Book Assessing Self awareness for High School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Download or read book Assessing Self awareness for High School Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders written by Cynthia B. Loftsgard and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My research explores traditional and emerging social skills assessment and instruction specifically for adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). Social learning theory, special interest areas (SIA's) and other interventions are discussed within a transitional framework to guide individuals with ASD toward vocational independence. A case study of nine high school students with ASD followed expert researchers Klin, Bellini and Dunn-Buron's methodology. Findings supported the critical aspect of student self-awareness and involvement in their social skills planning process. Major recommendations include: 1. Involving students with a systemized self-assessment of social skill strengths and weaknesses encourages a greater understanding of self, 2. Effective social skills acquisition includes identifying student's perspective, identifying an instructional "hook", with practice in natural, multiple settings, 3. Focusing on student strengths and SIA's heightens social learning process, 4. Preparation for future vocational placement involves an emphasis on acquisition of expected adult social skills and careful job-matching.

Book Self Referential and Social Cognition in Adolescents with Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Self Referential and Social Cognition in Adolescents with Autistic Spectrum Disorder written by Damian Joseph Lloyd Woods and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dominant social cognition model has construed the central socio-communicative impairments in Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) as deficits in understanding others' minds- what other people know, intend, believe and feel. Difficulties for individuals with ASD have been well documented on "Theory of Mind" (TOM) tasks designed to tap these skills (Boucher, 2012). Recently however, research has shifted toward exploring how individuals with ASD understand their own minds, and to look at the cognitive mechanisms involved in thinking about "the self". The present thesis is situated in the context of this emerging self-referential cognition (SRC) research, including its close connection to social cognition. This thesis explored the quantitative and qualitative differences in neurotypical (NT) adolescents and those with ASD in generating self-images (e.g. concepts such as I am a female, I am a footballer, I am kind) through use of novel fluency tasks (the 'I Am' and '(s)he is' tasks) based on the Twenty Statements Test (TST; Kuhn and McPartland, 1954). Relationships between these tasks and social cognition (TOM measures) were also explored. The results indicated that both NT adolescents and those with ASD exhibited a self-reference effect (SRE), generating more statements about themselves than other people. The magnitude of the SREs was found to be significantly related to several TOM measures such as performance on the Mind in the Eyes task of emotion recognition. Moreover, the ASD group produced significantly less personal attributions across all fluency tasks, but a similar number of social and physical attributions, compared to the NT group. This mirrored emerging findings that indicate a specific deficit in psychological but not physical self awareness in ASD (e.g. Williams, 2010). Additionally, the ASD group were found to make significantly fewer spontaneous social stereotypes on the (s)he is tasks, such as the "Beauty is Good" stereotype, a finding which contrasts with previous research showing preserved social stereotyping in children with ASD (Fonesca et al, 2011). The theoretical and clinical implications of these findings for individuals with ASD are discussed with reference to the "absent-self hypothesis" (e.g. Frith, 2003). Additionally, the promising utility of fluency measures in capturing important aspects of SRC are also noted, including suggestions for further research.

Book Health Self management for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Download or read book Health Self management for Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder written by Jamie L. Rock and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition with differences in communication, social, and behavioral abilities diagnosed in 1 in 54 youth in the United States. Upwards of 95% of individuals with ASD have at least one co-occurring health condition, which may lead to early mortality in this population. Additionally, less than 14% of adolescents with ASD receive guided health transition services aimed to teach youth to self-manage their health throughout life. The gap in health transition services has left many parents with this responsibility. Therefore, given the dearth of research examining transition of health responsibility from parent to adolescent with ASD this study had three specific aims: to explore factors associated with adolescent health self-management (HSM) behavior, compare differences in parent and adolescent perspective, and examine the nature of social facilitation between parent and adolescent that contribute to HSM behavior. Forty adolescents with ASD and parent dyads completed the online survey. Guided by the new Adolescent Health Self-Management (AHSM) Model, results of this descriptive correlational study found many adolescents with ASD were receiving some form of transitional support from parents and report engaging in HSM behavior regardless of receiving guided transition services. However, gaps in health transition may exist during parent and adolescent social facilitation regarding health promoting activities (monitoring health and emotions) and managing existing health conditions (scheduling appointments, managing medications, completing a treatment regiment, etc.). Many conceptual relationships were well explained by the AHSM model in this study. Hierarchical regression analysis found contextual domain variables (parents' marital status, executive function deficits, age at ASD diagnosis) and process domain variables (health knowledge and self-efficacy) explained 43% of the variance in adolescent HSM behavior in this sample. Furthermore, differences in adolescent and parent perspective of beliefs and abilities further reinforce the need for family-centered and coordinated health transition guidance. This is the first known study to examine HSM behavior for adolescents with ASD. Findings of the study suggest many implications addressing practice, research, and policy alike
