Book The Postcolonial Enlightenment

Download or read book The Postcolonial Enlightenment written by Daniel Carey and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-02-26 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last thirty years, postcolonial critiques of European imperial practices have transformed our understanding of colonial ideology, resistance, and cultural contact. The Enlightenment has played a complex but often unacknowledged role in this discussion, alternately reviled and venerated as the harbinger of colonial dominion and avatar of liberation, as target and shield, as shadow and light. This volume brings together two arenas - eighteenth-century studies and postcolonial theory - in order to interrogate the role and reputation of Enlightenment in the context of early European colonial ambitions and postcolonial interrogations of Western imperial aspirations. With essays by leading scholars in the field, Postcolonial Enlightenment address issues central not only to literature and philosophy but also to natural history, religion, law, and the emerging sciences of man. The contributors situate a range of writers - from Hobbes and Herder, Behn and Burke, to Defoe and Diderot - in relation both to eighteenth-century colonial practices and to key concepts within current postcolonial theory concerning race, globalization, human rights, sovereignty, and national and personal identity. By enlarging the temporal and geographic framework through which we read, the essays in this volume open up alternate genealogies for categories, events and ideas central to the emergence of global modernity.

Book excerpt: A history of the rediscovery of India's history... Through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Western world had very little knowledge - or an extremely distorted view - of the glorious and fascinating history of the Indian subcontinent. In fact, with little of the region's 3000-year-old heritage formally preserved and documented, it was widely believed that the country's history had begun with the reign of the Mughals. When the British gained control over the subcontinent, the scholars, explorers and Indophiles among them discovered things and areas of great historical wonder but found few answers. Armed with great intellectual curiosity, they set out to uncover things no one had given a thought to earlier. From William Jones who identified Chandragupta Maurya as 'Sandrocottus' mentioned in Greek sources and set the first chronological point of reference for recorded Indian history to Charles Wilkins who designed the first typeface of the Bengali script; from Henry Colebrooke who shone light on the wonders of ancient Indian scientific knowledge to Alexander Cunningham, the father of Indian archaeology, who led the first excavation of the Harappa site in the Punjab - Forgotten Civilizations brings together the intriguing stories of fifteen intrepid Englishmen who dedicated their lives to rediscovering India's ancient heritage and redefining the significance of its pluralistic and sophisticated culture to the rest of the world.

Download or read book Strangers in the Land written by Roderick Cavaliero and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2002-06-28 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British in India, first as adventurers, then as traders and finally as rulers through the India Office in London and the Viceroy's Government in India, oversaw all aspects of Indian life - district administrations, law, police, army, trade, education and culture and relations with princely states and foreign powers. And yet a sense of alienation among the British always remained. The end came quickly with Indian independence in 1947, and the British left a bitterly divided sub-continent. This is not a blow-by-blow historical account but a narrative social and cultural history which explores the British-Indian relationship at all levels.

  • Author : Michael Curtis
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2009-06-08
  • ISBN : 0521767253
  • Pages : 393 pages

Download or read book Orientalism and Islam written by Michael Curtis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-08 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through an historical analysis of the theme of Oriental despotism, Michael Curtis reveals the complex positive and negative interaction between Europe and the Orient. The book also criticizes the misconception that the Orient was the constant victim of Western imperialism and the view that Westerners cannot comment objectively on Eastern and Muslim societies. The book views the European concept of Oriental despotism as based not on arbitrary prejudicial observation, but rather on perceptions of real processes and behavior in Eastern systems of government. Curtis considers how the concept developed and was expressed in the context of Western political thought and intellectual history, and of the changing realities in the Middle East and India. The book includes discussion of the observations of Western travelers in Muslim countries and analysis of the reflections of six major thinkers: Montesquieu, Edmund Burke, Tocqueville, James and John Stuart Mill, Karl Marx, and Max Weber.
