Book excerpt: Self-Esteem is a driving force in American Culture. Many believe that it is the secret to great power and wealth. How does a Christian build self-esteem and confidence in their lives? Is self-esteem even something a Christian should desire to build? When I was adopted at the age of four, I left behind everyone and everything I thought I was. My name, my identity and all that I was changed when my adopted parents took me from Beckley WV to Baltimore MD. Just a couple of years later my adopted mom died of cancer. Ultimately I was raised by a single parent alcoholic who constantly yelled at and belittled me with attacks on my intelligence and worth. As a result of my timid demeanor and lack of confidence, I was made fun of, chased, chastised, ridiculed and outcast just because I was different. Trust me, I know what it means to suffer from what psychologists call 'low self-esteem'. I struggled with abandonment and self-worth issues for years as a result of my tumultuous childhood. These issues lead me into teenage rebellion, depression, substance abuse and unbridled promiscuity. I lived a destructive lifestyle because I felt worthless. Sometimes, I even considered whether or not I would be better off dead. There are thousands of Christians who suffer from confidence issues. The answer to these issues cannot be found in behavioral science, psychology, self-help or meditation. The answer is only found in the Bible. The answer is ultimately anchored to our relationship with God thru Jesus Christ. True confidence comes after you realize that the only opinion that ultimately matters is God's. Once you realize this, you're earthly masters are tamed, other people's harsh opinions and musings become less impactful and your focus becomes centered upon God. Vanity or Self-Esteem will not only tear down the worldly mindset that has held you prisoner for so long, it will also set you on the path to realize true confidence in Christ. Confidence that is lifelong. You will no longer fear failure in your job, relationships and your regard for other people's low opinion of you will fade into obscurity. You will be able to take an honest look at yourself, your strengths, your weaknesses and your faults. You will no longer wonder why salvation alone hasn't erased your so-called self-esteem issues. Self-esteem or vanity is a must read for the modern Christian!

Download or read book Mirror Mirror written by Simon Blackburn and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-02 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Think, an enlightening and entertaining exploration of narcissism and self-esteem Everyone deplores narcissism, especially in others. The vain are by turns annoying or absurd, offending us whether they are blissfully oblivious or proudly aware of their behavior. But are narcissism and vanity really as bad as they seem? Can we avoid them even if we try? In Mirror, Mirror, Simon Blackburn, the author of such best-selling philosophy books as Think, Being Good, and Lust, says that narcissism, vanity, pride, and self-esteem are more complex than they first appear and have innumerable good and bad forms. Drawing on philosophy, psychology, literature, history, and popular culture, Blackburn offers an enlightening and entertaining exploration of self-love, from the myth of Narcissus and the Christian story of the Fall to today's self-esteem industry. A sparkling mixture of learning, humor, and style, Mirror, Mirror examines what great thinkers have said about self-love—from Aristotle, Cicero, and Erasmus to Rousseau, Adam Smith, Kant, and Iris Murdoch. It considers today’s "me"-related obsessions, such as the “selfie,” plastic surgery, and cosmetic enhancements, and reflects on connected phenomena such as the fatal commodification of social life and the tragic overconfidence of George W. Bush and Tony Blair. Ultimately, Mirror, Mirror shows why self-regard is a necessary and healthy part of life. But it also suggests that we have lost the ability to distinguish—let alone strike a balance—between good and bad forms of self-concern.

