Book excerpt: There is overwhelming evidence linking increased physical activity with positive changes in cognitive functioning and brain health. Much of what we know about these interrelationships comes from aerobic exercise training studies with older adults and children. This literature has paved the way for the neuroscientific investigation of mechanisms responsible for exercise-induced cognitive and brain health enhancement, a list that ranges from molecular changes to systemic changes in executive control and neural connectivity. A new perspective has also emerged that aims to understand executive control processes that may underlie the regulation of health behavior. In accordance with this view, physical activity falls under the umbrella of health behaviors that require a substantial amount of executive control. Executive control is a limited resource, and the aging process depletes this resource. People who regularly exercise are said to have higher “self-regulatory control”—planning, goal-shielding and impulse control—than irregular exercisers. The successful maintenance of physical activity participation in lieu of daily cognitive stressors likely reflects an adaptive resistance to control failures. Indeed, a handful of studies have shown the relationship between greater executive control and subsequently higher levels of physical activity. However, little is known about the neural correlates of physical activity adherence or sedentary behavior, with the view that neurocognitive factors have an antecedent and reciprocal influence on these behaviors. No research has focused on the brain networks responsible for the self-regulation of physical activity, which likely overlaps with structures and functions playing critical roles in the regulation of other health behaviors. Interdisciplinary investigations are needed to explain the extent to which physical activity self-regulation and self-regulatory failure is dependent upon, or under the influence of executive control processes and brain networks. Understanding the degree to which self-regulatory resources may be enhanced, restored, and trained will have enormous implications for basic science and applied fields. It is also of great import to understand whether or not physical activity self-regulation is a domain-specific behavior associated with specific brain networks, or to determine the extent to which regulatory network-sharing occurs. The aim of this Frontiers Research Topic is to curate contributions from researchers in social and cognitive neurosciences and related fields, whose work involves the study of physical activity behavior, self-regulation and executive control. For this Research Topic, we, therefore, solicit reviews, original research articles, and opinion papers, which draw theoretical or empirical connections related to sustained physical activity behavior, self-regulatory strategies, cognitive performance, and brain structure and function. While focusing on work in the neurosciences, this Research Topic also welcomes contributions in the form of behavioral studies, psychophysiological investigations, and methodological innovations. This Frontiers Research Topic will carve out new directions for the fields of exercise, cognitive, and social neurosciences. We hope you will consider submitting your work.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study is to complete a construct validation of a physical activity intervention on the subjects2 knowledge and use of 8 self-regulation strategies: self-monitoring, goal setting, social support, environmental aid, self-reinforcement, time-management, self-efficacy, and tailoring. Using a one group pre-test post-test design, a physical education instructor delivered a 5-week intervention to all sixth (n=20), seventh (n=28) and eighth (n=24) graders at a private school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A self-report self-regulation instrument was administered at baseline and immediately post-intervention. Students also completed a knowledge test at the end of the intervention. Book excerpt: Given the high prevalence of obesity with low rates of physical activity among Appalachian adolescents, it is critical to understand the factors that are associated with promoting healthy lifestyle change. Behavioral researchers have been continuously examining factors that directly influence physical activity behavior among adolescents. However, the relationship between physical activity, BMI, and self-regulation skills is not fully understood among adolescents at high risk of obesity. The purpose of this study is to determine if self-regulation skills for exercise and exercise self-efficacy mediate the association between BMI percentile and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) at baseline among a sample of 9th and 10th-grade Appalachian adolescent boys and girls. This study was a secondary analysis that examined pre-existing baseline data from high school adolescents participating in a behavioral intervention from an NIH funded group-randomized controlled trial. Participants completed a self-reported questionnaire to measure how well they use self-regulation strategies to influence their physical activity. The self-regulation subscales measured include self-monitoring, goal setting, social support, self-reward, time management, and overcoming barriers. Free-living physical activity was measured using the wGT3X-BT Actigraph accelerometer over a 7-consecutive day period. BMI percentile was calculated using measures of height and weight and referenced by the CDC age-and-sex-specific growth chart. The bootstrap resampling method was used to examine mediating effects between the variables of interest. At baseline, the sample of 9th and 10th grade adolescents report low rates of use of self-regulation strategies (mean = 2.17 – 2.74). Among Appalachian adolescents, BMI percentile was not significant to daily MVPA at baseline. Additionally, none of the self-regulation skills or exercise self-efficacy mediated the relationship between BMI percentile and daily MVPA among 9th and 10th-grade Appalachian adolescents. In general, there was no mediation detected due to the nonsignificant relationship between BMI percentile and the self-regulation skills or exercise self-efficacy. The results of this study provide a descriptive analysis of self-regulatory skills and MVPA before participation in a G-RCT behavioral intervention. While no mediating effects were determined, more research is needed to examine other health markers of obesity that affect self-regulatory skills to further understand the impact on physical activity behavior.

Book excerpt: Despite the well-established benefits of physical activity, current interventions to promote physical activity produce only small to moderate effects that are poorly maintained. Social cognitive theories have attempted to explain behavior, identifying self-efficacy, outcome expectancies, and self-regulation as potentially important predictors of physical activity engagement. However, self-regulation has rarely been measured by processes such as distress tolerance (the ability to persist in a psychologically or physically distressing task) or executive function (a complex set of neurocognitive processes that enable self-directed behavior), which underlie the ability to regulate behavior. The current study aimed to evaluate self-regulation, measured by physical and psychological distress tolerance, delay discounting, set-shifting, and complex problem-solving as predictors of physical activity intention, physical activity behavior, and the relationship between intention and behavior in a sample of individuals at the six-month point of a behavioral weight loss program. Results revealed that self-regulatory ability may predict intention and behavior, specifically that physical distress tolerance is positively associated with intention and delay discounting is positively associated with behavior. No measure of self-regulation was associated with the gap between intention and behavior. Delay discounting may, however, moderate the relationship between intention and behavior. Finally, several interactions between physical distress tolerance and executive function variables indicate that deficits in one measure of self-regulation may moderate the relationship between other measures of self-regulation and physical activity intention and behavior. Results indicate that self-regulation may be an important and understudied area of research with regard to physical activity. Future research should seek to further delineate these relationships in order to inform treatment development.

Book excerpt: While being physically active is an important and valued goal for many individuals, family, work, school, and friends are also valued aspects of their lives. Many social cognitive theories examine health behaviours in isolation, without taking into consideration the context, or life circumstances, in which people seek to achieve such health behaviours. Examining a single goal-directed behaviour without acknowledging the possible influence of other concurrent goals managed by an individual may oversimplify the self-regulation needed in daily life. The overarching purpose of this dissertation was to examine exercise behaviour in the context of concurrently held, valued non-exercise activities (e.g., academics, family). Relationships between valued non-exercise goals, concurrent self-regulatory efficacy, and physical activity behaviour were explored. Social cognitive theory provided the theoretical framework for the three studies conducted. Study 1 sought to discriminate university students whose physical activity level was either commensurate or not with achieving health benefits using social-cognitive predictors. These predictors took into account participants beliefs about the concurrent management of physical activity with other valued non-exercise goals. Results indicated that concurrent self-regulatory efficacy (belief in abilities to self-regulate the management of multiple goals including exercise) discriminated those active enough to achieve health benefits from those who were not active enough. Study 2 used a prospective design to explore potential mechanisms that allow individuals to successfully self-regulate exercise behaviour with other goals during hectic times. Undergraduate students were observed during a 4-week examination period where they faced greater than usual challenges to exercising regularly. Concurrent self-regulatory efficacy was identified as a partial mediator of the relationship between value of an exercise goal and future exercise behavi.
