Book Higher Education Accreditation

Download or read book Higher Education Accreditation written by Paul L. Gaston and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is the accreditation system “broken” as claimed by successive Secretaries of Education and some recent reports? This book addresses this question head-on, asking whether accreditation is indeed in need of radical reform, and whether the agencies’ authority should be curtailed; or whether in fact the changes now underway – that accrediting agencies contend ensure rigorous and consistent standards and degrees that are a reliable gauge of student attainment – are moving the academy and the nation in the right direction. In a sweeping and ambitious book, Paul Gaston deploys his knowledge and experience as a peer reviewer for three regional accrediting agencies, a former board member and chair of the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors, and his involvement in the early stages of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, to go beyond the polemics to explore whether a strategy that builds on the emerging values and good practices can achieve the substantive and positive improvements the public is demanding. As an introduction for readers new to the debate, he provides a brief overview of the development of accreditation, its terminology, and structure, describing how it currently works, and what it has achieved; and offers insight into the proliferation of the missions of accreditation – as well as the multiplicity of stakeholders with an interest in its outcomes – to question whether the mandate of accreditation should, as some contend, be expanded, or particular missions reassigned or abandoned. This established, he undertakes a dispassionate analysis of the arguments and recommendations of critics and supporters of the current direction of accreditation to identify common ground and explore constructive ways forward, paying specific attention to current and potential reforms of the three sectors of higher education accreditation: the seven regional accrediting associations, the national accreditors, and programmatic, or “specialized” accreditation. The book concludes by outlining a comprehensive approach to reform. His proposal would preserve practices that already work well while advancing important changes that can be incrementally implemented. The result would be a higher education accreditation structure more cost effective, more efficient, more transparent and accountable, and more responsive to institutional and public needs.

Book Planning and Assessment in Higher Education

Download or read book Planning and Assessment in Higher Education written by Michael F. Middaugh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION Demonstrating Institutional Effectiveness In this era of increasing pressure on higher education institutions for accountability, Planning and Assessment in Higher Education is an essential resource for college and university leaders and staff charged with the task of providing evidence of institutional effectiveness. Michael F. Middaugh, a noted expert in the field, shows how colleges and universities can successfully measure student learning and institutional effectiveness and use these results to create more efficient communications with both internal and external constituencies as well as promote institutional effectiveness to support student learning. "How can the assessment of institutional effectiveness be used to provide a solid foundation for planning? Middaugh has crafted a comprehensive, practical guide that also explains what accrediting agencies really want and need to know about these topics." Elizabeth H. Sibolski, executive vice president, Middle States Commission on Higher Education "Only Michael Middaugh, the unquestioned national leader in this field, could write such a lucid overview of how to make institutional assessment and planning really work as a tool rather than as a tedious requirement. He helped invent and shape the focus of national assessment rubrics and now offers his insights into how to make them work for your institution." John C. Cavanaugh, chancellor, Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education "Middaugh provides extremely helpful and practical guidance and insights on how colleges and universities can use assessment tools and frameworks to improve both academic programs and administrative operations. A valuable and timely book for all higher education leaders." James P. Honan, senior lecturer on education, Harvard Graduate School of Education

Book The Making of an Urban Community College in a Union and Political Environment

Download or read book The Making of an Urban Community College in a Union and Political Environment written by Dr. Willie J. Greer Kimmons and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-09-21 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The manuscript will carefully discuss the beginning and turbulent struggle of Wayne County Community College in the 60s; the middle years of growth and pain of the 70s; the crisis of the 80s that almost closed the college; the growth in the 90s; and its current status of productivity and stability. In addition, the book will address community and instructional leaders roles, duties, responsibilities, and styles. Their commitments and obligations in the teaching, learning, and leadership development process will also be addressed. The document will demonstrate how to plan, how to develop your own leadership style, and how to inspire leadership in others. This body of work is an outgrowth of many years of discussions between citizens of Detroit; former students, teachers, and staff; political and community leaders; and the board of trustees and former presidents of Wayne County Community College in Detroit, Michigan, whom I owe a tremendous amount of admiration, respect, and appreciation too.