Book Please Don t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes

Download or read book Please Don t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes written by Phoebe Robinson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NATIONAL BESTSELLER, NOW IN PAPERBACK “Another hilarious essay collection from Phoebe Robinson.”—The New York Times Book Review “Strikes the perfect balance of brutally honest and laugh-out-loud funny. I didn’t want it to end.”—Mindy Kaling, New York Times bestselling author of Why Not Me? With sharp, timely insight, pitch-perfect pop culture references, and her always unforgettable voice, New York Times bestselling author, comedian, actress, and producer Phoebe Robinson is back with her most must-read book yet. In her brand-new collection, Phoebe shares stories that will make you laugh, but also plenty that will hit you in the heart and inspire a little bit of rage, and maybe a lot of action. That means revealing her perspective on performative allyship, white guilt, and what happens when white people take up space in cultural movements; exploring what it’s like to be a woman who doesn’t want kids living in a society where motherhood is the crowning achievement of a straight, cis woman’s life; and discussing how the dire state of mental health in America means that taking care of one’s psychological well-being—aka “self-care”—usually requires disposable money. She also shares tales of her mom slowpoking before a visit with Mrs. Obama, the stupidly fake reassurances of zip-line attendants, her favorite things about dating a white person from the UK, and how the lack of Black women in leadership positions fueled her to become the Black lady-boss of her dreams. By turns perceptive, hilarious, and heartfelt, Please Don’t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes is not only a brilliant look at our current cultural moment, it's also a collection that will stay with readers for years to come.

Book Vanity Fairs

Download or read book Vanity Fairs written by Georg Franck and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers readers a comprehensive introduction to the economy of attention from the perspective of the basic motive of the pursuit of attention: self-esteem. As a jumping-off point, it states the stark equation at the heart of this economy— that the self-esteem one can afford depends on one’s income of appreciative attention. The information markets in which participants compete to play a role in the consciousness of others are described as ‘vanity fairs’. Since the pursuit of self-esteem is highly effective when it comes to mobilizing human energies, vanity fairs are not just playgrounds of individual passions, but have been utilized by society since time immemorial as markets for particularly challenging demands. Starting with an analysis of the interface that connects the social economy of attention with the intra-psychic economy of self-esteem, the book then examines two main cases in point: modern science and the post-modern media culture. On the one hand we have scientists working for a ‘wage of fame’, who invest their own attention into getting the attention of others. On the other, today’s dominant media have left the sale of information behind to focus solely on the attraction of attention, which is sold as a service to the advertising industry. In each case the use of attention as a means of payment is key to its phenomenal success. But success comes at a price: the dark side of this monetization of attention is a kind of ’climate change’ in the collective mental sphere which threatens the very existence of our social fabric.

If you could do anything you wanted, what would it be? Aliénor Salmon was working as a happiness researcher in Bangkok when a friend asked her the question that turned life as she knew it on its heels. A novice dancer but experienced social researcher, the Franco-British Aliénor headed west from Bangkok to dance her way through Latin America. As she learns eighteen dances, each native to the countries she visits, she engages with esoteric customs, traditions, and cultures. Through conversations and arduous studio hours, she learns that every step, pivot, and shake thrums with an undeniable spirit of place. And that in a world where we are over-connected but increasingly disconnected from one another, dance offers an authentically human experience. One that allows her to develop tolerance, kindness, truth, and love by holding the hands of a stranger and gazing into their eyes for the time of a song. With her fearless and candid approach, Aliénor will inspire you to take the reins of your own life—and have some fun along the way. In this dance-travelogue, you’ll learn the history and steps of dances like salsa, samba, and tango, enjoy a resplendent meditation on happiness and wanderlust, and receive a life-affirming answer to the question: How do I take the first step?

Book The Ethics of Interpersonal Relationships

Download or read book The Ethics of Interpersonal Relationships written by Joyce Catlett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing this book springs from a deep feeling for people and a grave concern that without a proper understanding of the reasons for their inhumanity in relation to one another and the development of a compassionate world view, it is likely that human beings may eventually destroy themselves and life on the planet. This work is an attempt to explain the source of destructive behaviour and how it manifests itself in personal relationships between men, women, couples, and families, and in the social arena. The author presents a position that offers a hope of altering the destiny of humankind's unethical behavior through better psychological understanding and education. Understanding the source of a person's aggressiveness in defending the fantasy bond and learning to cope with the voice process have strong implications for child-rearing and better mental health practices.
