Book Summer Camp Youth Leadership Development

Download or read book Summer Camp Youth Leadership Development written by Katlyn Martin and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This qualitative study aims to explore adolescents' perceptions of leadership and Waycross Camp, specifically its Leaders-in-Training (i.e., L.I.T.) program. Data was collected through interviews with former L.I.T. program participants and reflective memos. Research aims evolved as the study progressed, ultimately posing one research question and three sub-questions. The guiding research question asked: How has Waycross Camp's L.I.T. program informed participants' notions of leadership? The remaining sub-questions asked: a) How do external factors (i.e., location, peers, or staff) contribute to Waycross Camp's L.I.T. program participants' camp experience?, b) What do participants value about Waycross Camp's L.I.T. program?, and c) How has Waycross Camp's L.I.T. program influenced participants since the program's completion? A review of the literature led to this study's conceptual framework, which included three overlapping domains: 1) "Youth development," 2) "Youth leadership," and 3) "Summer camp." Using grounded theory and constructivism, a constant comparison data analysis revealed four emergent participant themes, including 1) "Bridging the gap," 2) "Giving permission to be human," 3) "Rolling up your sleeves," and 4) "Serving the greater good." Each of these four themes yielded an outcome, including 1) "Community," 2) "Openness," 3) "Empowerment," and 4) "Character," respectively. Four camp outcomes depicted in relevant research were synthesized with the four emergent themes and their outcomes, including 1) "Social relationships," 2) "Identity and self concept," 3) "Agency and engagement," and 4) "Spirituality, ethicality, and morality," respectively. Together, the themes, outcomes, and camp outcomes produced a holistic model of youth leadership.Ultimately, these four themes, outcomes, and camp outcomes revealed an overlap between participants' valued notions of leadership and valued aspects of Waycross Camp and its L.I.T. program. In framing leadership as a relational experience, participants demonstrated an understanding of leadership congruent with contemporary leadership theories. While participants reported that some external factors (i.e., location and peers) contributed to their L.I.T. experiences, responses were mixed as to the perceived impact of L.I.T. program staff. Although participants struggled at times to identify specific skills acquired during L.I.T. that they were able to apply to specific circumstances, participants reported feeling better equipped and assured in exercising leadership after the program's completion. Furthermore, many participants attributed significant gains in life skills (e.g., compassion, understanding, etc.) to Waycross Camp experiences. Key words: youth development, youth leadership, camp" --

Book Youth Leadership Development Programs Participants Pre and Post perceptions of Leadership Life Skills Development

Download or read book Youth Leadership Development Programs Participants Pre and Post perceptions of Leadership Life Skills Development written by Courtney A. Pruner and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research exists on the participation of youth in various types of youth leadership development programs. However, the problem is a lack of understanding of the perception of participants’ pre- and postparticipation on their development of leadership life skills. The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine how youth leadership development program participants perceive themselves in the area of leadership life skills development pre- and postparticipation in a youth leadership development program. In this study, specific consideration was given to the difference in gender and ethnic minority affiliation reporting scores. The independent variables in this study were participation in youth leadership development programs (i.e., yes or no), gender, and ethnic minority affiliation. The outcome measure in the study was self-reported student leadership life skills attribute scores. Students from the study site completed the survey associated with the data collection tool. After analyzing the responses, 123 of those responses met the criteria to be included in the study. The students surveyed in this study reported gains in how they perceived their leadership life skills development pre- and postparticipation in a youth leadership development program. There was also a gain in the perception of leadership life skills development in gender and ethnic minority affiliation reporting scores.

Book Development of Youth Leadership Life Skills of Texas Youth as San Antonio Livestock Exposition School Tour Guides

Download or read book Development of Youth Leadership Life Skills of Texas Youth as San Antonio Livestock Exposition School Tour Guides written by Laura A Real and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many youth organizations, including 4-H, FFA, and Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), offer countless opportunities for their members to learn and further develop leadership life skills that are important in becoming contributing members of society as adults. The purpose of this study was to determine if Texas 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members were developing leadership life skills as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. Additionally, demographic characteristics were evaluated to determine which of these characteristics affected leadership life skills development. Demographic characteristics evaluated included gender, age, ethnicity, youth organization membership, years of membership, years of experience as a school tour guide, and previous leadership skills training. The target population was Texas 4-H, FFA, and FCCLA members who served as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. School tour guides referred to the 4-H, FFA, FCCLA members who imparted their personal knowledge of agriculture to elementary-aged students from San Antonio and surrounding area schools that requested an educational tour at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. There were 1,691 school tour guides on the days of February 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, and 18, 2004. All school tour guides returning for the afternoon exit-meeting during the 2004 San Antonio Livestock Exposition were asked to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire was a 28-item survey instrument that was based on the scales: Working with Groups, Understanding Self, Communicating, Making Decisions, and Leadership. Conclusions showed school tour guides had developed leadership life skills. The most influential demographic characteristics were gender, previous leadership experiences, and ethnicity. Females and those participants who had had previous leadership experiences had stronger perceptions of their leadership life skills. In addition, African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics, and Anglos all had stronger perceptions of their leadership life skills when compared to Native Americans. As a result of this study, the researcher recommends that youth should be encouraged to participate as school tour guides at the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. School tour guides had developed leadership life skills. In addition, youth should also be encouraged to participate in other leadership- development activities through other programs to further develop and enhance their leadership life skills.

