Download or read book Self titled written by Geoffrey Brown and published by Coach House Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a breakup break you apart? In Self-Titled, Geoffrey Brown stares into a mirror and writes what he sees, what he thinks, what he feels. The result? A self-portrait that's at once comic and psychotic, a complex consciousness captured in crystalline prose. Memories, manias, miasmas - Brown morphs the machinery of his mind into an utterly original entity, equal parts diary, criminal confession, sex manual and mash note, as hecontemplates a breakup. The novel splits into two parts; in 'First,' our slacker hero analyzes the minutiae of the relationship, trying to understand what he did, why it went wrong, and whether she'll come back. In 'Second' he knows she's not coming back, and he gets angry, flagellating himself with a whip of wordplay and remorse. Self-Titled is a singular achievement with universal appeal: who hasn't squinted into a mirror and said, 'What the hell is happening here?' If Gertrude Stein's autobiography was Everybody's Autobiography, then Brown's self-portrait is everybody's self-portrait. Guest edited for the press by Derek McCormack.

Download or read book self titled written by C. Sean McGee and published by C. Sean McGee. This book was released on 2021-11-20 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of 29 Fairy Tales for Grown-Ups - some of them sweet and endearing, and some of them just down right mean and unsettling. There is the gorgeous and heart-warming tale of Charlie, the little raindrop who is scared to jump off the cloud and be who he is meant to be; the endearing love story between Mabel and Abel, an elderly couple seeking the services of a hitman as a test of their love; the heart-wrenching tale of Felicity, a young girl on the eve of an abortion, wishing it were yesterday; and a re-telling of Red Riding Hood, one full terror and bloodsplattering twists. A surreal journey, as if the lovechild of Albert Camus, Stephen King, and the Dali Lama had sought, with a broken heart, to unease and frighten as much as delight and enlighten. P.S. You die at the end.

Download or read book Modern Noise Fluid Genres written by Jeremy Wallach and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 2008-12-15 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to “local” sound when globalization exposes musicians and audiences to cultural influences from around the world? Jeremy Wallach explores this question as it plays out in the eclectic, evolving world of Indonesian music after the fall of the repressive Soeharto regime. Against the backdrop of Indonesia’s chaotic and momentous transition to democracy, Wallach takes us to recording studios, music stores, concert venues, university campuses, video shoots, and urban neighborhoods. Integrating ground-level ethnographic research with insights drawn from contemporary cultural theory, he shows that access to globally circulating music and technologies has neither extinguished nor homogenized local music-making in Indonesia. Instead, it has provided young Indonesians with creative possibilities for exploring their identity in a diverse nation undergoing dramatic changes in an increasingly interconnected world. Ultimately, he finds, the unofficial, multicultural nationalism of Indonesian popular music provides a viable alternative to the religious, ethnic, regional, and class-based extremism that continues to threaten unity and democracy in that country.

Book Ode to a Tenor Titan

Download or read book Ode to a Tenor Titan written by Bill Milkowski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After John Coltrane, there was no more revered and profoundly influential saxophonist on the planet than Michael Brecker. For those coming of age in the 1970s, during that transitional decade when the boundaries between rock and jazz had begun to blur, Brecker stood as a transcendent figure. He was their Trane. Ode to a Tenor Titan follows Michael's story from growing up in Philadelphia, finding his tenor sax voice during his brief stint at Indiana University, making his move to New York City in 1969 and taking the Big Apple by storm through the sheer power of his monstrous chops on the instrument. A commanding voice in jazz for four decades, Brecker possessed peerless technique (a byproduct of his remarkable work ethic and relentless woodshedding) and an uncanny ability to fit into every musical situation he encountered, whether it was as a ubiquitous studio musician (more than nine hundred sessions) for such pop stars as Paul Simon, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen, Todd Rundgren, Chaka Khan, and Steely Dan; playing with seminal fusion bands like Dreams, Billy Cobham, and the Brecker Brothers; or collaborating with the likes of Frank Zappa, Charles Mingus, Pat Metheny, and Herbie Hancock. But his biggest triumphs came as a bandleader during the last twenty years of his career, when he produced some of the most challenging, inspired, and visionary modern jazz recordings of his time. A preternaturally gifted player whose facility seemed almost superhuman, he was also modest to a fault and universally beloved by fellow musicians. After coming through a dark decade of heroin addiction, he turned his life around and became a beacon for countless others to lead clean and sober lives. At the peak of his powers, he was struck down by a rare preleukemic blood disease that sidelined him for two and a half years. He got off a sick bed to make a heroic comeback with his swan song, Pilgrimage, which Pat Metheny called "one of the great codas in modern music history" and which earned him a posthumous Grammy Award in 2007. Michael Brecker was a player of tremendous heart and conviction as well a person of rare humility and kindness, and his story is one for the ages.

Book Beyonc and Beyond

  • Author : Naila Keleta-Mae
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-02-22

Download or read book Beyonc and Beyond written by Naila Keleta-Mae and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines three years of Beyoncé’s career as a pop mega star using critical race, feminist and performance studies methodologies. The book explores how the careful choreography of Beyoncé’s image, voice and public persona, coupled with her intelligent use of audio and visual mediums, makes her one of the most influential entertainers of the 21st century. Keleta-Mae proposes that 2013 to 2016 was a pivotal period in Beyoncé’s career and looks at three artistic projects that she created during that time: her self-titled debut visual album Beyoncé, her video and live performance of "Formation," and her second visual album Lemonade. By examining the progression of Beyoncé’s career during this period, and the impact it had culturally and socially, the author demonstrates how Beyoncé brought 21st century feminism into the mainstream through layered explorations of female blackness. Ideal for scholars and students of performance in the social and political spheres, and of course fans of Beyoncé herself, this book examines the mega superstar’s transition into a creator of art that engages with Black culture and Black life with increased thoughtfulness.
