Book An Anthology Of German Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Anthology Of German Literature Classic Reprint written by Calvin Thomas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Anthology Of German Literature This book is designed to accompany an introductory study of the his tory of German literature. It is assumed that the history itself will be learned, so far as may be necessary, either from lectures or from some other book devoted to the subject. I have tried to make a good anthology for students who have learned to read the language of Goethe and Schiller with some facility, and would like to know something of the earlier periods, but have not studied, and may not care to study, Old and Middle German. On this account the selections in Part First are given in modern German translations. The original texts are omitted because space was very precious and the book was intended as an aid to literary rather than linguistic study. In making the selections my first principle was to give a good deal of the best rather than a little of everything. I wished to make friends for medieval German poetry, and it seemed to me that this could best be done by showing it in its strength and its beauty. So I have ignored much that might have had a historical or linguistic interest for the scholar, and have steadily applied the criterion of literary worth. • Pages : 476 pages

Download or read book Telling Tales written by David Blamires and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2009 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Germany has had a profound influence on English stories for children. The Brothers Grimm, The Swiss Family Robinson and Johanna Spyri's Heidi quickly became classics but, as David Blamires clearly articulates in this volume, many other works have been fundamental in the development of English chilren's stories during the 19th Centuary and beyond. Telling Tales is the first comprehensive study of the impact of Germany on English children's books, covering the period from 1780 to the First World War. Beginning with The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, moving through the classics and including many other collections of fairytales and legends (Musaus, Wilhelm Hauff, Bechstein, Brentano) Telling Tales covers a wealth of translated and adapted material in a large variety of forms, and pays detailed attention to the problems of translation and adaptation of texts for children. In addition, Telling Tales considers educational works (Campe and Salzmann), moral and religious tales (Carove, Schmid and Barth), historical tales, adventure stories and picture books (including Wilhelm Busch's Max and Moritz) together with an analysis of what British children learnt through textbooks about Germany as a country and its variegated history, particularly in times of war.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The German Classics: Masterpieces of German Literature The news of the occurrence spread rapidly, and all through the day two or three hundred people from Rodez - men, women, and children - were standing on both shores staring with a look of fascination and self-induced horror into the depths of the ravine. The question was raised whether it was not a will-o'-the-wisp that had misled the old man. A woman alleged that she had spoken with a shepherd who declared he had heard a cry for help; this, it is true, occurred about midnight, and Fualdes had left his house at eight o'clock. A stout tinker contended that the darkness had not been as dense as all believed; he him self had crossed the fields, on his way from La Valette, at nine o'clock, and the moon was then shining. The inspec tor of customs took him severely to task, and informed him that a new moon had made its appearance the day before, as one could easily find out by looking in the calendar. The tinker shrugged his shoulders, as if to say that in such con junctures even the calendar was not to be trusted. Book Early Germanic Literature and Culture

Download or read book Early Germanic Literature and Culture written by Brian Murdoch and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2004 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of fresh essays examining the wide scope and significance of early Germanic culture and literature. The first volume of this set views the development of writing in German with respect to broad aspects of the early Germanic past, drawing on a range of disciplines including archaeology, anthropology, and philology in addition toliterary history. The first part considers the whole concept of Germanic antiquity and the way in which it has been approached, examines classical writings about Germanic origins and the earliest Germanic tribes, and looks at thetwo great influences on the early Germanic world: the confrontation with the Roman Empire and the displacement of Germanic religion by Christianity. A chapter on orality -- the earliest stage of all literature -- provides a bridgeto the earliest Germanic writings. The second part of the book is devoted to written Germanic -- rather than German -- materials, with a series of chapters looking first at the Runic inscriptions, then at Gothic, the first Germanic language to find its way onto parchment (in Ulfilas's Bible translation). The topic turns finally to what we now understand as literature, with general surveys of the three great areas of early Germanic literature: Old Norse, Old English, and Old High and Low German. A final chapter is devoted to the Old Saxon Heliand. Contributors: T. M. Andersson, Heinrich Beck, Graeme Dunphy, Klaus Düwel, G. Ronald Murphy, Adrian Murdoch, Brian Murdoch, Rudolf Simek, Herwig Wolfram. Brian Murdoch and Malcolm Read both teach in the German Department of the University of Stirling in Scotland.

Book A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature Classic Reprint written by John Scholte Nollen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Chronology and Practical Bibliography of Modern German Literature The Chronology and Bibliography here given were originally intended to supplement a brief outline of the history of German literature written for the texts of the Lake German Series; but as the material grew far beyond the limits of an appendix, it was thought best to rearrange and round out this material so as to form an independent work of more general value. Since the attempt was made to cover, in a small volume, the whole field of modern German literature, from Luther to the present day, anything like an exhaustive treatment was of course out of the question. In general, only such authors are included in the Bibliography as appear in the outline, such as must inevitably be mentioned in any rapid survey of modern German literature. The compiler is well aware that the selection here made is open to criticism at a great many points; but in the diflicult task of choosing some two hundred names from the great roll of modern German authors, he has at least done his best to avoid caprice and to weigh absolute and historical values impartially. The bibliographical and critical references are intend ed to include only what is best, or at least what is good; to save space, full titles are given only where they are necessary to indicate the character of the work in question. As the Bibliography is designed, in part, to serve as a guide in the purchase of books, prices are generally quoted, and the latest editions noted. Book As German as Kafka

Download or read book As German as Kafka written by Lene Rock and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the turn of the 21st century, countless literary endeavors by 'new Germans' have entered the spotlight of academic research. Yet 'minority writing', with its distinctive renegotiation of traditional concepts of cultural identity, is far from a recent phenomenon in German literature. A hundred years previously, the intense involvement of German-Jewish intellectuals in cultural and political discourses on Jewish identity put a clear stamp on German modernism. This book is the first to unfold literary parallels between these two riveting periods in German cultural history. Drawing on the philosophical oeuvre of Jean-Luc Nancy, a comparative reading of texts by, amongst others, Beer-Hofmann, Kermani, Özdamar, Roth, Schnitzler, and Zaimoglu examines a variety of literary approaches to the thorny issue of cultural identity, while developing an overarching perspective on the ‘politics of literature’.
