Book excerpt: A growing body of evidence suggests that people exhibit large biases when processing information about themselves, but less is known about the underlying inference process. This paper studies belief updating patterns regarding academic ability in a large sample of students transitioning from middle to high school in Mexico City. The paper takes advantage of rich and longitudinal data on subjective beliefs together with randomized feedback about individual performance on an achievement test. On average, the performance feedback reduces the relative role of priors on posteriors and shifts substantial probability mass toward the signal. Further evidence reveals that males and high-socioeconomic status students, especially those attending relatively better schools, tend to process new information on their own ability more effectively.

Section I: Background of the study The Indian school education system in the last few decades has gone on to make their mark in diverse fields of national and international life. There are diverse aspects of our educational system, particularly the school system that are lacking to make a significant impact. It is characterized by inflexibility where learning is unconnected with the students' 2 life and this in turn has led to the neglect of students' present abilities and increase in their difficulties (NCERT, 2006). The National focus Group of the NCERT (2006) further points out that the Indian School Education System is a monolithic system that has resulted in a set of practices for the development of curriculum, syllabus and textbooks rather focused on the requirements of the examination system than the child's learning requirement, aims of education and the socioeconomic and cultural contexts of learners. It further highlights the fact that educational practices in school are a dull routine, characterized by bored teachers and students, and a rote system of learning. Performance in academics requires all aspects of the students' wellbeing such as psychological behavioral, emotional, physical and social. Students who are physically and psychologically stable and strong tend to perform better when compared to those who are not. In other words, those who are experiencing psychological problems face difficulties in their academic performance. Hence, psychological stability turns out to be an important predictor of high academic achievement. Understanding aspects of the self, particularly of students who are low achievers is critical, due to the large number of children who are left behind and the social ramifications that result from poor education. In a country like India, with a population over a billion, the demand the school going population places on the limited resources, government policies and the type of delivery all gain special significance when the students' academic life and career is taken into consideration. With a huge demand of good quality education and delivery that the school going population places on the government and private players, it is quite possible that students, who fail, fall back. It is all the more so, if students have difficulties in learning. It is therefore imperative and of critical importance to have a clear understanding of the barriers that impact students' education so that successful school based interventions can be,

Book excerpt: Despite an increase in the accessibility to higher education by non-traditional populations, there remain a significant number of students that come from families where they are the first to attend and hopefully graduate from college. In addition to the challenges faced by first time college students, first-generation college students (FGS) are faced with their own unique and complex issues. Notably, the relationship between self-perception of academic abilities and academic performance can have an impact on the retention and persistence of this student population. The author frames the issues faced by FGS and deconstruct the role of self-perception, self-esteem and self-efficacy in academic achievement amongst the target population ultimately intended to lead to successful postsecondary outcomes. Seven categories emerged from data content analysis of the data: (a) being an African American male, (b) being a Man of Morehouse, (c) being a FGS, (d) community support, (e) peer support, (f) institutional support and (g) motivation. Based on findings, a student centric success model was designed to support the academic success of the target population.

Book excerpt: A survey of 261 students at Des Moines Area Community College-Boone Campus was conducted to examine self-esteem in relation to perceptions of role models, emotional support, academic adjustment, and academic success. Symbolic interactionism and the looking-glass self formed the conceptual basis of the research. Factor and Cronbach's alpha analyses tended to confirm internal validity and reliability of the constructs, respectively. Hypothesis testing revealed some significant (p[Less than or equal to].05) relationships. Pearson's product moment correlation linked student self-esteem and social perceptions. Self-esteem was higher when the students: had a support person, saw the support person or role model as similar to themselves, saw the support person or role model as capable and stable, and felt that their emotional support needs were met, and that the support person provided effective support. Self-esteem was higher when the looking-glass self was favorable; students believed that the support person or role model would see them positively. In addition, self-esteem was higher when students perceived themselves as academically adjusted and successful, voluntarily enrolled, having a live-in partner, and having attended high school in central Iowa. Self-esteem was lower with discrimination, abuse, family dysfunction, and expecting to drop out. Regression analysis revealed that self-esteem depends on students being academically adjusted, academically successful, emotionally supported, female, and perceiving that their support person sees them favorably and is like them. Significant also were role models and support persons over age 24, and students of the same ethnicity as the student and seen as similar to the students, themselves. Role models were generally male, and support persons were of the opposite gender (especially for male students). Based on these findings, peer mentors might benefit first-year students at Boone Campus. Peer mentors would be successful sophomores who could act as role models, support persons, and tutors for mentees, guiding (mentoring) them to promote academic achievement and self-esteem.
