Book Self knowledge in the Age of Theory

Download or read book Self knowledge in the Age of Theory written by Ann Hartle and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1997 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The philosophical ideal of self-knowledge has been all but forgotten in what Walker Percy calls "the age of theory." Hartle attempts to recover that ancient philosophical task and to articulate what that ideal could mean in the context of our historical situation. She considers and rejects claims that we can attain self-knowledge through theory, anti-theory, or narrative and she defends philosophy as a humanistic, rather than scientific, endeavor. Self-Knowledge in the Age of Theory will be of great interest not only to philosophers but to scholars of literature and other humanities.

Book A Primer on Unified Feel Theory

Download or read book A Primer on Unified Feel Theory written by Jerome Jacob Rappoport and published by Author House. This book was released on 2006-06-02 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For each of us, life’s dilemma can be reduced to two positions: 1) The universe always existed, you exist for a fleeting moment, and the universe continues on; 2) The universe was created when you were born and it will cease to exist when you die. Both of these perspectives are absolutely true and they pose for the inquirer a dichotomous enigma. Religion, or what is purported to be so, should be involved with these two aspects; but it’s not! Unified Feel Theory is not religion, but a religious process to be experienced and struggled with by every inquiring mind; singularly and alone. Not until the quintessential self is known by its own inquiring mind, can it be of any meaningful service to its self or to others. Society has managed to intimidate and encapsulate each inner self to such a degree that only those aspects and qualities needed and wanted by the collective are nurtured and allowed to make their presence known and be seen as the outer self. The Equilibrium Texts outfit and encourage an inward journey to seek, rescue, and bring forth, one’s own inner being.

Book Towards a Self Knowledge Revolution

Download or read book Towards a Self Knowledge Revolution written by Christopher Cherpas and published by . This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Sociology - Miscellaneous, language: English, abstract: What passes for self-knowledge today consists largely of narratives we tell ourselves and others, with no basis in systematic measurement or experimentally tested theory. By even the most minimal scientific standards for what legitimately could be claimed as knowledge, it is strange but safe to say that no person in history has ever been known - by himself, herself, or anyone else. Compared to our knowledge in other areas, our self-ignorance is profound. What we lack is a science of ourselves. Despite the standard exhortations to know and be responsible for ourselves, the fact is that there has never been a focus of expertise, technology, and dedicated effort to understand a single person. A science of each person is now possible in our time. To be successful, a program of self research would require the integration of specially designed tools and techniques - in short, a "self system" - for pursuing self-knowledge over a lifetime, and this simply has yet to be developed. This text discusses self-discovery and is an unabashed call to overcome both the internal and external forces that have deterred us from pursuing deep, scientific understandings of ourselves. By taking on this challenge, let us also prepare for the consequences of success - including the possibility that a radically technology-enhanced solution to the age-old problem of "knowing thyself" will lead us to nothing less than a global democratic revolution. In fact, it may be that only through a self-knowledge revolution can the importance of each and every person on Earth be accepted universally, irrevocably, for all time.

Book Theory Driving Research

Download or read book Theory Driving Research written by Dennis M. McInerney and published by IAP. This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theory Driving Research: New wave perspectives on self-processes and human development provides a unique insight into self-processes from varied theoretical perspectives. The chapters in this volume develop avant-garde theoretical ideas to drive future, cutting-edge, empirical research and together, in one collected volume, make a valuable contribution to scholarly literature on self-processes. Among the themes covered are resurrecting the “I-self”, a re-look at the dichotomy between the I-self, and the Me-self based on James's analysis, the actualization of human potential, naturalizing and contextualizing the self, hypo-egoic states, personal proficiency networks, competition and performance relationships, achievement motivations, passion and optimal functioning in society, competence and self-worth threat, new interpretations of expectancy-value research, methodological advances in BFLPE research and multilevel models of student achievement motivation. This monograph, the fourth in the International Advances in Self Research monograph series, provides wealth of information on new theorizing and provides a platform for generating the next wave of research designed to understand the fundamental role self-processes play in human development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans are not model epistemic citizens. Our reasoning can be careless, our beliefs eccentric, and our desires irrational. Quassim Cassam develops a new account of self-knowledge which recognises this feature of human life. He argues that self-knowledge is a genuine cognitive achievement, and that self-ignorance is almost always on the cards.

Download or read book Self Knowledge written by Brie Gertler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you know your own thoughts and feelings? Do we have ‘privileged access’ to our own minds? Does introspection provide a grasp of a thinking self or ‘I’? The problem of self-knowledge is one of the most fascinating in all of philosophy and has crucial significance for the philosophy of mind and epistemology. In this outstanding introduction Brie Gertler assesses the leading theoretical approaches to self-knowledge, explaining the work of many of the key figures in the field: from Descartes and Kant, through to Bertrand Russell and Gareth Evans, as well as recent work by Tyler Burge, David Chalmers, William Lycan and Sydney Shoemaker. Beginning with an outline of the distinction between self-knowledge and self-awareness and providing essential historical background to the problem, Gertler addresses specific theories of self-knowledge such as the acquaintance theory, the inner sense theory, and the rationalist theory, as well as leading accounts of self-awareness. The book concludes with a critical explication of the dispute between empiricist and rationalist approaches. Including helpful chapter summaries, annotated further reading and a glossary, Self Knowledge is essential reading for those interested in philosophy of mind, epistemology, and personal identity.

