Book excerpt: Many people believe that art education is important, but few can say exactly why. Here, at last, are the results of the first in-depth research on the "habits of mind" that are instilled by studying art habits the authors argue have positive impacts on student learning across the curriculum. Studio Thinking provides art teachers with a research-based language for describing what they intend to teach and what students learn. This language will help advocates explain arts education to policymakers, help art teachers develop and refine their teaching practices, and help educators in other disciplines learn from existing practices in arts education.

This book was released on 2019-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, there has been a major increase in research into the effects of the arts on health and well-being, alongside developments in practice and policy activities in different countries across the WHO European Region and further afield. This report synthesizes the global evidence on the role of the arts in improving health and well-being, with a specific focus on the WHO European Region. Results from over 3000 studies identified a major role for the arts in the prevention of ill health, promotion of health, and management and treatment of illness across the lifespan. The reviewed evidence included study designs such as uncontrolled pilot studies, case studies, small-scale cross-sectional surveys, nationally representative longitudinal cohort studies, community-wide ethnographies and randomized controlled trials from diverse disciplines. The beneficial impact of the arts could be furthered through acknowledging and acting on the growing evidence base; promoting arts engagement at the individual, local and national levels; and supporting cross-sectoral collaboration.

Book Art Interventions with At Risk Youth

Download or read book Art Interventions with At Risk Youth written by and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Art education and art therapy appear to be a strong tool for improving, internalizing, and externalizing behaviors, as evidenced by limited empirical studies. Art education and art interventions, because of their ability to adapt to a variety of individual needs, could have a significant place in assisting at-risk youth in managing their emotions by improving self-efficacy, self-perception, and hope, which could then lead to less behavioral incidence in the classroom. This thesis examined the specific benefits of art education/interventions and art therapy on individual well-being and how it could assist in increasing self-efficacy, self-perception, and hope. An action research project used visual art as an intervention for seven students in an alternative residential learning center. Students met with the instructor for four art projects over a six-month period with a total of sixteen 45 minute sessions. The results show that art interventions have a statistical benefit in the area of self-efficacy. Other areas such as hope, anxiety, and how the student thinks and feels were less affected during these art interventions. Overall, the results gathered through teacher interactions with students and student questionnaires showed that the students did benefit from the after-school art interventions."--leaf 3.

Book Child Development and Education

Download or read book Child Development and Education written by Teresa M. McDevitt and published by Pearson Educacion. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child Development and Education bridges the gap between theory and practice, showing those who teach and care for infants, children, and adolescents how to apply developmental research and theory to everyday practice. More so than any other text, Child Development and Education not only describes developmental phenomena--for infants through late adolescence--but also faciliates observations of and analyses of what children say, do, and create, ensuring that educators can make informed decisions that meet children's and adolescent's needs. New to the fifth edition is a sensitvity to the cultural and bioecological nature of development. New features of the text situate children and adolescents in the contexts of their upbringing and articulate the implications of these experiences for educators and other professionals. Illustrated is the diverse nature of development and how it is influenced by social, environmental, and cultural contexts. Also new to this edition is support for teacher licensure preparation. Teacher candidates are alerted to developmental concepts and theorists they need to know, and are provided practice test questions and case studies to review, demonstrating for them how to prepare for their licensure exam.