Book Life Skills Gained Through the 4 H Sheep Skillathon

Download or read book Life Skills Gained Through the 4 H Sheep Skillathon written by Terra Rose Kimes and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to determine Tennessee youths' perception of their youth leadership life skills development. The study also determined why youth participated in the sheep skillathon. This study utilized a quantitative research approach. The research design for this descriptive study was a one shot case study. One instrument was used during this study for data collection, the Skillathon Life Skills Questionnaire. The Skillathon Life Skills Questionnaire is a researcher-developed instrument with three demographic questions which included age, grade, and gender, the 30 item Youth Leadership Life Skills Development Scale (Dormody, Seevers & Clason, 1993), 11 items that assessed possible reasons for participating in the skillathon, and an open-ended question that allowed youth to state any other reasons they participated in the skillathon. Tennessee youth completed the Skillathon Life Skills Questionnaire at the Tennessee State Sheep Expo. Data were analyzed used SPSS version 22 for Windows. Frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations were calculated to summarize demographics, youth leadership life skills development, and why students participate in the skillathon. Additionally, a frequency table was produced based on the open-ended question which asked participates to list other reasons for participating in the skillathon not listed in the 11 reasons for participating items. The study found sheep skillathon participants perceived the sheep skillathon to have a positive impact or moderate gain in their youth leadership life skill development. The study also found a majority of youth agreed the following reasons are why they participated in the skillathon: (a) 4-H Agent or Ag Teacher; (b) I wanted to be Premier Exhibitor; (c) I thought it would be fun; (d) I wanted to see how much I knew about my project; (e) to achieve a goal; (f) build self-confidence; ( g) challenge myself to try new things; (h) competition; and (i) interested in animal science career. Based on these findings, recommendations for practice and future research were given.

Download or read book Meet the Wizz written by Michael O'Neill and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many leadership books written for business professionals that crowd the bookshelves and online libraries of stores today. There are, however, few leadership books that are targeted toward teens and young adults. Michael O'Neill discovered many situations that come up in the daily life of a teen after discussing this with his high school aged daughter. Since Michael had taught leadership development at the world's largest software firm for over seven years, he realized that the lessons he taught about leadership in the business world could be applied to a person of any age, thus helping teens and young adults make smart decisions and take more leadership roles within their school and organizations. Rather than write a 'preachy' instructional book on learning leadership skills, Michael decided to instead write a fictional story about a teenage girl named Maddie who is trying to become a drum major for her high school marching band. What Maddie thinks is leadership turns out to be exactly wrong, and it takes a new friendship with another student she nicknames "The Wizz" to help her understand the concepts behind what makes a great leader. The story is a funny, heartwarming, and educational tale of how understanding the key differences between leadership and management can help students through their toughest situations. Although the story is told through a character in high school band, it is easy to swap out any high school activity where leadership is required. Football players, cheerleaders, chess club, debate club, academic decathlon teams, etc... All of these organizations have opportunities where kids can demonstrate important leadership skills. Even kids who are not a part of an organization can benefit from learning these leadership skills as they explain how to best relate to others and learn to make smart decisions in difficult situations. The skills taught here are the same skills Michael taught in his leadership development program at work. Adults can benefit too from the teachings, however the story is targeted toward teens and young adults. Michael hopes that those reading his book can identify with the characters in this story and hopefully learn some new skills that will last them a lifetime.

Book Student Leadership Practices Inventory Self Instrument 4 Page Insert NCR Paper

This book was released on 1998-08-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique leadership development program is for the young adult who aspires to be an exemplary leader. From the college classroom to the local youth club, the Student Leadership Practices Inventory has helped thousands of young people assess their leadership potential and improve their skills. Drawing from years of impeccable research and real-world experience, Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have developed four practical resources that can be used alone or in a workshop setting: the Self, the Observer, the Student Workbook, and the Facilitator's Guide. Both the Self and Observer are questionnaires for the student leader and the person who has observed the student in action. Each survey features thirty statements based on five important leadership practices: Challenging the Process, Inspiring a Shared Vision, Enabling Others to Act, Modeling the Way, and Encouraging the Heart. To score their results, participants will find in the Student Workbook grids for recording scores, charts for interpreting scores, and worksheets for summarizing and planning action steps. For those who need guidance in designing and conducting a student leadership program, there is the Facilitator's Guide. In addition to detailed instructions and examples, workshop leaders will find masters for overhead transparencies and handouts, checklists for meeting the leadership challenge, normative data on different types of student leaders, and instructions for obtaining computerized scoring software.

Book Preparing for Leadership

Download or read book Preparing for Leadership written by Robert B. Woyach and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1993-07-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is leadership? Can it be taught, or is it an inborn quality? How does a young person, in the controlled environment of home, school, and peer groups, learn to be a leader in a way that relates to the larger context of community and the world? From his involvement with high school students and educators in an international youth program, Robert B. Woyach has developed and successfully tested a refreshingly inclusive model of leadership for young people in school and community groups. In this book, Woyach presents his model in an upbeat, unpretentious style designed to engage the interest of teens. To make his theory meaningful to his readers, Woyach uses real-life teen group situations -- school clubs, extracurricular activities, teams, and school projects -- to show effective use (and non-use) of these skills. Lively line drawings -- sometimes utilizing cartoons or characters familiar to teens -- encapsulate the author's ideas. High school students will appreciate Woyach's unique focus on leadership in the familiar world of school and civic groups, rather than the remote arena of the business world. They will also value how he humanizes leadership, showing how insecurity can increase a reader's effectiveness. Finally, teens, accustomed to sharp divisions between authority and followers, will be intrigued by the author's insistence on empowerment as the key to successful leadership. This guide will be a useful resource for teachers of social studies or courses addressing lifestyle issues such as self-esteem and individuality. Guidance counselors, school club supervisors, coaches, school psychologists, librarians, and others will also find it a useful resource for the teens they advise.
