Book Semiconductor Optical Modulators

Download or read book Semiconductor Optical Modulators written by Koichi Wakita and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of GaAs/ AIGaAs double heterostructure lasers has opened the door to a new age in the application of compound semiconductor materials to microwave and optical technologies. A variety and combination of semiconductor materials have been investigated and applied to present commercial uses with these devices operating at wide frequencies and wavelengths. Semiconductor modulators are typical examples of this technical evolutions and hsve been developed for commercial use. Although these have a long history to date, we are not aware of any book that details this evolution. Consequently, we have written a book to provide a comprehensive account of semiconductor modulators with emphasis on historical details and experimantal reports. The objective is to provide an up-to-date understanding of semiconductor modulators. Particular attention has been paid to multiple quantum well (MQW) modulators operating at long wavelengths, taking into account the low losses and dispersion in silica fibers occuring at around 1.3 and 1.55 mm. At the present time, MQW structures have been investigated but these have not been sufficiently developed to provide characteristic features which would be instructive enough for readers. One problem is the almost daily publication of papers on semiconductor modulators. Not only do these papers provide additional data, but they often modify the interpretations of particular concepts. Almost all chapters refer to the large number of published papers that can be consulted for future study.

Book Methods and Devices for Optimizing the Operation of a Semiconductor Optical Modulator

Download or read book Methods and Devices for Optimizing the Operation of a Semiconductor Optical Modulator written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A semiconductor-based optical modulator includes a control loop to control and optimize the modulator's operation for relatively high data rates (above 1 GHz) and/or relatively high voltage levels. Both the amplitude of the modulator's driving voltage and the bias of the driving voltage may be adjusted using the control loop. Such adjustments help to optimize the operation of the modulator by reducing the number of errors present in a modulated data stream.

Book Semiconductor Integrated Optics for Switching Light

Download or read book Semiconductor Integrated Optics for Switching Light written by Charlie Ironside and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the technology of switching or modulating light in semiconductor optical waveguides. Currently a key function for optical communications systems is the conversion of data from an electrical signal to an optical signal for transmission in very low loss optical fibres and the converse process of optical to electrical conversion the O/E/O data conversion. This conversion between electronic and photonic signals imposes an energy consumption overhead on optical communication systems. So many research workers have been attracted to ultrafast all-optical switching of data in different formats. As a way of introduction to all-optical switching in semiconductor waveguides the book covers the electro-optic effect, electroabsorption and electrorefraction; effects that can be used in semiconductor optical modulation devices. But the book focuses on all-optical switching using second and third order optical nonlinearities in AlGaAs optical waveguides. It covers a variety of device configurations including integrated nonlinear couplers and Mach-Zehnder interferometers. Further, it provides design software in suit of Mathematica notebooks that can be used to explore the device design.

Book A Brief Sojourn Into Silicon Optical Modulators

Download or read book A Brief Sojourn Into Silicon Optical Modulators written by Ching Eng (Jason) PNG and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides insight into the author's sojourn into the evolution of a key optical component using the silicon material platform - the optical modulator. It introduces the reader to the basic theory of such a device which performs the critical modulation function and then seeks to perform a review of the state-of-the-art of such a device up to 2004. Upon the appreciation of their history, the author sets out to breach the key operating speed limit of 1GHz (the fastest device then was 20MHz) - a prediction that was the first in the world at that time along with huge power reductions. The ability to reach this speed was verified shortly by Intel scientists. Subsequent fabrication and measurements along with uber important failure analysis and equivalent circuit s are also detailed. For readers already in this field of research, there is a chapter providing ideas to boost device operating bandwidth to 40GHz and beyond and also to improve semiconductor device physics. The author sincerely hopes that readers will be able to benefit and learn critical insight into the study of such devices and avoid the possible pitfalls that might face a researcher in this field.

Book Nonlinear Optics in Semiconductors I

Download or read book Nonlinear Optics in Semiconductors I written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1998-10-22 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its inception in 1966, the series of numbered volumes known as Semiconductors and Semimetals has distinguished itself through the careful selection of well-known authors, editors, and contributors. The "Willardson and Beer" Series, as it is widely known, has succeeded in publishing numerous landmark volumes and chapters. Not only did many of these volumes make an impact at the time of their publication, but they continue to be well-cited years after their original release. Recently, Professor Eicke R. Weber of the University of California at Berkeley joined as a co-editor of the series. Professor Weber, a well-known expert in the field of semiconductor materials, will further contribute to continuing the series' tradition of publishing timely, highly relevant, and long-impacting volumes. Some of the recent volumes, such as Hydrogen in Semiconductors, Imperfections in III/V Materials, Epitaxial Microstructures, High-Speed Heterostructure Devices, Oxygen in Silicon, and others promise that this tradition will be maintained and even expanded. Reflecting the truly interdisciplinary nature of the field that the series covers, the volumes in Semiconductors and Semimetals have been and will continue to be of great interest to physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and device engineers in modern industry.

Book Laser Fabricated Electro Optical Modulators in GaAs

Download or read book Laser Fabricated Electro Optical Modulators in GaAs written by L. Eldada and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-speed external modulators are necessary components for impressing signals onto lightwave carriers used in optical fibers for various transmission applications in telecommunications. III-V semiconductor waveguide electro-optic modulators offer the advantage of monolithic integration, which gives them an edge over lithium niobate modulators. We have used novel laser direct-writing techniques to masklessly define waveguide and electrode structures, and have fabricated an electro-optic polarization modulator in GaAs/AlGaAs. Our modulator exhibits a high extinction ratio and low value of Vpi.
