Book The Effect of Wage Payment Reform on Workers Labor Supply Wages and Welfare

Download or read book The Effect of Wage Payment Reform on Workers Labor Supply Wages and Welfare written by Esther Redmount and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We examine the economic consequences of an 1886 reform in Massachusetts that mandated the weekly payment of wages. We derive conditions on key elasticities of labor supply that determine the qualitative effects of the reform on workers' effective wages and utility. We match census and administrative data on workers at a Lowell textile mill for a period encompassing the switch from monthly to weekly payment. Empirical estimates of a labor-supply equation imply that the reform increased the mill workers' effective wage rates and welfare. The reform also decreased workers' average wage, as predicted by the theory of compensating differentials.

This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of work by leading scholars investigates the impact of the globalization process on some selected Asian economies and societies. With particular focus on the role of institutional factors such as labour unions or workers' associations, case studies are presented on labour-management relations at the workplace that have evolved to cope with globalization. The cases describe labour institutions in the society as a social force that acts as a catalyst for societal democracy and for industrial democracy at the workplace. These cases provide descriptions of the changes in the management's stance and approaches towards labour unions in the selected countries as well as at the organizational level over the last three decades when much of the industrialization process has occurred in Asia.

Book Life at the Margins

Download or read book Life at the Margins written by Juliet Merrifield and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike many books about adult literacy, which focus on abstract concepts related to test scores, this volume develops an understanding of literacy through the engaging life stories of twelve adults from diverse backgrounds living in the United States. In the process of coming to know these adults, we learn, contrary to commonly held assumptions and beliefs about literacy, that adults with limited literacy skills work hard and long, make limited use of public resources, can use technology when shown, and have pride and self-respect. In addition to all of the scientific information and policy implications yielded by this research study, this is foremost a compelling story of human struggle and survival. Readers will find themselves caring about these adults, feeling angry about their underemployment and their pain, and excited about their triumphs.

Book Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia

Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia written by Kyoko Fukukawa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-10-29 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is an important issue in contemporary business, management and politics, especially since the launch of the United Nations Global Compact in 2000 as an initiative to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on them. This book examines the theory and practice of CSR in Asia. The philosophical and ideological underpinnings of CSR are rooted in Anglo-American and European principles of liberal democratic rights, justice and societal structures. This book not only considers the impact of Western CSR practices in Asia, but also provides much needed Asian perspectives on this issue. It investigates the operation of CSR in different countries across Asia, including China, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Bangladesh – comparing the different meanings given to CSR, and the varying degrees of success experienced in different national contexts. This book argues if CSR is ever to revolutionize the manner in which we trade then it is needs to open itself up to the full variety of social responsibility as it occurs around the world. The book re-maps and refines debates about CSR as a global phenomenon, and will be of great value to professionals making strategic decisions in the global business environment.