Book The Self in Infancy

Download or read book The Self in Infancy written by P. Rochat and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-10-30 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origins of knowledge about the self is arguably the most fundamental problem of psychology. It is a classic theme that has preoccupied great psychologists, beginning with William James and Freud. On reading current literature, today's developmental psychologists and ethologists are clearly expressing a renewed interest in the topic. Furthermore, recent progress in the study of infant and animal behavior, provides important and genuinely new insights regarding the origins of self-knowledge. This book is a collection of current theoretical views and research on the self in early infancy, prior to self-identification and the well-documented emergence of mirror self-recognition. The focus is on the early sense of self of the young infant. Its aim is to provide an account of recent research substantiating the precursors of self-recognition and self-identification. By concentrating on early infancy, the book provides an updated look at the origins of self-knowledge.

Download or read book The Self Knower written by R.A. Wicklund and published by Springer. This book was released on 1992-02-29 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The self-knower has become a hero within many contemporary cultures. This hero goes by various different titles, including the" self-insightful/' the "self-actualized/' the "autonomous and mature/' the "representative of independent thinking/' the "morally virtuous/' and many more. The common denominators of civilization's preoccupation with the self knower are (1) the mundane, popular literature that draws our attention to our "inner being" and (2) the remarkable intensity of therapies and quasitherapies that promise insight into the true core of our inner being. A characteristic example from an extensive, week-or month-long training course would read, "Come because you want to discover your self ... . Through Mr. X [the group leaderl, we can realize our true identities ... . This gives our lives sense and perspective." We have tried to trace the logic underlying the diverse self-knower movements and have found three common themes underlying them. For one, the varieties of theories and treatments associated with self-knowl edge are interested exclusively in the appearance of the self-knower. Each representative of the self-knower school has its own set of criteria for identifying the self-knowing person, and in tum, each member of the self-knower school represents certain convictions about how individuals should be evaluated. For instance, if someone manifests warmth and char ity, that person is likely to be pronounced healthy, adjusted, and self knowing.

  • Author : Stephen Hetherington
  • Publisher : Broadview Press
  • Release : 2007-03-19
  • ISBN : 1770482369

Download or read book Self Knowledge written by Stephen Hetherington and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2007-03-19 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-Knowledge introduces philosophical ideas about knowledge and the self. The book takes the form of a personal meditation: it is one person’s attempt to reflect philosophically upon vital aspects of his existence. It shows how profound philosophy can swiftly emerge from intense private reflection upon the details of one’s life and, thus, will help the reader take the first steps toward philosophical self-understanding. Along the way, readers will encounter moments of puzzlement, then clarity, followed by more perplexity and further insights, and then—finally—some philosophical peace of mind.

Book Self knowledge in a Natural World

Download or read book Self knowledge in a Natural World written by Jeremy Cushing and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I reconcile our knowledge of our own minds with philosophical naturalism. Philosophers traditionally hold that our knowledge of our own minds is especially direct and authoritative in comparison with other domains of knowledge. I introduce the subject in the first chapter. In the second and third chapters, I address the idea that we know our own minds directly. If self-knowledge is direct, it must not be grounded on anything more epistemically basic. This creates a puzzle for all epistemologists. For the naturalist, the puzzle is especially tricky. To say that self-knowledge has no epistemic ground threatens the naturalist's ability to understand it as psychologically real. I argue that the idea that self-knowledge is direct is not well motivated and that models of direct self-knowledge have fundamental problems. In the fourth and fifth chapters, I examine first-person authority. I distinguish between epistemic authority, or being in a better position than others to know, and non-epistemic authority, or being immune to challenge according to some conventional norm. I argue that we have only limited epistemic authority over our own minds. I then consider whether there may be an interesting non-epistemic authority attached to the first-person perspective. This would locate first-person authority in connection with our responsibility for our own minds. I argue that this sort of authority may exist, but is unlikely to threaten naturalism without further anti-naturalist commitments in the philosophy of mind. In the final two chapters, I explore the possibility that the underlying disagreements between naturalists and anti-naturalists are about the nature of belief. I consider what failures of self-knowledge might demonstrate about the nature of belief. I show how, with the proper understanding of belief, a theory of self-knowledge can assuage some of these worries. Having adopted a conception of belief that makes sense for philosophy and empirical psychology, I outline a positive theory of self-knowledge and suggest directions for future research.
