought up to date while a new chapter on charm and the latest ideas on quarks has been included. It is hoped that the presentation of the last named will give readers a feeling that physics research can be full of adventure and surprises.
Download or read book Exotic Nuclei and Nuclear Particle Astrophysics II written by Livius Trache and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2008-02-11 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book represents the proceedings of the conference with the same name, held for two weeks in the Carpathian mountains resort of Sinaia, Romania. It aims to provide the reader with comprehensive reviews on topics in exotic nuclei, nuclear and particle astrophysics, including the most recent results in the field. The articles are written by outstanding professors from prestigious research centers over the world. It treats phenomena from the smallest to largest scales in the Universe, from nuclei to galaxies. On one hand, the study of exotic nuclei is seeking answers about the structure and interaction of unique finite quantum mechanical many-body systems. On another hand, it provides data that have impact on the understanding of the origin of the elements in the Universe. The abundance of the elements are indelible fingerprints of the evolution of the Universe, of the large array of processes and places where nucleosynthesis took place. The High Energy cosmic rays give access to phenomena we cannot reproduce on Earth and places we will never want to visit, but seek to understand. The book collects articles that offer insights on how experiments in the terrestrial nuclear physics laboratories can be combined with observations of the outer space to enlarge our basic knowledge. The volume is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Professor Robert E. Tribble (Texas A&M University).
